Ryse: Son of Rome getting Rave reviews from Amazon Customers

Some go even so far as saying this being the best game they've ever played and calling it a masterpiece, not only because of the unreal movielike graphics. People can't believe how this game scored so badly from pro reviewers. I guess Kotaku giving the game a YES doesn't sound so wrong anymore;)

I don't know what went wrong with the reviews of this game. Was it Sony's great PR? Reviewers that don't like fighting games? Were these guys simply rushing through the game so as to get over with it? Are they afraid of being called dumb if they would give a great score to this game, because every other review has a low score?

Gamespot giving the game a 4, this is just wrong. Even if you don't like the gameplay mechanics and perceived repetitiveness of it. Games like Call of Duty and even better scored games can be perceived as repetitive. Isn't Call of Duty shooting one dude after another? In Ryse you simply slash and stab one dude after another, but boy with what style.

The game has extreme production values, with great sound and voice acting, and the graphics and animations are second to none. The fighting mechanics are also closer to reality than let's say God of War. Why are some reviewers even comparing the game to GoW, apart from the Roman setting that is similar to GoW's setting of old Greece they share almost nothing in common. Are reviewers scoring it that low because they think if a game has swords it has to play like GoW? Has a game like GoW that sugar coats it's gameplay with endless combos that are so distanced from reality really better gameplay than Ryse which relies on precise timing with a limited set of reality grounded attacks?

I call bias on Gamespot's review of Ryse. They give scores of 5 or 6 to games that are a bug-ridden mess with horrible gameplay, and yet when a game like Ryse tries to introduce a new gameplay style to gamers and excels in some categories they punish it with a 4. In the meantime, games like Call of Duty, Killzone: Shadow Fall and God of War that rehash the same old gameplay get scores of 7, 8 or even 9.

Trolls that haven't played Ryse and only think that they know everything about the game from reviews need not apply;)

I watched quite a bit of gameplay on the 24 hour marathon feed and it looked pretty darn cool, if I get an X1 I'll definitely be picking this up.

I guess there is bias against Knack too since it has 4 stars with more reviews.

Personally, I'm not all that impressed with the graphics either, but most reviewers are and still directly adress the mind numbing combat.

I know quite a few freinds on facebook that "love it" . but tahts just it, casual gamers might love it, people who play games constantly probably won't because it has no depth, no challenge... its just a flashy interactive experiance. but then that sums up a large ammount of AAA games as of later.

@slader236: While I agree there some stupid instances of reviews using the repetitive or more of the same excuse, I cant help but wonder if Ryse is as good as you claim in the OP. Dude, I wante the game to be good, hell I want every game to be. Don't see the sense in hoping a game is bad, if you're a gamer. Arkham origins got dinged for being more of the same, then a few weeks later COD and BF4 get 8's for being, well COD and BF. It is ridiculous. But I get the feeling Ryse will be fun for a play through, as a rental. I cant see spending $60 on it. I am a sucker for gory blade kills, but reading the reviews I have, it just doesn't seem to be anything special other than graphics. I'll find out and post when I play it.

I watched a playthrough of the game.. You encounter the same frickin 3 types of enemies throughout the entire game with the occasional goat head. Repetitive to say the least.

The vast majority of people want a next gen game with next gen graphics. Ryse delivers in that sense but from reviews, that's pretty much all it delivers.

From what I've seen and the short period I play it it's a fun game but I can see it getting very repetitive after a few hours.

The game has a great story, unparalleled graphics and a simple gameplay. But in the end it is fun to play, even if it is a game you won't be playing two or three times. Reviewrs are generally just lost. Each game is judged with a different set of criteria. What can be the main cause of a game scoring a low score might be utterly ignored in another.

And as far as nextgen is concerned, I'd bet a toe that more people are happy with Ryse than with any other launch title.

Lol, well here on systems wars Ryse is a flop. But as I have the actual game, no way in the world is it a 4. Its a solid 8 with a ten in graphics. So yeah, here its a flop. But Im not surprised at all its getting good reviews from people who bought the game. And no way is it 4 damn hours. 8 to 10 at least.

It's possible to like a bad game. That's fine. I really loved some bad games last gen too. I loved Kameo and Chromehounds, for example. But I knew they were critically bad games and clearly understood why. The flaws and weaknesses were always apparent...but I simply played in spite of them.

As such, there's no need to bash someone's personal taste. Anyone saying Ryse is a "good" game is damn liar, as "good" and "bad" are objective commentaries. It's an objectively bad game just as Chromehounds was. Anyone saying they "like" Ryse is expressing a personal, subjective opinion to which everyone is entitled to. Amazon reviews should be accepted from the perspective of whether or not some people are enjoying their time with the game in spite of its many flaws, and that YOU may enjoy it too. But that doesn't mean it's objectively a good game.

I'm on the hunt for my next games and usually go of reviews as a good guide, but all the troll and fanboy reviews make it really hard to work out what to get yet. Ryse, Dead rising, cod or battlefield all have wide ranging reviews it's hard to tell which is legit.

GS played the game and obviously the reviewer just didn't like any of it. Shit happens, lol. But I'm honestly having a ball with the game and its multiplayer. My inner Spartacus fan is in love with it.

Desperate times call for desperate measures I suppose.

I'm on the last level currently but I am pretty impressed with it myself. If you play on normal or easy it will not offer much resistance. I've been playing on the hardest available as the true hardest difficulty is locked until you beat it it looks like.

If you like assassins creed combat or batman this will be fun for you. And you don't have to do the executions but they can truly help you in a pinch to heal yourself a little.

its up to the gamer as to how fun it will be is the point. I play on hard and have fun mixing up my attacks with heavy and light and some power ups now and then and it's well worth it to me.

plus it is downright gorgeous with a story that gets more compelling as you go.

ultimately I would have given it a 7 at least as i haven't tried the MP yet

The gameplay is simple and repetitive. Not much more than a button masher with great graphics. Story so far is good. Better than a lot of other games I've played and voice acting is great.

Also don't think its a 8-10 hr game. With how far I am now I'm thinking I will finish in the 5 or 6 hr mark. Overall a fun game but in my opinion much better than a 4.

It sorta reminds me of Heavenly Sword at the PS3 launch (don't remember if it was exactly a launch title...but it was close). Beautiful graphics and short game. Only real difference was Heavenly Sword had fantastic gameplay.

E3 really tainted the game. But I agree, a 4 should be reserved for broken games. Knack and Ryse deserve better.

Not even Gameinformer would score as low as 4 and the said dialing a phone number was more fun.

Actually, I think they were both reviewed by McShea, hence why they got such low scores. I think if either were reviewed by anyone else, they would have maybe got 6 each?
