http://kotaku.com/5817874/report-the-playstation-4-will-have-kinect+style-motion-controls

Next year, Nintendo is releasing a new home console, the Wii U. Taiwanese component makers tell tech site DigiTimes that Sony is readying a new home console for 2012. But that's not the interesting part.

These component manufacturer sources tell DigiTimes that the PlayStation 4 will feature body-movement controls like Microsoft's Kinect. That's the interesting, if not unexpected, part.

The PS3 currently has PlayStation Move motion controls, which are similar to the Wii's motion controls.

The report states Foxconn and Pegatron Technology will assemble the PS4 for Sony. Foxconn and Pegatron Technology both assemble the PS3, which was originally manufactured in Japan.

Sources told DigiTimes that the PS4 will go into production at the end of 2011 for a 2012 launch. Apparently Sony will manufacture 20 million PS4 consoles for 2012.

Previously, Kotakureported that 2014 seems likely for a new Sony or Microsoft console—2013 if either Sony or Microsoft feels pushed. 2013 seems like a far more realistic date for a new PlayStation 4 than 2012, which is next year.

What's more, America's slow economic recovery could make launching after 2012 ultimately more profitable. Also, Sony is releasing its new portable, the PS Vita this year, and the Tokyo-based electronics giant might need a breather between hardware launches.

If DigiTimes' sources are correct, Sony could look to get the jump on Microsoft and thwart Nintendo in one fell swoop.

Since the PS3 launched, Sony has touted the machine's 10 year lifespan. The PS3 launched in 2006, six years into the PS2's lifespan. Even after the PS3 launched, Sony continued to support the PlayStation 2.

If the PlayStation 4 launches in 2012, that would be six years into the PS3's lifespan. Sony could continue to support the PS3 as it did with the PlayStation 2.

Kotaku reached out to Sony and will update this post should the company comment.

Mine gave me an MGS "?" because I don't believe for a second that Sony would adopt Kinect style technology or release in 2012. Seems like complete BS.

prepare to eat crow. Industry chatter is pointing more and more towards a 2012 ps4 launch. the next xbox is almost 100% a lock for fall-winter 2012 launch. No amount of sticking your head in the sand will change that.

Inb4 lemmings accuse Sony of "Copying" Microsoft, even though Microsoft is the one who copied it from Sony in the first place

Honestly though, just give me a f***ing Dualshock 4 and better graphics and I will be fine. Why is that such a complicated concept for these companies to grasp?

Just because you run every news story that every man / Womand / Child / Homeless person tells you about, and your right 1/9000 times doesn't make you credible.

From gaf:

The latest Digitimes.com rumor has hit the Mac web again. The claim this time is that Apple is delaying Mac OS X Leopard until October 2007," MacRumors' Arnold Kim blogs for Normalkid.

Kim looks at five years of Digitimes rumors reported on MacRumors over the past 5 years along with their outcomes and finds: "14 rumors total. 1 True. 10 Wrong. 2 Possible. 1 Unknown."

Kim concludes, "I'll leave it to the reader to decide how likely it is that this latest rumor will come true."

YES Kinect-ish.

That means Nintendo will be unique, let the other guys duke it out again, like how they both tried to grab the dudebro crowd this gen.

I was thinking that Sony would steal the Upad idea, but now Wii U multiplats will have unique gameplay elements which means superior versions.

That's just some context. One look at the rumors claims is enough to know it's fake. No system is going to launch with a 20 million shipment.

Lol if you believe that. WiiU will most likely get the worst version of most multiplats(that's assuming it does get most of the multiplats).

Unique and superior aren't synonyms.

shinrabanshou

I'm obviously talking about PS3/360/Wii U multiplats.

Wii U can play them traditionally, with either Upad or CC Pro, OR you use the Upad exclusive option that could potentially mean "superior" i.e. more fun way to play.

So yes, it's either on par or superior depending on implementation, generally speaking.

And because most games will be for this tier of systems for at least 3 years, not PS4/X720, and if PS4/X720 doesn't have a Upad ripoff, then it's safe to assume this.

Again, I'm talking about PS3/360/Wii U multiplats.

If you think that 3rd party devs will make PS4/X720 powerhouse games within the next 3 years you're wrong.

That's why Last Guardian, GoW4 where not shown, Sony needs a strong 1st party lineup for PS4 because they know that they will lack 3rd parties from the start.

The PS4 and NeXtBOX have rich functional online infrastructures, something the Wii U has yet to exhibit. And analog sticks.

And focus for multiplatform developers will remain on the systems with established installed base that are known quantities in terms of moving software.

Even discounting that, no, simply having some sort of touch pad or second window feature doesn't make it "superior." The function could range from great, to good, to redundant, to horrible and/or stupid. So no, it's not safe to assume anything of the sort.

Sony doesn't need to "steal" the u-pad idea, given they already did it with the PSP this gen.

Sure but this and even the Vita thing are optional peripherals which means no support + it's difficult to market this.

Because you need PS3(or 4?)+Vita for it to work, and we can assume, based on how they handled Move, that it won't be supported.

It needs to be their main controller. I'm not against them ripping it off actually, because I want gaming to evolve everywhere, dualshock had its moment it's time to move on.

Oh yes I forgot people care for online, well at least for me it will be great since I have no reason atm to buy a PS4 as things look. I had to get a PS3 for MGS and Blu-ray.

Yeah, and if that function turns out to be horrible or stupid, you still have the option to play it traditionally with either CC Pro or Upad. So it's a win-win situation.

I'm not talking about marketing. It's a basically pointless feature that's only real good for video streaming, which doesn't even work for DVDs (most likely due to licensing features).

You can't "rip something off" if you had it first.

The wii also had exclusive control option, and i would not change Gears for any Mario,or Uncharted either, the fact is Nintendo already had a different control, and that did not stop other consoles from having better games, worst it has been confirmed to only support 1 Upad controller which limit multiplaying, because if you want to you have to play with a wii controller.

I think its inevitable that all 3 consoles will have some type of motion controller going foward for now on. Its become the normal now. I don't think we will see anything on the market from MS or Sony for another 2 or 3 years. I expect the new Xbox to have a Kinect built into the system next time around and the next PS Eye to have Kinect Style Motion tracking but I don't think Sony will go away from having an actually controller in the players hand during motion controls.

...and it released for the gamecube. the big difference is, the wii and GC had very, very similar specs. i doubt that will be true for the ps3 and the ps4. the last guardian will be a ps3 game.

Thank god they're not reliable. If Sony do go casual next gen then I'll get a gaming PC. I hate to admit it but I think games for "gamers" will become less common next gen.

You know what... I remember seeing Sony costs of 3bill+ i'm beginning to think they threw a giant cheque at R&D and said "Get it ready within two years, i want prototypes!" and thats not how i want my PS4... a rushed MS styled product where they just buy their products rather than create something they took their time with and made it high quality and with passion. I hope Sony haven't gone too far(in the opposite direction this time).

The worst thing about this news is how people try to say that Sony is fallowing MS,is like the Eye Toy did not existed last gen or the PS3 eye this one.
