Only time will tell how this acquisition frenzy pans out. And if it isn’t negative for the studios some of you will still hate MSFT and some will make excuses for them. SW as usual

I hope not. It feels like they have a tendency to ruin the studios they purchase. It seems like it's common for some of the head developers at companies to leave once acquired literally making them a shell of what they were.

Yep, MS record with studios is awful. They have managed well like 1% of their acquisitions. That's why I cringe with everyone of these purchases.

Yeah, because Sony's track record is sooooo much better... lmao. Go look up how many studios they've closed.

Blind fanboys are hilarious.

Evolution Studios- Motorstorm Apocalypse, Driveclub both flopped

Zipper- SOCOM 4, Unit 13, MAG all flopped

Guerilla- small studio, was not adding too much to their brand

What do you expect Sony to do?

Thinking about it I have literally no idea who this could be. I can't think of any historic Sony studio who would be available.

Let's see how they mismanage these new studios like good ol Rare.

And cows cared about Rare, when? Last I checked, they didn't in the PS1/N64 era when they were on of a few devs that remained with Nintendo, while others left them (including Square) in droves to Sony being the rebels of the era they were.

Of course cows don't care for Rare, but they acknowledge it was a great studio untill it went under the helm of MS.

If that happens its because Sony didn't think that developer was worth keeping around. Microsoft can have Sony's leftovers.

@emgesp: Microsoft is playing the smart game. Buying all the studios and IP it can buy. In Streaming and Game as a Service business models, you need original content as a way to starve off competition. If Sony isn't willing to buy or create IPs then they will not have a footing in the long term prospect of being the Netflix of the gaming market.

My guess it will most likely be Quantic Dreams. There were news about them beefing up direct x talent. For my interest they should go after Fromsoftware or any other gun for hire studio from jaapan. Ooh maybe Level 5 even. For gamepass copy what netflix does with content from all over the place.

They can't.....you know, create studios and add to the market?

Xbox made The Initiative in Santa Monica. They have Darrell Gallagher in charge with many top guys from SIE's top studios like God of War's Producer...Let me guess, you love the game he produced, but now that he makes games for Xbox you don't care, just like Sony fanboys adored Ninja Theory and now just last weeks trash. Was just a rumor of IO being bought and Cows already rejecting them faster than they rejected Tomb Raider, Dead Rising and Titanfall.

Do you really think Sony magically cropped up everything they own?

Naughty Dog wasn't some Sony creation, they bought them. Sucker Punch wasn't some SIE addition, it was bought. And Guerrilla Games, again, an acquisition by Sony, just like Media Molecule and Bend.

So don't make it sound like Microsoft is some petty piece of shit, when what you're saying is literally petty hot garbage, and either you're acting like a PoS fanboy on purpose to sell propaganda, or you're ignorant. And even if MS is doing it all out of desperation to stop ignorant ass people to stop hating on them, that doesn't make it any lamer than Sony having to buy studios, which was all likely out of desperation for market share.

It took a long time for those Sony Studios to be where they are today especially Naughty Dog. I am not expecting Home Runs from everyone of them but there is strength in numbers. And also they are trying to cover the bases with different games that appeal to different people. (Sorry if that was too many baseball analogies)

I hope this MS leadership regime stays in tact long enough for them all to fully deliver. As it stands now with the commitment they are putting in the future looks bright and is quite different from what anyone has seen from the gaming division before. For the next 5 years it appears it will be hard to blame MS for the studios short comings if there are any.

Streaming will never replace local rendering for video games.

@emgesp: no is saying That streaming will replace local rendering. I'm saying that the business model of Netflix will impact the gaming industry.

Sony ignoring studios and not aggressively expanding their IP puts them at a disadvantage in an Netflix Era business model.

Lol, first off PS Now is the most profitable gaming streaming service right now. Someone made a thread last month how it was making Sony an insane amount of cash and it was bigger than even Origins which is at second place.

Second, to say Sony aren't willing to create IP's makes you a fanboy when that's all they've been doing this gen.

Sony is in a fantastic position next gen. The biggest streaming service, new IP's created in this PS4 gen, plus they will also invest in new PS5 IP's.

It isn't, Sony has a much better track record with studios than MS. Closing studios is inevitable in the industry but in many instances it looks like MS simply mismanaged them and the rate of success for Sony is much higher.

So why is it okay to point out that MS closes studios when sony does it too? Why did you have to resort to mentioning sony's successful studios when the conversation was about closing them? It's almost as if you are implying that Sony gets a free pass and has the right to close studios while MS doesn't/shouldn't....

Because this is about badly managing studios not the normal evolution of studio that closes because of poor sales or other normal reasons. MS acquired a bunch of studios years ago and what happened to them? Which remain open? What IPs has MS taken advantage of? One was FASA which even ended up saying that MS toxic corporate culture destroyed them from within. No one ever said that from Sony, the studios Sony has bought at least Sony has done a good use of their IPs even if they sometimes don't sell and have been closed and many of them are still open or became other studios within the company. In comparison MS has done nothing like that, where are all the IPs of those studios they bought years ago? Most of them were completely shelved to this day and the studios were closed even before giving them some chance to prove or develop themselves. Like I said, I brought up Sony because Sony has been a much better manager of studios and has used the IPs well. So much so that Spencer is basically now trying to copy Sony's strategy but let's see how that goes. In comparison MS buys have been almost 100% failures. That's why I cringe with MS buying studios while I would trust a company like Sony more to do a better job with them.

Funny how that clown Don Mattrick did nothing but kill off and sell off First and Second party

and now Phil Spencer is doing nothing but form new studios and acquiring others.

@zappat: LinkedIn, Github, Minecraft disagree with you on Microsoft. If Microsoft can manage those massive companies which are much more valuable then I don't see why they can't manage these studios.

1. Those companies are not all gaming. MS has historically treated gaming as a sort of afterthought next to other areas of the company.

2. Minecraft is a monster blockbuster. MS loves that. Sadly historically they seem pretty hostile to anything that doesn't sell like the world will end. That's basically what happened to many of the studios and IPs from MS latest buying spree, when they failed to meet blockbuster status MS pulled the plug pretty fast. Sony has a record of supporting much more varied and niche IPs which translates into usually supporting studios longer. Just look at The Last Guardian, no chance MS would have put so much support behind such an IP.

@zappat: I don't think you can compare the leadership of Microsoft from Steve Ballmer and Don Mattrick to Satya Nadella and Phil Spencer. Both leadership were in different Eras and different vision of Xbox.

But according to the evidence now and not the past, I say that Xbox is poised to do very well and expand the ecosystem to everything it can. Especially with Game Pass, where even if it's low sales, it fills a niche in the market as long it brings in subscribers. Netflix also has this same business model.

Xbox Consoles

Scarlett Cloud streaming box

XCloud for tablets/phones/PCs and Smart TVs.

All can run current XB1 and 360 games while also run future Scarlett games equally. Along with Game Pass. It's a very ambitious plan.

Even if Xbox consoles themselves don't outsell PS5, but Xbox ecosystem overall has more users. It's likely developers and publishers will pick Xbox to expand.
