Did you even play DKCR? It's an entirely different game from DKC on SNES.

That sounds stupid if for no other reason than jerry rigging three ancient PPC G3 processors into a modern one sounds quite a bit more complex and expensive than just using a modern PPC chip. So I'm definitely calling BS on this one.famicommander

IBM PPE is like G1 PowerPC i.e. on par with ARM Cortex A8 or Intel Atom i.e. dual instruction issue per cycle with in-order processing.

IBM PPE vs IBM PowerPC G3 is like comparing Intel Atom vs Intel Pentium M/Core 1.

PowerPC G3 with 128bit VMX would be like PowerPC G4+(e.g. 7448). PowerPC G4+ with updated FSB would like Freescale's e600 update i.e. Freescale's PowerPC G5 (with minus 64bit GPR compute) level CPU.

2Ghz PowerPC G3 with VMX + FSB updates would rival IBM PPE (3.2Ghz PowerPC G1 with VMX + FSB updates) .

At the same clock speed, branch performance on PowerPC G3 would be superior compared to PPE. PowerPC G3 has the short pipeline advantage compare to Pentium 4 level PPE(21 stage).

Hopefully, IBM create it's own Intel Core like solution instead of another Intel Atom/Pentium IV like solution.

What he's saying is that the old G3s from yesteryear would only need VMX and higher FSB (and don't forget extra L2 cache) to be competitive with individual cores in the 360's Xenon, at least on a clock-per-clock basis.

[QUOTE="nintendoboy16"][QUOTE="gamesaredead420"]n64 is nintendo's last hardcore gamer focused console. Because nintendo/Snes early on nintendo didnt allow violent stuff like blood in mortal kombat.gamesaredead420
Here we go again...

you werent even alive when mortal kombat was ported from the arcade to genesis and snes. the genesis had all the blood and fatalitys like the arcade and snes they removed it.. nintendo tried to say im sorry by buying rare and making killer instinct with blood and fatalitys LOL

Its werid how MK2 MK3 an MK3U all had blood eh? They make 1 call, that didnt even matter seeing how MK1 looks like **** on megadrive, and people hose them for it. MK1 SNES is hands down better then MK megadrive.

After the 128bit SIMD and FSB updates, this is like comparing Intel Atom X3 (PPE/PowerPC G1) vs AMD Athlon II X3 (PowerPC G3).

Atleast the console doesn't have Intel Atom like CPU cores (Xbox 360's PPE).

IBM confirmed Wii-U is using the Watson/Power7 CPU.

That was last year. They also updated their Twitter 3 hours ago and reconfirmed it.

Just hope "enhanced broadway" doesn't result in Intel Core i3/i5/i7 type update i.e. enhanced Intel Pentium Pro(P6)/II/III/M/Core 1/Core 2.

Current Power7's wattage, die size and process tech says Hi.

Power7 follows PowerPC G3 out-of-order processing PowerPC family tree.

Power6 and PPE are not part of out-of-order processing PowerPC family tree.

It depends on how many updates has been applied for PowerPC G3 e.g. Intel Atom (PPE like) @ 3.2Ghz would beat Intel Core Solo @ 1.2 Ghz.

IBM PowerPC G3 is still a good CPU core that needs 128bit VMX, external bus and clock speed updates.

Wii U needs a low power updated PowerPC chip and current Power7 doesn't fit this TDP profile. Wii U needs a DTR laptop type CPU solution.

PowerPC G3 with 2Ghz (with 128bit VMX + FSB update) would beat IBM PPE @ 3.2Ghz (L2 cache @ 1.6Ghz for XBox 360)

Perhaps Nintendo should include AMD type PR (performance rating) marketing LOL e.g. PowerPC G6 Mobile 3200+ PR @1.6Ghz vs PPE @ 3.2Ghz.

At the same clock speed, PowerPC G4 would beat PowerPC G5 on non-FSB workloads e.g. PowerPC G4 @2Ghz (overclock) would beat PowerPC G5 @ 2Ghz.

PowerPC G5 @ 1.6Ghz would rival PPE @ 3.2Ghz e.g. LinuxPPC app benchmarks.

A single core on the xbox 360 was only 20% faster than a single core from broadway. Broadway can't go above 1ghz so they have to improve it in that regards. Also the current Broadway architecture is not compatible for multicore designs. With that in mind the CPU should be a much better imrovement even at a low clock speed. It will refined enough to stand on its own. Also from what i've heard 2 cores will be a 476p, and the main core is a Power7 derivative, but again... rumors are rumors. Regardless the WiiU still won't be the strongest, but rest assured the CPU is at least 50% stronger.

Thermals would be too hot for Wii U's form factor.

IBM Power7 (8 cores) has a die size 567 mm^2 (1). No consoles was shipped with this die size!

----

Cutdown Power 7 with 3 cores would be around 212 mm^2 or less without L3 cache.

IBM CELL DD2 (1 PPE, 8 SPE) has die size of 235 mm^2 (first generation, PS3 has 1 disabled SPE)

AMD FX-8xxx (8 cores) has die size of 315 mm^2

AMD Phenom II X6 (6 cores) has die size of 346 mm^2.

AMD Radeon HD 7970 has a die size is 365 mm^2.

Intel Core i7 IvyBridge (4 cores, 16 IEUs) has a die size is 160 mm^2.

Ouch.

Cell = roughly comparable to Pentium 4 (PPE) & GeForce 7800 GTX (5x SPE) in raw power.

But it's not as good for processing and graphics as the above mentioned combo.

Infact Cell doing graphics on it's own looks nothing special:

bit dissappointed Wii U is only gonna be triple core- I mean why not go quad-core?

PC has had quad core CPUs for years and it's reasonably to assume that X720/ PS4 will be at least quad core.

CwlHeddwyn

Power7 core can do 6 instruction issues** per cycle from it's dispatch unit while PPE can only do two instruction issues per cycle.

Power7's six instruction issues per cycle can slot into any of following units

  • 2 fixed-point units
  • 2 load/store units
  • 4 double-precision floating-point units
  • 1 vector unit supporting VSX (SIMD)
  • 1 decimal floating-point unit
  • 1 branch unit
  • 1 condition register unit

PowerPC G5 can do 5 instruction issues per cycle.

With Linux app benchmarks, PowerPC G5 @1.6Ghz is roughly equivalent to PPE @ 3.2Ghz.

PS; X86 instruction decodes into two RISC instructions i.e. one AGU and one ALU.

If it runs Batman Arkham City Well and Assassin's Creed 3 well I don't see the big deal, it just means the games will look better on the LCD screens now.

I just don't like the trend I'm seeing here.

I can't believe people actually want to see some old dude's nose hairs when playing a game.

Theyve made so many Wii's... They can now bundle them up together. After Next-Gen, there will be 6 Wii's bundled together

If it runs Batman Arkham City Well and Assassin's Creed 3 well I don't see the big deal, it just means the games will look better on the LCD screens now.

I just don't like the trend I'm seeing here.

I can't believe people actually want to see some old dude's nose hairs when playing a game.

Improved graphics can only be a good thing.
