Hey.... They predicted Mario and Sonic would sell at least 4 million and nobody believed them ;)

http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/news/sega-pigeonholing-wii-only-for-casual-is-a-mistake/?biz=1

"I do believe that a lot of Western publishers are only looking at the Wii for casual and family gaming, and I think that's a mistake."

During GDC we met with Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat (full interview still in the pipeline) and discussed his "Wii rules" for making games on Nintendo platforms. In light of Sega's success on the Wii and DS, we posed a similar question to Jeffery.

"I think really we look at the whole Nintendo demographic - Wii and DS - as a different market from the traditional video game market. I guess we are starting in a great place because we have Sonic and Sonic does translate really well onto the Nintendo platforms. But when it comes to other properties and other game development we just need to think about it in a completely different way than we would if we're building for PS3 and Xbox 360. I think we'll see more and more going into this year and beyond that games that are built for a number of systems just will not be successful on the Wii; the Wii audience is going to demand stuff that is built specifically for it," he explained.

That said, hardcore gamers on the Wii may not be getting enough traditional gaming to satisfy their needs as developers and publishers rush to flood the Wii market with more casual fare. Sega sees this as an opportunity, though, and believes the market dynamics on Wii will be changing.

"I think [the casual mindset has made it tough on hardcore gamers], especially from the Western publishers during the first year or so of the Wii's life. However, going forward I think that the Wii is going to be a very good place for hardcore gamers to be," Jeffery said. "If you think about Condemned for instance, in hindsight Condemned would be a great game to play with the Wii remote. [The game] is all about melee combat and brute force, and using the [motion controls] to [attack] would be awesome. Ironically, it could have translated very well. Condemned was built from the ground up as a very high-end audio-visual experience, though, so that's why it's appearing on the PS3 and 360 systems."

He continued, "But I do think going forward there is very much a place for the hardcore gamers on the Wii and there's a big opportunity for publishers to take advantage of that because we've seen the success of Resident Evil on Nintendo platforms, and I believe that will continue. But I do also believe that a lot of Western publishers are only looking at the Wii for casual and family gaming, and I think that's a mistake - I think there's a lot more opportunity there on the Wii. The Wii isn't just about Wii Tennis and Mario & Sonic; it's about so much more."

So will Sega try to lead on the hardcore front for Wii? "I do think Sega is in a good position to look at the Wii market because we've got this great relationship with Nintendo and some proven success on the Wii, so I think we are in a good position to look at the totality of the Wii market and not just the area that the mass, wide market media is talking about right now, which is this living room, family play stuff. So I think that the early years, the first 18 months or so on the Wii is all about that - mass market acceptance and adoption - but the Wii as a platform has way much more to offer than that, and hardcore gamers traditionally love Nintendo as well. There's no reason why they should be excluded or excommunicated from the Nintendo world," Jeffery concluded.

You should have underlined this - " Condemned was built from the ground up as a very high-end audio-visual experience, though, so that's why it's appearing on the PS3 and 360 systems."

If Metroid Prime 3 isn't a core game then what is?

I mean it's a First Person Shooter with Environmental Puzzles and a slightly non-linear design. Plus you use the nunchuck as a grapple beam. How cool is that? It got Great scores from Gamespot (8.5) and IGN (9.5).

Plus it has pirates! SPACE pirates!

I agree completely.

Look how good re4 ported to the wii. I think re5 would be equally amazing on the wii.

Godfather on the wii made me want a gta game for the wii. A true ground up experience. That game's combat is so casual, visceral and yet imprecise. Sound familiar? That's wii motion sensing to a tee. Of course shooting would be very precise, compared to other consoles anyway.

Ultimately though, I agree with tc because there are many gamers, hardcore gamers included, who are not impressed with the graphical upgrade in the ps3 and 360. The wii manages just fine at making games that are pretty much equal to ps3 and 360 experiences.

of course there are people who need the best visuals, but that is not hardcore. Just as many casuals love graphics, probably more actually.

well it comes to no suprise . its sales are whats gonna drive developers, havent you guys realised it isnt the system in dead end ,place that gets attention,, look at how fast n64 lost even with all the aaas it had it lost lots of developers , due to cartridge gamecube picked some up and then some it took nintendo major time to get back ,but ya ,, they predict but guess what ,,

heres somthing very good coming heres a statement found on a qand a on free radicals site concerning wii and timesplitters 4 and even a second sight 2

