http://thesilentchief.com/2012/07/18/gamesmaster-uk-rumor-final-fantasy-xv-four-years-in-development-will-release-on-current-gen-platforms/

NOTE : take the following info for a huge mountain of salt.

-------------------

"You may recall a GamesMaster UK rumorwe passed along last Decmeberconcerning Final Fantasy XV being announced at E3 of this year.

Well, E3 2012 has come and gone with no unveiling from Square Enix, however, the UK publication stands by its source and shares more speculation on the rpg that Square Enix President Yoichi Wada reportedly wants to "surpasses The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" and Final Fantasy VII.

  • Including the concept planning and pre-production phase, the game has already been in development for over 4 years.
  • It entered full production in January 2010, a month after FFXIII was released in Japan. Since then it has had a development team of just over 200 people.
  • The director is the same person who directed FFVI, FFIX and FFXII, Hiroyuki Ito.
  • The co-director led a small part of the development team to make Tactics Ogre for the PSP in parallel with FFXV. He's currently multi-tasking as lead UI designer of FFXIV 2.0 and co-director of FFXV.
  • The game design and battle system will be a major evolution of FFXII.
  • The game will be open world and have sprawling, crowd-filled cities on par with Assassin's Creed.
  • The battle system now allows you to target different parts of an enemy's body like in Vagrant Story.
  • Yoichi Wada (president of Square Enix) wants the game to have a world scale and volume of content that surpasses The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. He also wants the game to surpass FFVII in worldwide sales and critical reception.
  • Will release on all major current gen platforms.

As far as the initial rumor claiming Final Fantasy XV would be announced at E3 2012 the publication stood by its "extremely trustworthy, industry source" who also informed them that Final Fantasy XIII being announced for Xbox 360 at E3 2008 ahead of the public reveal.

He said that he was 90% sure the game would be announced as part of Final Fantasy 25th anniversary. It was us that predicted that the place of the announcement would be E3.

He only told us a vague, "Next year, as part of FF 25th anniversary." What that means is that it could still show up at Tokyo Game Show in September. You may think this is all BS but the track record of this source with Square Enix news is hard for us to ignore. We wouldn't have run the story if we didn't believe it was true."

----------------------
Sounds interesting to say the least.

It also sounds like people need to let go FF VERSUS XIII and move on if true.

Discuss.

Unlikely. JRPGs have never been about player choice. That's why they tend to have more focused plots than open-world games like Elder Scrolls.

I don't think player choice is what they are aiming for when they said to be bigger than Skyrim, it's about the world and content.

Well it sounds awfully similar to versus in terms of open world and development cycle yet the rumor is supposed to be about FFXV, I hope we find out in TGS.

Won't be hard to be better than Skyrim, but JRPGs are usually boring though so it'll be a challenge.

The only thing worse in thriteen two was the plot holes in the story, thirteen failed in gameplay music, lack of atlus boss fight, strategy, depth, exploration, content, etc. I do think they should be make more games without slapping FF on them, but they through some good ones out though, Infinite Undiscovery.

Square also needs to stop with this trying to beat FF, make an original FF game not refferencing or taking elements from other games which can irritate fans and alienate new comers, pretend FF7 does not exist when making a game. Then, the game will be good.

They did that with FFXII and FFXIII and they got mixed reactions ( specially with FFXIII ), people now want them to return to the basics of what the old FF games were.

No, 13-2 was the most disgraceful attempt at a FF game I have ever played. It was extremely lazy in just about everything it did. No party to chose from, crazy sh1t happening and being explained with 'a paradox' in a way that exceeds even MGS nanomachines in epicness. Making the player repeat 'levels' with slightly different content as they are different times, when a FF game should not even have 'levels' to chose from. Throwing in old cast members that add nothing to the game. Putting the main character in hooker clothing with no explanation what so ever as to why. And DEAR FKN GOD that ending.. 13-2 was a fkn disgrace. The only good thing about the game was Caius Ballard. At least they got the villain right this time. Everything else was buchered beyond anything resembling a Final Fantasy game of quality.

First off get the real ending Second of all learn Atlus boss fight, worth game alone. Ending after is BS though.. on to other stuff, what do you mean FF game should not have levels to choose from? What does that? Explain yourself. They have a new cast memebr playing with you the whole time as well as indepth gameplay elements, more strategic battle strategies, and improve monsters. The main character in hooker clothing? That looks nothing like hooker clothing, but I will say that it came out of nowhere literally. The problem is your opinion is a Paradox. Many good things about thirteen 2: -In depth battle system, you can't just win by doing nothing like before. -Better bosses -More balanced out monsters. -Crystarium is balanced and offers many ways to choose how you want your character to excel in what. -Better Soundtrack -Tonberry -Weather changing machine which enemies and yoruself use different strategies of fighting. -Better graphics -More attention to environment details. Acadamia is a good start. -Tons of hidden content and side quests -Convienent system of appearing where you last left a time period when you come back instead of starting at a gate. -More avoidable battles. -etc.

This gen was a failure. There are plenty of gens still to come. Even SE officials said that XIII was a failure. Chances are, the FF name isn't about to die and if you want me to predict how it's gonna turn out, well I say it would be difficult for them to do worse, so we might be surprised if they do step it up.

True, that they cannot do much worse than 13-2, so perhaps there is some hope for them yet. That is the last FF game I will by with any hope they make games as good as they used to though, it was aweful.

Yeah, I am confident they did learn from some of their mistakes since that's what their CEO pretends, however I'm not sure we'll be able to see a true masterpiece from them before at least a few years.

Skyrim runs on PC (Steam) and supports Mods i.e. user generated content. Skyrim PC is like open world WRPG + Minecraft (Mods).

On the digital front, Valve revealed that the Skyrim is the fastest-selling title ever to grace Steam.

According to Bethesda, the PC version of the game has outsold all rivals in the US by three to one during November.

PC has a large WOW (World of Warcraft) type audience.

Square has made plenty of mistakes, but at least they learn from them. And they never make the same game twice. They're one of the few (or only) gaming companies I've seen come out and basically say "oops, we made a huge mistake" and try and fix it with the revamp of FF14. BioWare/EA wasted 100s of millions of dollars on a crappy MMO and it's just going to die out. At least SE cares enough to fix their mess. Same deal with 13-2. The game isn't a masterpiece, but they took the universe they created and used fan feedback to improve the sequel... 13-2 is a huge improvement over 13. But I couldn't care less how people feel because it's cool to hate on Square Enix and most Americans would rather play generic medieval WRPGs with huge worlds, no direction and nothing to do than admit that they enjoyed a JRPG.

But I couldn't care less how people feel because it's cool to hate on Square Enix and most Americans would rather play generic medieval WRPGs with huge worlds, no direction and nothing to do than admit that they enjoyed a JRPG.Fossil-

"No direction and nothing to do" would be false i.e. it's up to the player to seek missions for hack and slash NOT guided by training wheels/guard rails.

Unlikely. JRPGs have never been about player choice. That's why they tend to have more focused plots than open-world games like Elder Scrolls.PannicAtack

I think you were mislead by the TC who apparently didn't understand what the article said. They want it to be better than FFVII, which is a completely empty statement. I say that because saying "we don't want it to be better than FFVII, we want it to be worse" wouldn't make any sense. So basically he's saying "we're hoping for the best".
