I really REALLY hope they do buy the IP's back. Im sorry but the state of Rare makes me really sad and I never was a fan to begin with.

you mean how Nintendo killed them then sold off the corpse and soon after the flies the stamper brothers left the corpse with fat wallets in tow....

simply put Nintendo owned them when the majority of meaningful staff left the company there was no one really left that had worked on the major ip's at the company except a few people including the stamper brothers whom hadn't done much except produce *sit on their fat brit asses and buy estates for 14 million lbs* for years then they left soon after microsoft acquistion so I'll rephrase. Nintendo and the stamper brothers killed rare. 1.The majority of meaningful staff left under nintendos reign. 2.The stamper brother sold their 51% interest in the company soon Nintendo sold their 49% interest...why? why did the stamper bothers sell their interest? because they wanted out and they didn't care whom they sold it too if they had stayed on kept he 51% for them selves or even sold it to the staff employee control would have been maintained. all in all the stamper brothers and nintendo killed rare nintendo because they had produced a pricy stupid cartridge based system that meant rare games weren't getting out to the masses to employees left to make their own stupio, and the stamper brothers whom wanted an out they didn't want to make games anymore, one doesn't blame the tiger in the pit they blame the person that threw them into the pit every one knows that Microsoft is a buisness if a studio is taking longer and longer amounts of time to make games and those games aren't successful then microsoft will do what it can to get that studio to produce money. sheep and charlie sheens can blame Microsoft but it was nintendo and the stamper brothers that actually killed rare.

[QUOTE="FireSpirit117"]They'd only be buying an empty shell of a dev.bonesawisready5

Nitnendo would be buying IPs that they can only do better for them.

Banjo Kazooie fell hard, and a rumor comes up where they might be being bought to one of the best Platformer developers in the world? that's crazy awesome. Though I'd doubt Nintendo will acquire Rare themselves, I think Nintendo can acqurie an IP or two from them though.

Does it even work like that? I'd think they'd have to buy Rare as a whole.

Sony sold their Spyro and Crash Bandicoot IPs without selling the studios that made the games, and Microsoft could do the same with Banjo Kazooie or other IPs.

But I don't believe this rumor at all.

I can't think of an example, but I'm pretty sure if a contract can be made, the Company can let go of a certain property of theirs.

Have no idea how it would work, but I'm almost certain that all of these games (Uncharted, God of War, Street Fighter, Mario, etc.) are not solely tied to one developer. Just look at Call of Duty, That's being manhandled by at least 4 developers now.

Didn't Nintendo acquire the Fatal Frame series from Tecmo?

Nah, MS should disband Rare and have other developers make their games. We could have 343 work on Perfect Dark for example.

The current Rare employees can work on what they're best at, making avatars.

Those weren't Sony's IPs, they were just the publisher.

Slashkice

Oh my bad then.

But it's true that whoever currently owns the Banjo Kazooie IP could sell it without also selling Rare, correct? Similar to the Spyro and Crash deal.

Beyond that, Nintendo first introduced a multiplayer system in a 2D platformer that works, and holy crap was it fun.SuperFlakeman
Nope, wrong. Splosion Man came out before New Super Mario Bros Wii. While NSMBW just gave you the single player levels with 4 people awkwardly battering into each other, Splosion Man gave a seperate 50 multiplayer levels in addition to it's 50 single player levels. The multiplayer levels were completely designed around puzzles and jumps that could only be done by 2 or more people co operating. This is a lot better then just sticking more people in the same single player level. NSMBW was a great game, but for it's single player, not it's multi.

Bu but, the next gen Conker, Banjo & Kameo are already deep in dev for the next gen MS console ? :o

Seriously, I don't see MS giving their competitor Rare and it's IP's - it's not like they need the cash to stay afloat or anything. :P

It also sounds like a major dilution of the quality that is at Retro, sounds like it can easily backfire and turn Retro into potentially another Rare.

coders and artists from RARE would be ok to merge with Retro...obviously the main group at Retro right now would still run the show

and I only say merge RARE and Retro together because A.) it would suck for Nintendo to buy RARE just for their IP's and then fire everyone and B.) it would be nice for NIntendo to expand Retro and make it a much bigger team to crank out projects at a faster rate

besides...RARE's quality right now isn't entirely the talents fault, it's MS's for making them make Kinect crap....Kameo and viva pinata were freaking amazing games so there is some quality talent in the current RARE somewhere

huge difference

Nintendo purchased Crystalis from SNK and made a new game in that series on the Gameboy Color. (But it hasn't been seen since then.)

Nintendo and Paon also purchased Glory of Heracles series but that was because the people at Paon created that series when they worked for Data East but Nintendo and Paon purchased it when Data East went under.

And with Retro on board it can be true.

Rare can only be revived by them being on the console that brought them to life. Nintendo. Oh how I hope this happens because Perfect Dark and Banjo were GARBAGE on Xbox. Bring them back to their rightful console!!! Microsoft is already killing Nokia, don't let them kill Rare's IP's as well.

Gue1

They didn't sell Rare to Microsoft. Rare sold themselves because Nintendo refused to purchase them at the time. When Microsoft purchased Rare in 2002 Nintendo was forced to sell their 49% to Microsoft.

Nintendo never owned Rare they only had 49% but Rare owned the other 51%.

Edit* Apparantly Nintendo had first bid on purchasing Rare and they wanted to purchase Rare but other companies were allowed to offer Rare money and Microsoft made a huge offer that Nintendo couldn't match.

No, with the issues with Activision and other companies, Goldeneye '97 still won't be on any DL service.

Why would that be?

Their N64 IP's are still perfectly viable/salvageable. Platformers especially on Nintendo systems are always viable, Shooters are still viable in the general market (Even with the glut) and so are Fighting games.

But Rare is dead, right?

That is correct. Seems like Nintendo is only seeking to buy Rare up for their IPs.

ShadowDeathX

Exactly what i was going to say, i mean give Rare permission to do all the shovelware they are so good doing nowadays, meanwhile take their IPs and give them to Retro...or better yet, buy their IPs and them send them back to MS :D

Seems pretty out there, The only thing I could see nintendo wanting from this deal is Banjo-Kazooie. Would microsoft really sell one of their console competitors an I.P. like that?

You guys have no idea how badly I want this to be true. If Nintendo can get them back they might actually be able to salvage this once amazing company, and maybe we can finally start getting games there franchises deserve again.

Why not? Microsoft appears to have no interest in using any of Rare's IP's, not even the ones developed while they where at Microsoft, they have turned them into one of there main Kinect focused groups, and that appears like it's not going to change. If MS aren't interested in using those franchises anymore, they might as well make some profit from them by selling them to Nintendo.
