[QUOTE="micky4889"][QUOTE="farrell2k"]

[QUOTE="ZeroPunctuation"]why would they want a HD-DVD drive? HD-DVD sales are abyssmal compared to blu-ray each month.farrell2k

Umm. what? The 360 routinely outsdells the PS3 by 2 or 3 to 1 in the largest market in the world, the U.S. Adding an HDDVD drive to the 360 would strenghten the HD-DVD position considerably. It's quite obvious as to why they'd want one in the 360...

lol 2 or 3 to 1 dude its only outselling it by around 100k aweek in America and you do know that the 360 is getting out sold badly in Europe and japan so its just a matter of time also blu-ray is outselling hd-dvd by around 3.1 and with the rumer of warner going blu-ray id sayhd-dvd is all but dead

You paint quite a rosy picture for a console in last place, but the fact remains, despite what you try to spin: The 360 routinely outsells the PS3 by 2 or 3 to 1 in the largest, most important market in the world - The U.S.A. This is why Toshiba would LOVE an HD-DVD drive in the 360. The PS3 is a dead horse in America.

As long as the HD-DVD drive isn't used for playing video games I'm fine with it.

Because it would alienate the 16 million current Xbox 360 owners, isn't that obvious?

Most important to who? Japanese game makes care more about Japan and if i am not wrong many of the lagest game developers are in europe.

All I have to say is I'm glad I own a PS3 now. I can see M$ releasing another console very soon to be able to compete with the PS3.

It's also sold 16 million, hit its peak and is now heading downward.

http://kotaku.com/339293/gates-to-announce-dvr-360-at-ces

Bill Gates might be making an Xbox 360 2.0 announcement at his CES keynote swan song, the Seattle Times' Brier Dudley predicts in a column today.

"In particular, Microsoft could work with Toshiba to develop a digital video recorder with a hard-drive, high-definition HD-DVD drive and Xbox gaming capabilities. They're already allied against Sony and other backers of the Blu-ray DVD format, and Toshiba could help Xbox finally penetrate the Japanese market. Microsoft could also make a splash by announcing plans to give the Xbox 360 an internal HD-DVD drive, putting it on par with Sony's PlayStation 3 that has a built-in Blu-ray drive."

gmastersexay

poor, poor microsoft they always say things aren't important or its not needed ( cough hdmi isn't needed cough ) and then when someone else does it and makes money of it here they come a day late and a dollar short.if they do make a new system hopefully it wont scratch discs or have rrod.

IF this is true and a new SKU is release this gen, then it is an admission that high-def is necessary.gamenux

Only if games come on it. IOf the games are DVD, it will be more evidence that the only thing the extra space is good for is hi-def video content (ie movies or cutsccenes). I can't even imagine the price of this. I doubt it'd be under $499, althoguh thats the only price that makes sense considering the price of a PS3.

M$ needs to give up on hd-dvd. Its already lost the war.jbz7890

As long as major studios are exclusive to one camp, the war will go one. Disney, who was blu-ray only, agreed to put films up on XBL Marketplace. MS is no clown when it comes to making business moves and tactics. Once Sony is done with its Blu-Ray/HD-DVD war, they will immediately be in the middle of a physical vs digital media war. If they're not careful MS may already have the leg on up on them due to the 360 and the fact that MS is already on the vast majority of computers (and home theater/media center PCs) out there.

Its a shame that they can't just do whatever they want. Every studio would be down with MS if they could give cheap licenses of Windows and Office to anyone who agreed to put films in their system.

PCs are meant for using the internet though... unless you're saying that PS3s are for movies as opposed to games (which game sales an Blu-Ray movie sales would suggest).

[QUOTE="marklarmer"][QUOTE="def_mode"]

[QUOTE="Agamespotingboy"]now they build in hd-dvd when its too late, sad just sad munu9

EXACTLY! this is why i think Sony made the right choice in the first place. They support their new technology and the future.

while MS in the other hand. wants money now.

cough, cough, ps3 release price. MS couldnt predict the future, think when the 360 was being developed and how common HDTVs were.

Seriously, if they charged any less for the ps3 they would have gone bankrupt :\

Ughh no? Sony sells other things beside ps3s so they won't go bankrupt. So does MS. Both consoles are riding on revenue from other aspects of the companies business. Nintendo on the other hand, can't afford to mess up.

If they really wanted to get money, they'd work on lowering the cost of the HD-DVD add-on. That thing is a 2 in 1 because it also works as a HD-DVD drive for your computer... which is a major plus for tech heads or people who backed up their DVDs and are now looking to backup their HD collection. Combine H.264 encoding (if you have a CD burning program, it likely comes with some encoding software- Nero does) with 360 media streaming (H.264 is supported) and you're in the game.

HD-DVD sales would sky-rocket if you could get the 360 add-on for like $99-129. The PS3 is whats driving Blu-Ray. HD-DVD wins in terms of standalone player sales, but it Blu-Ray blows it out the water once you include the PS3. MS could easily help the HD-DVD camp (whom they invested in) by working on a price drop for the add-on.

If they do (which i very much doubt) then it won't have any impact on game development, i guarantee it. You think they are just going to drop DVD9 support and switch to high def discs in the middle of a cycle? It would be corporate suicide if they did that, and Microsoft are far too smart to do something like that. Plus they would have to reinburse previous 360 owners with a HD-DVD drive which would cost tons of money to do otherwise they would have their customer severed and would have to start all over again with much much less people to buy their games. Plus Microsoft doesn't care about the format wars, all they really care about is developing as a market leader in digital downloads.

Look at how the Wii and PS3 are faring.... Wii= Owning... PS3= Failing. Microsoft is not one to copy a failing strategy when it is simply not required this generation.

Not happening

EVER.

PS3's Bluray was ahead of it's time. 360 'HDDVD edition' will be behind it's times. M$ really needs to get it's head out of it's a$$. They have no idea what they're doing.

Im sick of the upgrades in the system. I wont be buying anymore MS products as they are going about consoles all wrong with their annual new models. Early adopters are getting screwed. If I wanted to upgrade every year Id play on a PC.rockydog1111

Bad move Microsoft...bad move. I already own a 360 and if Microsoft forces developers to create games on HD-DVD disks, EVERYBODY has to dish out $500+ for a new 360 with a built in HD-DVD....in Microsoft goes through with this, they will fail. Micrososft could be trying to be like Sony (built in HD media disk drive), but it's too late. Would you be willing to dish out a lot of money for 360 2.0?
