Sequels that never lived up to original!

Reading the topic about better sequels got me thinking of sequels to great games that failed to live up to the original's orpredecessor'squality, i'll start with a few of mine:

Fifa Soccer (95)(Mega Drive) > Every other Fifa Soccer game since

Quake > Quake 2

Halo > Halo 2

Sensible World of Soccer > Sensible soccer 3D

Cannon Fodder > Cannon Fodder 2

Chaos Engine > Chaos Engine 2

Got loads of others but that will do for now!

Oh and:

GTA > GTA2

Red faction 2.... :( hopefully the third one will be better.

Since were talking about sequals... where in Gods name is FREEDON FIGHTERS 2... :cry:

Metal Gear Solid > Sons of Liberty.
Halo: Combat Evolved > Halo 2.

this was the biggest letdown

I expect a hundred Halo replies.

Honestly though in most cases the sequel doesn't match the hype, whether its a game or a film (please note that I'm not saying all are like this just most)

Quake > every Quake thereafter

Deus Ex > Deus Ex 2

Mario 64 > Mario Sunshine

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time > Warrior Within

KOTOR > KOTOR 2

Ocarina of Time > Majora's Mask

FFX > FFX-2

Gex > Gex 64

Devil May Cry > Devil May Cry 2

* > Bomberman: Act Zero

Deus Ex: Invisible War was a huge letdown.

Unreal II: The Awakening was probably the biggest dissappointment I've ever had in a game in my entire life. Definetly did not live up to Unreal.

Unreal Tournament 2003 was also pretty weak in comparison to Unreal Tournament.

Ikaruga was also pretty meh in comparison to Radiant Silvergun.

Halo > Halo 2
Red Faction > Red Faction 2
Xenosaga > Xenosaga II
Dino Crisis > Dino Crisis 2&3
Final Fantasy X > FFX-2
TS&TD > Command & Conquer: TW

Ah, if only a sequel would come that has just as awesome of a story as the original AND even more awesome gameplay than the original (plus augs that are more fun!).

Two that instantly come to mind based on how much I loved the originals are Devil May Cry 2 and Unreal Tournament 2003

Halo > Halo 2

Devil May Cry 2 > Devil May Cry 3

PGR2 > PGR3

I distinctly remember even though I was young, at the time I played SMB2 even then I was like "wtf, this isn't Mario."

I would disagree with these - the sequels are all different from their predecessors, and the settings/storylines are arguably weaker, but the gameplay is much better in each.

Anyway, I'll mention the obvious one: Oblivion!

Red Faction> Red Faction 2...Two was good and fun but they changed the story and setting, thus killing the original.

Quake>all other quakes afterwards. Again they changed the setting and art style ugh. That and UT came along and killed quake. id has been eaten epic's dust ever since.

halo 2 was FAR better than halo 1

halo 3, on the other hand, is balls compared to halo 2
