Ok all those bullet points sound fantastic. The bit about evolving FFXIIs battle system really has me interested.
But the goals of being "bigger and better than Skyrim and FFVII" tell me that they might not have their collective heads in the right place. The fact that they continue to put FFVII on such a pedestal without understanding why it was such a smash hit to begin with worries me.

An why do you think it was on such a high pedestal? If you think the only reason FF7 was such a popular game was because of only it's transition into 3D or whatever then you're sadly mistaken. People loved it as a JRPG, for it's story and it's characters, for it's materia system.Hey I loved the game. For a good while I considered it one of my favorite games of all time. I even still enjoy it today.
That said, you cant deny the fact that its immense popularity was a result of (at the time) never before seen high production values. It was the JRPG that finally busted the genre into the mainstream. Gamers who previously couldn't care less about the genre came into the fold for the graphics, effects and pre-rendered cutscenes. It was a "my first rpg" for so many people. As a result it was also the first story heavy game for many of those people. So naturally it holds a special place in their hearts.
The game did nothing to surpass previous rpgs and was outclassed by many rpgs afterwards. This situation isnt much different than OoT. Both games were awesome at the time and are still enjoyable today, but they receive a disproportionate amount praise simply because of their place in time.
I'm not saying FFVII wasnt good, or even great, but if you cant clearly see what fuels its immense popularity then the ignorance is on you.
