Satisfied PS2 customers will more than likely transfer to the PS3.

no gamer buys the ps3 because it has the name playstation. They buy it because they like it. The transition from ps1 to ps2 took a while for me but it will happen with the ps3. Ps1---->Ps2---->Ps3

I was very satisfied with my PS2 (and PS1 for that matter), but I won't be getting a PS3, at least not before a significant price drop.

I agree the Xbox brand name isn't as strong as Sony's Playstation brand name. Does this mean it will remain as such? No.

And it's not just Halo that the Xbox franchise is bringing to the table in terms of gamers and casuals. Halo is just a heavy player nowadays.

I don't think the markets between the Wii and PS3 are as different as you probably do.

the-very-best

They are different. Very different. Most casuals need Madden, GTA and they will turn to PS3 or the 360 for that (my guess is they go to the PS3 of course).

Non gamers who just want quick fun will head to the Wii.

Sony is still the dominant brand in the console war though. I'll try to use a different market as an example. Motorolla hurt Nokia and Samsung with their Razr but Nokia still remains on top due to being the preferred brand for mobile phones among consumers, despite Motorola's popularity.

Creative, Zune all have attempted to steal Ipod's market share (and while they have stolen a bit) Ipod remains on top because it's the preferred MP3 player among consumers despite the popularity of the others (not to mention the cheaper price of the others...)

I dunno if that helps you understand what I was trying to say but your points are also quite valid.

Quick question: what's a "non-gamer" once he/she starts gaming?

You can keep giving out of market examples, but the simple fact of the matter is our market isn't that predictable. Market carry over already failed a very well known company at least once in our market. Brand name is nice, but it's not a definitive basis of success.

If history has taught us anything, it's that the success of a previous console doesn't equate to it's predecessor being as successful.

N64 for example.

People will buy a console for games and price, not brand loyalty.

I agree with this man....reminds me of the gas crisis in the 60s when no one bought Japanese vehicles, now they're scheduled to take the number 2 spot (Toyota) as a car manufacturer.

[QUOTE="Sensui1986"]Lots of people will just buy the PS3 because it bears the name of "Playstation", instead of just looking up information and then choose to buy a console.-Sir-Poof-

Maybe thats because for the past 2 gens it was a guarantee that u were gonna get amazing games.with the PS brand.

not really... non-gamers don't look up the games that will be available for it. They don't know about the flaws of a console or the positive things about it. The only thing they know is that playing a game once in a while is fun. People that game a little more and hang out in forums to see what games are best to buy and what games are not, those are the people that tend to switch more. But the PS brand got the attention of a lot of non-gamers because games like: Buzz, singstar, guitar hero, ... or lots of them just want the latest version of Fifa, they just don't seem to notice all these fifa games are the same, and will just buy a console for that, being convinced there will be some other fun games later on they can buy.

lol, I just use the word non-gamer because it's what everyone on SW is familiar with. Wii/DS are targeting gamers who just want some quick fun..."non gamers" ie, they don't play games much.

Casuals are a little different. They play games that are popular, and for various reasons, like wanting to be cool for playing GTA. Casuals also like sport games, like Madden etc.

Btw, I agree with your last point and you have to realize I'm not saying PS3 is guaranteed success. Even in my topic title I'm just saying the "most likely" scenario is that consumers that were happy with their PS2 will transfer to the PS3. I'm not saying it's 100% assured.

I call losing DQIX to the DS a pretty heavy blow for the eastern markets and Sony.

the-very-best

Agreed, but it's not a huge factor in the console war. If DQX heads to Wii then that's a big problem. Sony will lose hardcore gamer sales to the Wii in Japan if that happens.

FF is still on PS3 exclusively though, which is why I think Sony will retain its strong hold on Japan eventually.

Not a huge factor? Sony loses a huge eastern franchise from the PS namebrand and it's not a factor? I don't care that it's on a handheld, that doesn't diminsh the fact it's no longer found on a PS product.

DQ trumps FF in Japan BTW.

I know it outsells FF in Japan.

I just mean if DQ was on Wii that would be a much bigger concern for Sony than DQ going to DS. Keep in mind DQ may still go to PS3 eventually. Level 5 are just going where the cash is now (They should have made it for PS2 but whatever).

I mean, tell me this: Wouldn't it be a much bigger deal if it were on the Wii? That would effectively end Sony's hold on Japan in my view so it's a big concern for them if DQX heads to Wii.

you underestimate the consumers ability to think for themselves rather than just blindly following a brand name.  I was very satisfied with my PS2, but right now, the PS3 just isn't cutting it for me.

I know, my question was really rhetorical. The "non-gamer" people refer to here is essentially the casual gamer once they start gaming. The only difference is, going back to how this market is dynamic, that these new casuals are entering gaming a little different than in the past (seeing a sports title for instance).

"Casuals" don't always have to like the same games, nor does the limit of "popular" games always need to remain the same. Games like Wii Sports have the ability (if they haven't already) to be the latest "popular". See I don't shoe horn casuals all under the same roof, nor do i shoe horn the idea that only this group of games are what do/will attract casuals.

