the next XBXO is rumored to have an ARM based cpu with an ion "like" graphics setup with a gpu designated for non-gaming use and another for games and/or multimedia (if supported). it according to source will also have microsoft silverlight and support for some level of basic networking. in the end however your running an official (possibly purchaseable) windows OS (or a variant thereof). resistance is futile!

The upcoming dashboard update gives the Xbox 360 the same UI as Windows 7 phone and Windows 8. Not exactly news when the next Xbox has it was well.

This is one of the advantages that Microsoft has. Creating incredible software and UI. Only 3 companies can do this. Microsoft, Google, or Apple. And apples sucks for gaming.

I've been expecting [hoping] some variant of Windows 8 ever since the rumor about Xbox emulation on the OS. Not to mention the metro UI is quite familiar to the recent Kinect interface for 360.

Windows 8 brings full OS capability to low-profile tablet PC, so I can imagine how effortly it is to run on a high-end console.

That's what I'm saying. If titles are interchangeable, how is the xbox going to last? At some point it will make far more sense to just buy a FAR more capable pc. I had a feeling this would happen--MS will slap the xbox logo on pc cases and call it a day. Here's hoping Sony and Nintendo deliver.

If I can just play Xbox games on PC, why buy an Xbox? At least it means I won't have to worry about Xbox exclusives, not that any Xbox exclusives interested me this gen.

I just think that it will be the first true idiot proof hub to integrate full pc functianality and the family room... it will be full web browser, mouse keyboard, cloud memory based and even though its been possible to hook a pc up to the tv for years, it will be the device that standardizes it for the person who just wants the functions and could care less about the tech behind it. A big time pc gamer might not find value in it but the massive 99.999 percent of the population is gonna eat it up.

I think this is what MS wants--to eventually bring xbox live and kinect to Windows. Imagine if xbox live became the standard for pc gaming? They'd make an incredible killing. A Halo game for pc that was OPTIMISED for pc? EVERYBODY would eat that up. The xbox "console" will likely be marketed towards the kiddies. Something that can play games on a scalable "lower" setting. Judging by the rumors that the price of the new system will be cheaper, it actually makes a lot of sense and can be true.

Makes sense to me. They lose so much money on the hardware no wonder they want to offload the costs onto the consumer.

Consoles have always been types of PC's just locked in time for compatibility/stability issues. Not all developers want to make their game scalable for different types of hardware, it means it needs long term support, there will always be a place for consoles even if it becomes closer to a PC, they will still limit the OS to do what it needs to do and run apps on a more basic level

Halo was optimized, If I remember correctly. Halo 2 wasn't as I hear but I never bought it. Game was pretty average. Not a single one of my friends was impressed. Including me.

I honestly doubt that microsoft will destroy the xbox brand like you all are hypothesizing... they have created a product which was interagral to toppling sonys grip on the industry as well theyve become the deffacto living room online service, they have momentum beyond momentum so the next step would logically be to hit the doomsday button? Really guys? Not happening... not saying the next console will be the second coming of christ and we certainly know from watchi g sony this generation they could very well botch it, but cmon... the xbox brand will be around a while.

But the by the time the ports got on PC everyone that wanted to play it would of just gotten an xbox which was 3 years.

If it is expensive it will not sale. Not being a console will kill its image if not marketed properly. Console gamers want a console not a pc.

It was always inevitable that Windows would eventually wind up on Xboxes. Hopefully it turns out well, wonder if MS will allow for any hardware modifications beyond hard drives and how they'll combat piracy. I bet they'll limit what programs you can run on the OS by only allowing programs purchased from a MS "App" store via XBL.

Genius. Absolutely genius. I never realized that there could be an ulterior motive to their push for ease of development of games. This would be a brilliant move.

Altering hardware would alienate their xbox consumer base. If ppl want to modify components, thats what a pc is for.

Remember that it is the software and services that make the Xbox brand successful; the hardware itself is just a convenient way of accessing them and isn't particularly profitable on its own. Windows 7 features full Xbox Live integration, as will Windows 8 (including a full dashboard as seen in the upcoming 360 dashboard update). Turning the next Xbox into more of a PC would encourage sales of Windows 8 PCs and get players used to the idea of accessing the Xbox experience on a PC.

Altering hardware would alienate their xbox consumer base. If ppl want to modify components, thats what a pc is for.Human-after-all

Optional capabilities are advantages, not downsides. Look at the PS3: it supports swapping in an off-the-shelf PC hard drive for more storage space and faster loading, but you can still fully enjoy the PS3 experience in its out-of-the-box state. The same goes for the PC; every component can be upgraded but the average user will only upgrade the RAM (and many won't do even that).

Having the optional ability to improve your experience is a positive, not a negative, whether we're talking a console or a PC.

ARM? Makes sense. Allowing Xbox 3 to play PC games would kill any chances MS could ever have at the platform being profitable afterall.

Guess now games will come out on xbox 720 and pc and will be considered one and the same, thus any shared game will be a microsoft exclusive.

Not unless you will be able to take the same disc and play it on both 720 and PC, which won't happen.

Not company wars. Either the ten/loop/720 will be assimilated into the umbrella of systems known as "pc," thus doing the same to Lems in SW as hitting the Give Up button in the game Lemmings, and making all their heads explode, OR the Lems will get laughed at all gen by people with sigs of the Metagame results that show 0 AAAAE/0 AAAE/0 AAE/0 AE right up till the end of the gen.

Sooo... having a version of Windows 8 automatically makes it a PC?

Funny... the Dreamcast ran a modified version of Windows CE. Guess the Dreamcast was actually a gaming PC in disguise.

ARM? Makes sense. Allowing Xbox 3 to play PC games would kill any chances MS could ever have at the platform being profitable afterall.

AdrianWerner

Windows 8 supports ARM, but sharing the same hardware and OS doesn't mean playing the same games; look at the first Xbox--it had x86 hardware and used DirectX but its games didn't run on Windows and vice versa. Even with the underlying OS being the same I'd expect some technical measures to prevent playing games on the other platform (unless intended). Some form of deliberate compatibility similar to Steam Play is possible but at BUILD Microsoft only talked about sharing cloud saves across platforms rather than the games themselves.

As for profitability, the 360 is profitable through its software and services more than the console unit itself. This is why Microsoft has repeatedly cut the price of the console and recently had a deal where you get a free 360 with a new Windows 7 PC. Microsoft is bringing the full Xbox Live experience to the PC with Windows 8 (dashboard and everything) without fearing the consequences; if this leads to you buying a Windows 8 PC instead of a next-generation Xbox Microsoft still wins by being able to sell you comparable games and services through the OS, and if you then decide to get an Xbox as well that's even better. Microsoft needs Xbox, but Microsoft does not need the Xbox.

Yes and that's why they will never allow you to play PC games on 720, because it would kill their profitability for console. They might allow 720 games to be played on PC, but not the other way around.