"we want to put timesplitters 4 on the wii ,,,, also we are looking into second sight 2

like i said alot of times even before wiis release this new control scheme opens doors, thats exactly what it did you see madden 07s rating on wii compared to 360 /ps3 it did wonders

i

it will win stealth belive it or not its already past the 20 mill mark ,, ps3 is only at 10 point somthing mill with 360 at 17 mill , and the week of march first guess what consoles were at the top 3 spots- the wii then the ds then the psp strange huh 2 nintendo platforms and 1 ps platform or should i say handheld which is far away from ds as possible to even be close to catch up

sales numbers dont lie and all my local walmarts shelves dont lie either ,, lol no wiis=sold to many people

and i live in a low populated area compared to florida , youd expect it not to sell as quick but guess what it does, no mater how big a city wii sold out and continues to do so i like 360 and ps3 and wii but its the truth wii is out to win ,, wii is gonna win and even if it doesnt guess what wins any way,, nintendo ,, , why because nintendo ds !!!! remember that gamecube came in third but gba came in first ,,, so the winner is nintendo lol will always be and every system since nes has broght good games you heard me say it every system ps ps2 xbox gc n64 name it they all had thier games,,

nes-mario 3 zelda metroid rad racer

snes rock n roll racing mario world mariokart zelda 3 dkc

genesis -sonic series streets of rage mortal kombat

n64 GOLDENEYE 007 PERFECT DARK ZELDA OOT

ps1NEED for speed 3 hotp ur suiit final fantasy

gc-resident evil series revamped- 0 1 2 3 cvx 4 zelda windwaker geist metroid made its return

ps2 final fantasy gow gt the getaway driver gta

just prime examples of all the good games thats graced a console, and why ppl complain i have no darn idea maybe they need to get out more ,,

as the wii continues to sell, there should be more third party developers bringing more hardcore games to the wii. just because the wii is not a graphical powerhouse like ps3 or 360 doesn't mean it can't handle more mature, hardcore games. if RE5 came to the wii first, people would be praising it!!! there will be growing pains for nintendo and third party developers, hopefully it will be over soon.

SEGA isn't predicting any such thing. He's saying there is an opportunity and a place for more "hardcore" games...but then in the next sentence he said nobody is making them because western developers only think of the Wii as a place to dump casual games.

Saying it has potential and opportunity is nowhere near the same thing as saying it is in the works.

I have a Wii and think it is a great console with TONS of untapped potential. Mainly because of all the casual games and nobody really willing to step up and try something new, exciting and different. I mean, Metroid 3 worked amazing with the Wii controls and we still aren't seeing many FPS coming down the pipeline. I would LOVE to see more serious games and effort put into the Wii.

BUt the fact is, SEGA isn't saying the Wii will be a hardcore gaming machine down the road. If anything, they seem to be saying the exact opposite because not enough devs are willing to tap into that potential and opportunity.

The Wii is easily the #1 console world wide. It is still selling out every single month. PLUS, it is easily the cheapest and easiest console to burn out games for. Yet developers can't be bothered it seems. They're too stuck in their stubborn, old mindset that the only way to sell your game is to focus on graphics.

I agree that if RE5 was on the Wii first, people would be going crazy. Instead, Capcom has come out saying they have no plans to put a REAL RE game on the Wii, because the Wii is too kiddie. Nope. An on rails, arcade shooter was all they could be bothered to put out. The Silent Hill team has said the same thing. Don't count on any of their games on the "kiddie" Wii.

Now Umbrella Chronicles has sold a million copies, and No More Heroes seems to be doing well. Any word on companies having second thoughts about their biases? Not yet, and I'm not about to hold my breath.

I wasn't sure what the guy at Sega was going to say, whether I would end up agreeing with him or not, but as it turns out he makes very good points.

I'm just waiting to see what type of hardcore games developers come up with for the Wii. I'm not saying that negatively, because you don't need PS3/360 graphics to have a hardcore game. Look at Ninja Gaiden, Metroid Prime, Final Fantasy X and XII, and those are just hardcore games from last gen. What I am trying to say is that I would love to see what ideas and games developers come up with, whether they use the Wii-mote for a game like condemned or... yeah some other idea.

I completely agree. It's following the exact path that the DS took (casual in the beginning - massively hardcore during the 2nd and 3rd years).

It already is a great place for hardcore gamers. But for hardcore audio and video-philes it just doesn't cut the mustard. If only they had made it native 480p...

I think the proof is already there. The best games on the Wii are Japanese ones, the shovelware or poor ports are mainly from American developers and even then American support is a fraction of Japanese support.

Wii for me is the single worst thing that happened to gaming so far, it does have minor games i would buy, 1-2 that would be, but a console in that price for 1-2 games is a HUGE DISASTER IMO

The president of Sega of America has commented on the news: "It's going to be fairly calculated. There have only been three months so far and the Olympics themselves are another four months away. We're expecting to sell quite a few million more globally, hopefully between now and the end of this year. Getting Mario and Sonic together in the first place took so long, every decade, to make that happen. So I think rushing into any other collaboration is not going to happen. This reinforces what we've firmly believed - that there is a huge opportunity on the Wii and the DS to get some breakout hits, especially exploiting our intellectual properties. We're not going to be shifting our focus any, though. We're still going to be focusing on hardcore games on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, too, and really all kinds of stuff on Wii."

sega loves to contradict itself :?

I feel the same as you except I feel this way about the PS3. Will I can't say its the single worst thing to ever happen but, it has 1-2 games that I want and for the price of the console its just not worth it.

I wouldn't trust a thing sega says. Most of what they release is garbage. I'm not too sure Sega has thier finger on the pulse of what gamwers want. Maybe if they released a few more good games I'd believe them.