I'm just repeating something most people already know but it seems to be an overlooked point that hardcore gamers/casuals who were/are happy with their PS2 will more than likely make the transfer to the PS3 in 2 years or so.

SW is a little surprising to me because most people in here already own a current gen (PS3, 360, Wii) console yet traditionally consumers wait around 2 years before buying a new console.

In 2 years the PS3 will already have all the major series that made the PS2 so successful.

"But that's waiting". No. I'm not arguing that the console will be worth the purchase in 2 years. I'm saying that's when PS3 will win/start to obviously win the console war.

Just want to point that out because many seem to overlook that. Anyway, what do you think about it?

Interesting. I still play my PS2 and have no intentions of buying a PS3 till they include rumble..

Woah. Huge difference between the casuals that like GTA/Madden compared to the ones who like Wiisports.

What we don't know yet is if the casuals who like Wiisports/Nintendogs/Brain Training outweigh the amount of casuals that like GTA/Madden etc.

That's why I find it hard to predict whether or not Wii will sell extremely well.

it's not a simple as that. Some people will be repeat customers, but other people are not loyal to any one console. casuals jsut buy what ever the "coolest" system is. the one that gets the franchises they like, and the one that they cab afford, and with halo and GTA not being a timed exclusive any more, along with games like gears, i think alot of ps2 customers are going to go to the 360

It should be a concern regardless. It's a lost game regardless of where it went (and the Wii is a getting a DQ game, just to make sure we're on the same page). Level 5 doesn't determine where DQ games, the publisher and IP owner, SE, determines those kind of choices.

And keep in mind DQ, FF etc could all leave the PS namebrand (just going of your "Keep in mind DQ may still go to PS3 eventually" statement).

It would be bigger for the Wii if it was going there, however, it's still lost from Sony's library either way.

That's a bit different in my view. They play games from all genres yet have preferences to certain genres.

Casual gamers that like GTA are usually aged really young (8-15 trying to prove they're rebellious, or 18-24, more mature gamers who can handle the parodies provided in the game but enjoy the heavy violence).

Casual gamers that like Wiisports/Brain Training are just looking for quick fun, nothing serious whereas GTA is lengthy which is why it's not easy to rank those casual gamers under the same category.

Is there any actual data on the age range for GTA games?

Further more I've watched casuals like my wife, or my friend's wife, or even my father-in-law play something like Wii Sports for hours. I mean we can generalize all day but it shows nothing.

I'm going to stand by that they're essentially the same they just have slightly different preferences.

I actually fit the kind of person the TC is talking about. I have owned both a PS1 and PS2, and at first the PS3 was the obvious choice. Of course, with the $600 price tag I had to think a little, and I simply have decided to wait and see how the PS3 turns out. The reason for waiting is not simply because its a Playstation, but its because the series I know and love are on the Playstation. MGS, Ace Combat, ZOE, Ratchet and Clank, Armored Core, Gran Turismo, and some other of my favorite series are the reason for buying a PS3. If I bought a Wii or Xbox360, I would miss out on enjoying many of my favorite games. Sure, some of my favorites will also be on the 360, but all of them will be on the PS3. I'll spend the extra cash if thats what it takes to play the games I like.

OK...fair enough but I don't think we'd see wives or father-in laws playing GTA would we? (I know I'm generalizing but still I think I have a point)

Btw, I remembering reading about the kids liking GTA, and the 18-24 yr olds appreciating the parodies...I'm not just making it up but I couldn't find anything when I googled it so you don't need to believe me on that one.

You're not really a casual though. I mean, you're on this site and you're informed. I do see your point though.

Most casuals will just buy the PS3 once it starts getting advertised towards them. Marketing + Brand Name are the most powerful tools to reel in consumers in any market really.

I'm not saying they're "doomed" anywhere.

But each blow hurts. Another blow would be something like the Xbox 360. Yeah it's slow over there, right? Right. Yet it keeps getting this new support (new for the Xbox brand) in the form of RPGs. So a game like BD spiked sales but it didn't send the Xbox 360 flying off the shelves compared to it's competitors. What happens when more and more of these titles release and if the trend of spikes continues? You end up with a market in the region that stands a much better chance. The Xbox 360's RPG line up is a small blow that could be pretty heavy depending on what time shows us.

The Wii and/or Xbox 360 could create such a large series.

I don't know they've never tried (mine at least). This is going back to preference. You're not as likely to see a hardcore gamer that likes FPS play a RPG. Same thing here, just different style of gamer imho.

It's not so much I don't believe you, in fact I do, but I typically like numbers. :)

(sorry I didn't quote, damn glitches)

All valid points.

However...

"The Wii and/or 360 could create such large series". So can the PS3.

GTA was practically born on the PS2. GOW, DMC too. A few others but those are the main ones...

Well that is faulty thinking in my opinion becuase they may buy Ps3, but they will have bought a 360 or a Wii. What this does is the following:

Satisfied gamecube customers will by a wii cause it is hot RIGHT now.

