Ok let's start from the beginning.
Playstation 1, without doubt destroyed the competition with better hardware, SEGA went out with the Saturn with what would be the equivalent to the PS3 except 3 times worse due to not having the tools required to code for such hardware, so in the end every port looked horrendous vs the PS1 release.
N64 whilst having better visuals had bad framerates and was limited by cart space, definitely a clear win for PS1.
Dreamcast arrives on the scene and blows everything out of the water in 1999 , it receives a plethora of quality titles and some ports from Playstation with highly upgraded graphics and framerates (most notable being the Resident Evil 2 port.. 60FPS and 480P VGA goodness).
Playstation 2 is on the horizon and Sony have built a huge cult following through what is a talented and awesome machine, the Playstation 1.
Dreamcast is struggling with sales, and the PS2 would be the console to cement it's demise.
PS2 is hyped beyond belief supporting DVD playback, incredible graphics and some way way overblown specs.
Playstation 2 is a major success relying on the hearts of fans and the sheer amount of marketing muscle.
Microsoft want to dabble in the console market, they hit the road with a raw power approach and market the XBOX as the next coming of gaming experiences in the living room which performance wise it delivers.
Financially crippled and due to the fierce competition from Sony, Microsoft struggle internally hemorrhaging money due to the sheer cost to produce such powerful machines and sell them at competitive prices.
Microsoft would rely on their MASSIVE amount of money power and the XBOX would turn out to be a success and a new entry to the console market.
Microsoft then quickly move all development to the XBOX 360 and stop OG XBOX development and sales in 2006 with the release of the 360.
A sleek looking design, powerful, well built and a delight to code for, the 360 is the Playstation 2 of the gen prior and the XBOX together, it combines easy to code for hardware with powerful enough hardware to stand above in multiplatform titles much liek the XBOX before it.
Sony rely on marketing hype and their large fan base to bring what would be the Playstation 3 at a whopping 700 USD.
You would think Sony had gone mad.. and yeah they literally did, a rushed hardware design with a thrown in Nvidia GPU, it is hardware wise a disaster to code for and the GPU is inferior to that of the XBOX 360, however does have a rather powerful CPU, but in such a way would take many years to truly get anything out of it to even match the 360 in terms of overall presentation, we would see such titles arrive in it's later years such as The Last Of Us.
In the end the PS3 and 360 ended out rather even, however the 360 has the advantage of having the superior ports of that generation much like OG XBOX before it.
Now PS4 & XB1 are basically the same hardware, XB1 has slightly slower hardware, they are underpowered on purpose to rake in as much cash as possible, and both companies now feed off of marketing hype and their huge fan base.
What we have here however it two great machines in terms of coding ability, basically akin to the original PS1.. slap in some code and you have almost every bit of the consoles performance on tap.
Now let's get to now..
Scorpio.
Microsoft are allowing Digital Foundry to show the machine off, let me just put this into words and say this as slowly as i can to make you understand, this console is going to have some real muscle behind it if MS are allowing DF to do this.
I'm a fan of all machines.. it's going to be exciting for those who are interested.
