Salt and Sanctuary - come celebrate this GOTY contender.

Decided to change the title considering dark souls 3 conversation should take place in the dark souls thread... I have yet to play dark souls 3, but I am a few hours into SS and it is marvelous. The combat system is great, the game design basically plays as 2d souls with platforming, great boss fights and tons to explore. It also has a massively robust skill tree.

Also, I got a chance to play coop (local only) and it is without a doubt my proffered method of play. It was seamless and added a new layer to how we cleared enemies and fought bosses.

As it stands Salt and sanctuary is quickly rising to the top of my GOTY list... Anyone on the fence of which game they prefer?

Off the fence and picked Salt And Sanctuary.

I'm tired of medieval souls, so i'm waiting for Ni On.

I need to put more hours into Salt and Sanctuary. But yeah, it's really neat.

Dark Souls 3 is installing, so my attention will be going towards that.

I was supposed to buy it and then I got to playing Stardew and Factorio... I'll have to pick it up at some point when I find the time to play it, maybe after ds3+Uncharted

Played neither, but want to play both.

Too many good fucking games stacking up, I don't know when I'll ever find the time.

S&S was great, but suffers like all Souls games IMO in the replay dept.

You ask what's better: a game that copies Dark Souls or Dark Souls lol Hmmmm, I will go with a game that inspired the other game in the first place, Dark Souls.

@ConanTheStoner: S+S is a special game... It scratches about every conceivable itch for a 2d platformer with some serious risk/reward. I highly recommend it.

Just for the record, April is offering us, S+S, Enter the Gungeon, Alienation and Hyper Light Drifter... So on the heels of your sentiment about being overwhelmed, my god yes. It's comforting knowing that my 15 to 20 dollar purchases this month will most likely lambast the lot of 60 dollar purchases I've made over the past year. Indie is king.

Dark Souls 3 isn't out yet, and Salt and Sanctuary isn't out on PC yet, so I've played neither.

Since Itgaki not involved anymore with team Ninja , i doubt Ni Oh can be any better games than OG Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2. Yaiba Ninja Gaiden Z , Ninja Gaiden 3 / Razors Edge were meh at most :(

Damn. I would not want to choose. I love salt and sanctuary. Really enjoying it. Its been a LONG time (SoTN) since I enjoyed a 2d game this much (Rayman was amazing but different class). Souls is Souls.......................................AWESOME.

Easiest choice ever. Dark Souls 3. Cannot stand the srt style SaS is going for. Its so bad that it reminds me of my drawing skills. Dark Souls 3 in the other hand has perfected everything in a Souls game. Less than 24h to go OMFG!!!

It took me about 60 hours to go thru it the first time only because I was using the wiki heavily, doing some grinding, and beat all the optional bosses. I understand you can run thru the game in 20-25 hours. Good God, it took me a small eternity to reach the Sanctuary of Fire and Sky.

I had the time of my life and got to Hager's Cavern in NG+ before I got tired of it.

@silversix_: I see nothing wrong with the art other than the character faces seem kind of generic. I don't mind the slightly less dark tone either. Dark souls art makes me want to slit my wrists sometimes.

DS shits all over SS, but I am getting SS for PC.

Any way, Ni Oh seems that it's taking the Souls mechanics so it will be playable, so unless there are just color swap enemies i don't see how the game can be bad.

What? One is a cheap downloadable game and another a full priced premium title.

Both, really. Ska games are friggin awesome (I mean, Dishwasher 2 Vampire Smile was the tits). And, well, if you liked the other Souls games and want more there's really no substitute.

I was debating between S&S and enter the gungeon but i got EtG because whats the point in playing S&S right now if im already getting dark s ouls 3?

Dont have too, even Dom said SS is harder than shit..ala Dark/Demon souls. There's a reason you haven't finished any of those games and it has nothing to do with your ability as a gamer, in fact you excel at old school p type games, its more the fact of the constant dying and having to learn each enemy or be killed in 1-3 blows or having the thrill of finally getting by 1 part to have an environmental death.

It's more patience to craw into each area and try and learn the enemy you are facing, then crawling to next or risk losing your souls.

I almost finished Demon Souls, but I'd had enough and that's why I sent it to you without want it back or me not buying BloodBorne even though its a AAAE Sony exclusive.

@Heil68: I will say that the souls formula offers both the highest highs in terms of satisfaction with achievement. . When you are pushing through the game it is fun and it's hard to deny feeling accomplished... Where I get hung up is losing the desire to continue pressing... Bloodborne for example, was a great game, had loads of fun with it until I hit a point where I was running around feeling kind of (I hate to say it) kind of bored that pressing further yielded nothing more than increased challenge. I didn't get stuck, in fact when I quit bloodborne I had been on a roll... I just lost the interest to continue doing the same thing for another dozen hours.

All that though is personal preference. I adore 2d platformers, (far more than third/first person perspectives) and I really like the souls formula of exploration and discovery. I'm thinking this one has a shot because it's shorter, it'll hold my attention and the couch coop is smooth as butter. I really like playing the game with the boys.

No point, was working on Dark Souls 2 these past few weeks, Got Dark Souls 3 for this week, by the time I'm done with that, Enter the Gungeon and Remake, Salt and Sanctuary will be out on PC. Mediocrestation4 won't get play until Unfarted 4: A Thief's Rear-End

@TheEroica: Been playing s and s for days now. Love this game. Got 4 characters. Right now i am working on my level 25 warhammer heavy build for massive damage.

@TheEroica: I'm now about 4 hours into dark souls 3 and near 20 ish into S+S...

Don't make me choose between them though, i love them both! I think. Early days yet. But i thiiink S+S may be my goty, though DSiii is just nipping at its heels.

That aside, I'm not sure I get the reference between "premium" and "cheap download" game concept. I only care how a game feels when I have a controller in my hands... 1 hour with salt and sanctuary pushed my first Witcher 3 playthrough back to the shelf... Just like music, great games is great games... Doesn't matter the journey it took to get to your TV screen... If it's great it deserves to be celebrated.

@Midnightshade29: which class/weapon set do you like most? I just started shelving my sword and shield in place of a greatsword (which I'm focusing on in my skills tree.)

That's a waste of money from the people who made The Dishwasher, which was nice, but not that nice.

@jg4xchamp: out of curiosity what was your beef with vampire...? My biggest gripe was the hand cramps from playing that game. It got a little overly chaotic

The art ruins the game for me.

Tired of seeing 3rd grader art in games.

Once you grasp the battle system it's not all that interesting, the visual eventually get tiring and stale, the enemy designs become less inspired and as a result the boss fights themselves are more tedious than exciting. As a side scrolling beat-em up it's still good, because game feel, nice mash flow, and general core gameplay loop staying enjoyable for the long haul. That and I learned my lesson a bit with Axiom Verge, a bit, it all sounded great with a game paying homage to Metroid, but then you play it and you realize, oh that's all it does, is pay homage to Metroid at every corner.

Now Death's Gambit looks like my kind of 2d soulsy thing.

I'm gonna make a prediction that Salt and sanctuary ends up in your top 5 this year though. Not that any man can truly tell what Picasso is thinking of course. Just a hunch.

@jg4xchamp: what can I say... The souls games are great, I just lose focus halfway through. I just don't have the will power to keep pushing. Demon souls was hard as **** though. Screw that game.

As for final Fantasy... Good god, the direction those games have taken are the antithesis of what I'm looking for in games. I have no doubt square Enix will continue slowly cutting the franchise to bits.
