Don't like this one bit and this may well be the tip of the iceberg. The main question is why this is necessary? Unless they're trying to wipe out piracy then the only other explanation i can think of is cutting out used games.

As long as casuals won't get annoyed they will go with it, combining rumors that they plan to attach xbox 720 to cable TV services they could fool people that xbxo is dependent on cable TV service.... they already fooled even hardcore gamers that they need to pay for any access to Internet to console, even thru some of them are free for any device connected to internet.ShadowriverUB
Actually, if the Xbox could replace my DVR and the contract price is less than the ~$10 per month the cable company is charging me for that dvr service, the new Xbox could actually be a somewhat compelling purchase. I just don't see my cable company going for that.

Apparently pre-release 360 dev boxes had a similar requirement, so this might just be about preventing leaks and pushing firmware updates. MS already has a pretty reasonable DRM scheme with XBL and the 360, so I really don't see why they'd risk alienating so many users for such a limited further reduction of piracy, hacking, etc.

Well it has one down side, it might redue worldwide sales due lower accessibility, they already had problem with bring Live to lot of countries, most noticeably central Europe, thats why PS3 dominates here (thru it also because SCEP localizing affords), so bringing it to all cables around the world will be quite challange.... or else they will have cable-less offer to. btw i corected OP with info about 3 minutes so it wont e miss leading... yea sorry i did read comply artcule i posted :P

[QUOTE="ShadowriverUB"]Anti Used game can't be based around DRM or else medium they using have serial number, which with current standard manufacturing methods is impossible with optical discs (they could burn something small maybe?). Device won't able to distinguish copies without some sort of uniqueness, which with current method is serial number that you need to type manually. At that point it does not matter if you online or not as digital copy protection is pretty solid on sonsole, or else hackers will able able to crack whole console up This is just my speculation, but MS (and Sony as well) could simplify this process via QR Codes as both consoles suppose to have camera out of the box

It is quite possible to tackled use games through DRM. For instance, rumors have also pointed to game installs and not requiring discs to play. To me this points to treating games like PC games that require online activation with one time use activation codes. Sure maybe someone can take the disc, install it on another console, but they may hit a wall when it asks for an activation code and the one the game came with has already been used. It's really no different than the anti-used game DLC codes that games come with these days (the ones for redeeming he muliplayer and such), as they have a 1 time activation, the exception here is the DLC is on disc and it's for the entire game.

"pretty reasonable DRM scheme with XBL and the 360" There DRM was one big hole was cracked up pretty easily and it was not much invasive, but it was detectable and MS was bringing cracked consoles remotely to unusable state (which i think you should remeber as it was always big news).

People getting all freaked out about rumors.

From today's IGN article:

"Other sources indicated that this requirement may change over time, while others are said to have no knowledge about a constant internet connection for the console."

Exactly manual code as i said :> It really does not need to involve DRM as those solutions just download file that unlocks content, assuming console data is isolated from user it does not need DRM at that point. But pretical model you talking is Steam model and yes it involves DRM as it checks ownership before run.

it would be hilarious if the games would require you to pay for xbox live gold to start them , half of the games (mutliplayer) does that already so why wouldnt greedy ms go one step futher with their rip off tactic? :D

So lems will have to pay $60 a year to start their no games? I bet the little rodents are gonna love this and justify it by claiming that starting a game was never better.

No, doesn't look like it accepts drops. "If the connection is interrupted then after a period of time--currently three minutes, if I remember correctly--the game/app is suspended and the network troubleshooter started."

Yeah, i don't think so. This isn't the PC. It would be stupid to launch a game console to gamers when many of them don't even have access to online support. So I doubt it will be an always online system.

This would literally be shooting themselves in the foot. Wether it is true or not we will have to wait and see but I wouldn't put it past them.  I think Microsoft is acting a lot like sony did last generation when launching the ps3. They thought they could rest on their fanbase and they would sell as good as the ps2. It didn't work for sony and I don't see it working here for Microsoft.  Sad if true but I wasn't planning on buying one anyway.

[QUOTE="RR360DD"]So just like PC games then. My 360 is always connected anyway, but I wonder what their reasoning is behind it having to be connected always.iPage

What? Very few PC games require a connection.

I guess he's talking about Steam or something, even though there's an offline mode though.

I think he's referring to Ubisoft during Assassins Creed II and it's sequals where they orignally had an always online drm. I believe they have since removed those with patches though.

Last gen Microsoft blocked the multiplayer portion of your games by making you pay XBL to play online.

This gen, Microsoft is going one step further: Introducing Xbox LIVE Plus!

For only $80 a month, you're allowed to access not only the multiplayer portion of the games you buy, but also the singleplayer portion! :o

Of course, if you don't pay for Xbox LIVE Plus, you can always enjoy staring at the disc and box art.

Microsoft, it only does customer service.

Some companies run on a value system. If you can't expand your base fast enough to generate substantial profits, you have to expand your customers value and XBL is a great way to do it.

Always online DRM is something that should never be...especially on a Console. On PC, it's due to rampant piracy.

Puckhog04
Funny, I recall seeing torrent files for games on PS3 and 360 before they are released while on PC I haven't. Guess where the rampant piracy is.

If it turns out to be true then I will not be interested. This will kill the Xbox brand if true. And yes, I like the Xbox brand as well as the Sony brand so I'm not a fanboy. This is a console. If gamers wanted always online, then they will game on the PC where there's most likely an Internet connection all the time. Microsofts been acting stupid lately. Need to fire ballmer. He's been terrible and taking them in the wrong direction.