Satisfied X-box gamers will by a 360 cause it's hot right now.

These gamers will NOT by a Ps3 for the most part

The satisfied Ps2 gamer will get one and one of the other two for now.

So with that logic the Ps3 will get Less cause some for the satasfied Ps2 people will be happy with their Wii or 360 and decide to not get a Ps3. and the other two systems will only gain MAJOR ground.

Fair enough. I don't think we're going to agree on that casual/hardcore thing but I don't think you're wrong exactly. You do have a point but I like my point too, lol.

And I agree with you, numbers are much more helpful in an argument. I couldn't find them though but I'm pretty sure I read about those GTA numbers a while ago. Could be wrong I suppose.

[QUOTE="MgunHunter"] If I bought a Wii or Xbox360, I would miss out on enjoying many of my favorite games. Sure, some of my favorites will also be on the 360, but all of them will be on the PS3. I'll spend the extra cash if thats what it takes to play the games I like. Magical_Zebra

Why not just buy all the consoles then?

Because I don't have much of a reason to buy a Wii or 360, since the games I like have always been with Playstation. I'm sure if I owned an original Xbox for a few years then there would be games I felt that I needed to play on the 360. For example, Xbox owners who played Halo 1 and 2 are going to want to play Halo 3, and the only way to do that is to buy a 360.

I am just like that. I have followed great games like MGS for many years, and in order to continue enjoying those games I'll have to by a PS3.

Thats the reason for buying a console IMO. I guess in a sense its brand loyalty, but I think its a bit more justified than just, "Its Playstation!"

Anyway, what do you think about it?
the-very-best
i think they will get a ps3 becuase they like the same game but some of the teen have grown older and want more bloody and volent game so some might get a 360. also it hink people will get wii and w8 for the ps3 price to come down so they can have both.

If history has taught us anything, it's that the success of a previous console doesn't equate to it's predecessor being as successful.

N64 for example.

People will buy a console for games and price, not brand loyalty.

Donkey_Puncher
ok nintendo has been losing sale every since the nes and the gb. it is because for people grow tired of the same francise you have to add more thing in so it feels new. look at the people who bought ps1, now let see how many got a ps2. you can say most got a ps2 because they like the ps1 classics and the newly added franchises. also game like mgs and ff were on nintendo but mored to playstation so those ff and mgs move over to playstion.

well no point in looking into the future, and making assumptions of what is going to happen. for consoles its whats going on right now. if a console does not deliver from day one, its not a great buy. and well yes the ps3 will grow in sales when theres a price drop. and right now the only thing thats stopping ppl from buying a ps3 is the price. and the lack of games.

ok microsoft dos shooter and sony does rpg. the 360 and it controler was not designed for rpg it was more of shooting. the ps3 controler was design for more of an everything feel. shooter on the 360 feel better. so if xbox port a ps3 game to the 360 it just wont feel the sam as having it on the ps3.

let look back at the ps2 it was bashed so much and people said it would not last. look into the future it broke the record of most sold in all of time. ok let look at the 360 6 months back (Pre-gears) no one really wanted it and it was even on amazon for $100 ea now look once the new batch of games came out it started selling more.

How many people bought Sega Genesis bought Saturn? Bought Dreamcast?

SNES the godliest console to grace this earth, how many did N64 have again?

It may or may not happen.

All you need for just about any JRPG is a dpad/analog, a button to accept, a button to decline, and a button to enter a menu system. :|

How you figured the Xbox 360 controller was now designed to handle an RPG is beyond me.

Not me. I was satisfied with my PS2, and the PS3 seemed like a disappointment to me.

You'd think that most SNES owners would get a N64....but alas.goblaa
Well if you want to look to the past to predict the future, look at what happened with ps1 and ps2.

I think that this is the year that Sony gets smacked back into line. They have been so successful with their previous two consoles that they are getting to cocky. This year when the outcome of sales comes I think Sony will be humbled and really start to try hard like they used to. Sony won't flop because they made a smart move with blu-ray (opinion) and as that starts to nudge dvd out ps3 sales will be increased. But the playsation will not lose in the overall cycle of consoles, however in the first year maybe second year they won't be on top. In the end (I personaly) think PS3 wins, but not nearly to the extreme of the ps2.

Odd.

I own over 100 games for the PSX and PS2 each, and I have sadly have no interest in the PS3 until mid 2008 some time. I don't think the transfer consumer idea is fully supported. Nintendo is a great example of this concept not working.

With this mentality one would essentially be saying Sony will always be on top, which is rather foolish IMHO.

-RPGamer-
You disagree with this concept and then state you will be getting a PS3 in 2008? lol

MgunHunter
Thats the same reason I'm getting a PS3. If I don't I'll miss on most of favorites like Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, MGS, FF, GoW, and others. I'm also getting a Wii because earlier I used to own a Gamecube and I was satisfied with it and Metriod Prime. I stay true to the companies I like because my favorite franchises are on them. Plus I currently own a PS1, PS2, and PSP so it makes sense for me to get a PS3 if I was satisfied with all three of those systems.
