This just in. With the breakup of THQ Sega will be acquiring Relic for $26.6 million. This means they've got two PC heavyweights under their belt now. Relic and Creative Assembly. Company of Heroes 2 also will be released sometime in March which surely will allow them to make back money on their investment rather quickly.

Yeah,as far as the home market goes,it seems the PC is their focus now,two of their three top selling franchises are PC only and now they have a third big one(maybe even four with Warhammer).

Again, Sega seems to at the end, going back to its American Roots and running from the japanese gamng market.

Well,I wouldn´t know about that,it seems that the main PC market is europe and asia while america is a mix of of both but a bit more leaning to consoles and japan is consoles.

How? Video games are more expensive in Europe than they are in the US. If Europe has a larger PC market, then that would logically mean it makes more money as well.

Weren't Sega just saying last year they were "re-evaluating" the business, cutting a bunch of studios, and basically eliminating everything but their most core franchises (as well as the obligatory move into mobile)? How'd that work out?

Seriously though, if they bought this studio and IP's along with it at a bargain basement price then maybe it will be a good move for them.

Last year Sega did say that, but they also mentioned that they had four franchises they'd guarantee for release which are Total War, Football Manager, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Aliens.

They also mentioned seeing the most success from their PC division which is why they bought Relic because Relic makes successful PC titles that fit right in line with Sega's current business.

Are you really discussing against actual facts provided by financial companies? One thing is your opinion, another thing is a fact.

And not really, from this gen alone for instance Mario Kart 7 sold more than any US made game and it was an exclusive to the Wii,the Wii Fit/sports are even higher up and even pokemon makes numbers that are sometimes higher than CoD,and CoD is a multiplatfrom release.

Same goes for New Super Mario Bros Wii.

Halo no longer makes the number of Halo 2 and 3(since you mentioned Halo before) and also it wasn´t even the best selling game of that gen,the PS2 had a few games that siold more than Halo 2 alone, like both GT3 and GT4(japan) and GTA San Andreas(Europe),as well as Vice City.

COH falls directly into SEGA's wheel house, what with the sucess they've had we Creative Assembly im sure CoH being under Sega's wing can only be a posotive for the franchise. So glad this one go picked up!

Kind of already a thread on this but, yay!

Warhammer is probably the only strategy game that I played a little bit of and actually kind of enjoyed. Would love to get into the series and would love to see more coming soon.

I'm happy about this. I just hope Sega:

- Treats Relic as well as they treat Creative, allowing them generous budgets and plenty fo time to work on their games.

- Continue to support their PC community.

- Finds success with these franchises.

Piracy is a big issue on the PC gaming front. HEre's hoping more and more PC gamers move away from that kind of thinkign and continue to support great PC franchises like these.

Also lol I mentioned halo for money making PROFIT, which all highest PROFIT making franchises are form the U.S. Halo 2 at one point was the highest grossing game of all time. Also lol at only being able to mention around 4 games. Crash bandicoot has had no games for 2 years and the 2 years in between that and the last actual platformer was around 4-5 years and it still made more money than most japanese games.

They don't have a larger PC market, U.S. residents spend way more money on PC games than Europe. 80% of WOW subscribers for exampleDerveCreaves

Where did you get all this nonsense from? The majority of WOW users are from Asia, not the US, with China alone accounting for half of WOW's worldwide user base. In fact, China has the largest PC gaming market in the world, making way more money from the PC platform than the US.

DUDE, the games that made the highest amount of money in gaming are from freaking America and most of those profits were from American buyers, this is common sense. Asia is not a bigger gaming market in NA, and Japan is not a bigger gaming country than the U.S. DerveCreaves

Who said anything about Japan? The article is talking about Asia as a whole, not just Japan. Korea also has a large gaming market of its own, while China's gaming market is huge, third only to the US and Japan in national revenues (but easily ahead of both when it comes to PC gaming).

"lol" Mario Kart 7 sold more than every U.S. based games????? lol. WIIFit/WIISports came bundled with Wiis and all kind of other bundled deals. Halo 2 the highest grossing game of all time? Again, where are you getting all this nonsense from? Halo 2 wasn't even the highest-grossing American game up until then, let alone the highest-grossing game of all time. American classics like Asteroids, Defender, Mortal Kombat and NBA Jam grossed way more revenues than Halo 2, and even these games pale in comparison to the revenues grossed by Japanese classics like Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Super Mario Bros 1 & 3, Street Fighter II, etc.

How? Video games are more expensive in Europe than they are in the US. If Europe has a larger PC market, then that would logically mean it makes more money as well.

Games being more expensive also gives a greater incentive to pirate them or purchase fewer games, though.

Perhaps. But as someone has already pointed out in this thread, the revenues generated from the European gaming market is larger than the North American market, and is second only to Asia overall. Considering how PC gamers make up a larger portion of the European market (much like the non-Japanese Asian markets), that would mean it has a larger PC gaming market than North America as well.

I thought Sega was done?

lonewolfman10

That was over a decade ago. Since then, Sega has been doing very well for itself financially.

Sega's presence in the console market may have been dwindling, but at the same time, they've remained a dominant force in the arcade market (where they've been making billions in Asia) and have had a growing presence in the PC market.

Not quite. The Sammy side of Sega Sammy manufactures Pachinko and Pachislot machines, while the Sega side manufactures arcade video game machines and develops/publishes video game software for consoles, computers, and mobiles.

My hopes for an Epic Scale Warhammer 40K RTS just took a few steps closer to fruition :D

As you can probably guess I'm stoked that Sega got Relic, for me it's the perfect mix. Putting Relic in the same stable as Creative Assembly could produce some legendary games.

Those millions should have been given to Yu Suzuki so he can get started on Shenmue 3. *slow grin*white_sox
Sega keeps making so many Yakuza games, yet they still refuse to make Shenmue 3... Why can't they just use the same engine? It shouldn't be anywhere near as expensive today as it was back in the days.

But then, Yu Suzuki hasn't been making any games for a few years now... Maybe he could be working on Shenmue 3 in secret?

It´s true, someone even posted a thread with an article by a major finace company last year here on the forums, don´t know wich though, wich pretty much confirmed that as far as revenue goes, the EU was a bigger market than the US for games.

And its a well known fact that asia is the biggest one,and asia isnt just japan.

V3rciS

DUDE, the games that made the highest amount of money in gaming are from freaking America and most of those profits were from American buyers, this is common sense. Asia is not a bigger gaming market in NA, and Japan is not a bigger gaming country than the U.S.

Man it's just common sense:

NA population 330m (USA 300m + 30m of Canada)
EU population 500m
Asia population 3.8 billion

its common knowledge that there's a bigger market in asia. but these are western-focused titles and asia with their hordes of grindfest MMOs are irrelevant to this topic. how many people are going to be playing CoH in asia? this thread got derailed beyond belief

Relic is also working on MOBA though and those are extremely popular in Asia, far more than any console could ever be there

Those Asian MMO's make a crap-load of money though, more than most Western games even. You'll be surprised to know that the highest-grossing FPS game of all time is NOT a Call of Duty game... but is in fact a South Korean MMO FPS called CrossFire, which has been grossing $1 billion (mostly in China) every year and counting. It's like the FPS equivalent of WOW (which has also been grossing $1 billion every year).
