Rumor: Microsoft in talks to buy Discord

Microsoft in talks to buy Discord for more than $10 billion.

Microsoft Corp. is in talks to acquire Discord Inc., a video-game chat community, for more than $10 billion, according to people familiar with the matter.

Discord has been talking to potential buyers, and software giant Microsoft is in the running, but no deal is imminent, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the discussions are private. Discord is more likely to go public than sell itself, one person said. Representatives for Microsoft and Discord declined to comment.

Discord reached out to Microsoft to gauge interest, and Microsoft Xbox chief Phil Spencer has been talking to the company, according to one person. VentureBeat reported earlier on Monday that Discord was in talks to sell itself. The company raised $100 million at a $7 billion valuation last year, according to Pitchbook.

If this happens, it'll be almost as big as the Bethesda buyout. Just think about how they could integrate Xbox Network chat and messages with Discord for true crossplay and cross-communication.

Microsoft bought Skype and then people stopped using it. If they bought out Discord, I'd imagine a lot of people would stop using it as well.

The best part about Discord is it's multi platform. It'll run on Linux, Mac, Windows, anywhere. Skype was too, but after M$ bought it, many of the features became Windows-only, and I 100% anticipate M$ to end support and development of Discord on other platforms if they bought them out. I am getting pretty sick and tired of big tech buying up just about every software and application they can. Google buying up Youtube, Sketchup, and many more, and M$ doing the same. Facebook bought out Oculus and now the Rift is garbage requiring Facebook access to do anything.

The only way to combat it is to start boycotting products and services from big tech companies, but you'll never get enough people to do that for it to matter.

You can just say that you haven't heard of anything that isn't Forza at this point.

Not sure how a gamer can never have heard about discord. Or the thousands of other common things you say you've never heard of. I guess if you have zero gamer friends maybe? Ever hear of people who don't give a **** about multiplayer games? Or are they not gamers?

I keep hearing about Discord all over the Internet, but don't know anything about it other than that it's some kind of fancy IRC aimed at "gamers" (and that is only because I only hear about it in that context).

For people not understanding discord.

Discord is massive its basically what every online gaming community uses from a small streamer to big dog developers. It replaces any talk program and it replaces any forum all together. It's a all in one program that works extremely well.

It's basically the best thing in the world right now and completely replaced reddit/teamspeak/skype/forums etc.

fanart ( like to make fanart and showcase it to the devs and other fans ? there you go )
memes and clips ( encountered something funny, here you go )
bugs discussion ( problems? there you go )
Suggestions ( want new stuff in the game can talk about it here )

Viking metal / linux / programming / game mod discussion etc.

This is all live in a massive chat box, then u got talk channels where people can meet up and talk or just use discord themselves to talk with eachother like teamspeak but far more easier.

Developers are all in there from the game, moderators that work for them and hold the stuff in line and u got helpers + loads of people that buy the game and talk about it all on there. And its all set up in like what 10 minutes?

It was your claim that if you are a gamer, you must know about discord, as if SP gamers are not gamers by your own definition, because why would anyone outside of MP even use discord?

Having heard about discord =/= knowing what it is and why should anyone care.

It's most likely a bad thing for the current users, but I'm sure MS would still find a way to make billions from that platfrom, just like they are making profit off of Skype.

The company is looking for buyers. They want to sell. It's going to be either MS or Tencent or FB. MS seems the lesser of those evils.

Why not invest one billion in just games new and old IPs

You laugh, but Gabe Newell used to work for Microsoft, so if he wanted an exit strategy, I think Microsoft would be a willing buyer, and they definitely have the pockets for it.

Well, I don't use Discord but I do see the value in buying them out. Not sure $10b is a good deal for MS or not but I'm sure it's incentivising Discord CEOs and share holders quite a bit. But yeah, I don't see this as a win for gamers.

I am fairly certain it'll happen, regardless and no, it won't be a win for anybody when you see support and development ended for none Microsoft platforms.

What makes you think MS will cease supporting other platforms? It's no longer Ballmer's MS. Nadella is at the helm and he has been consistently embracing open source, Linux and competitors platform. Embrace, extend and extinguish strategy is no longer on the cards.

Nevermind the fact that Discord is about much more than just multiplayer gaming. Can find a server for just about any genre/series/game. More like game specific chats that are typically organized and maintained better than forums. Sometimes official, so discussion + direct news and feedback from devs.

Probably 1% of my Discord time is multiplayer chat lol.

I don't think that would be a win for anyone except the current owners/CEO's of discord (cha-ching). How would discord be profitable for microsoft? How would this benefit current Discord users? How would this benefit Microsoft/Xbox users?

On topic: It's not just MS in talks, Epic and Amazon are also looking to buy Discord. There is also the chance that Discord decides to go public on their own and hopefully Discord goes independently cause its better on its own than letting anyone buying it. Sorry but I don't trust MS.

Microsoft tho.... oh it's dead for sure, but only years after they rebrand it as Teams Nitro and confuse their whole customer base by having two completely separate Teams apps which are both broken in some way.

Or Nokia. I feel like this is way over valued. Whenever they spend a ridiculous amount of money for an acquisition, it seems to not work out well. Discord sounds way overvalued.
