this is kind of an inferred rumor, but if you've been reading the ads in the past month or so, xbox live gold 12 month cards have been dropping in price from $50 to $30 in stores such as-toys r us, best buy, amazon.com.

I don't see a reason why they would be doing this other than to see how many new members they can get, so it might eventually happen universally.

proportionally, this would be- 12 month- $30, 3 month- $12, 1 month- $4

it's still not free, but much better than nothing.

i saw those 30 dollar cards and i thought the same thing. i could see them doing that. they paid with the 50 a year charges to get all the servers up and what not. now that the user base isn't growing so rapidly they can probably cut the price.

I'd love for them to drop the costs completely, but 30 dollars is better than 50.

Sadly though, these are just sales. If you're smart you'd buy a few of those cards while they're so cheap!

Incredibily rare?:?

Its happened before. I got a one year card from Best Buy about a year ago for $30. Also got a one year card from Circuit City back in 2006 for $20 because of a ad error.

Also I doubt they're dropping prices. Retailers have dropped the price for XBL prepaid cards before. However MS have never dropped the price for XBL, ever.

I could see it happening. MS already has the cheapest console on the market, and from a PR perspective a cut to XBL gold subscription costs would be a good way of jumping on the "we know you're getting ****ed by the economy" bandwagon without cutting the 360's price..

Even if it cost $1 I would still not pay for it. I can easily afford the $50 a year but am not willing to pay for something that should be free out of principal. PC gamers were able to get Windows Live for free... why haven't Xbox gamers done the same? All you have to do is refuse to pay for a few months and then Microsoft will realize that charging for the service isn't wanted by the community and they will make it free.

Well if Live fees go down future features will be less and less right? We keep getting told that Live fees are in direct relation to what features Live gets. That paying for the service gets everyone the great features. Live downgrade confirmed.

New ones do, don't they? If the current features came due to Live fees how wil future features come? As I said, we are told the money spent on Live goers to making LIve better. Common sense tells you, if that is true, that less money means less ability to add features. I'm just playing devil's advocate. I don't believe 360 owners should be charged for Live at all. Especially when most of the said features are for all and not just ones who pay.

You know of course that the PSN isn't really free, they've created Home so that they can subsidise the costs of running PSN. Advertising and Micropayment revenue will hopefully be a cashcow for them.

To make XBox live free you'd have to refund all those people who still had time left on their accounts.

A better idea for MS would be to make the live fee $30 but include 1000 XBox live points as part of the subscription.

In fact better than that is a monthly rolling subscription that gets you live Gold + points for a slightly reduced cost. That would then mean you had points to spend every month which would be a great sales pitch to devs to produce DLC and XBLA games.

i dont not pay for live because it is to expensive (its pocket change infact), the reason i don't play for live is out of principle i find it a joke MS charge for a heavily advertised service that has been free on PC's since the dawn of online gaming and is also for free on the PS3.

You can play multiplayers online for free on PSN. You don't have to go to home nor do you have to buy anything off the psn store.

Personally I don't mind pay $50. But I want something in return. I want dedicated servers for all big titles, atleast for Halo 3 and Gears of War. I want to be able to search for custom games in Halo 3. I want Halo 3 to no be a lag fest. I want Matchmaking to cease to exist. I want a system that truely reduce lag.

The reason you pay for live is because MS has laid out most of the online development infrastructure. It's kind of easy to sit back and complain about what you aren't getting for your money, but when developers make games for the 360, the online component is already done.

Guess who makes that code? It ain't the keebler elves. If Sony laid out the cost of developing PSN's online multiplayer component, they would probably charge a fee also.

And PSN does? Not to mention all thsoe servers costs get deducted from their taxes and everything as work material.
