Serious question: What does the 'U' in Wii-U stand for?

But seriously, does anyone know? I'm not sure if Nintendo has even addressed this.Not that it's important or anything, but it seems like they didn't put much thought towards naming their console.

Wii was me and you (we). U is now a focus solely on you. That is what was said at last year's E3 anyway. Looks like they might change the name at this year's E3 though.

Someone needs to explain what the wii in wiiu stands for before the u.

In short the while the Wii was meant to bring everyone together in a casual atmosphere playing the same games...the Wii U is supposed to focus on its older fanbase by directing their games at the individual and mostly the action/adventure gamer.

If I remember correctly Nintendo said at E3 that the Wii was about 'we' and about us having fun with friends and family even if they weren't gamers before. FOr the Wii U Nintendo wanted to make the console for "we" and "you" and they were so sure of it they incuded "U" in its name.

It was explained that it was to represent the collective "you," or all the people who will use the console. Recently, Nintendo talked about renaming it due to the confusion over the E3 2011 press release. Keep up with the times man. You probably could have read about this on Wikipedia.foxhound_fox

It not only means "you", but it's also a metaphor for "university". Non-gamers and casuals that started out on Wii have graduated gaming high school and can now attend Wii U.

That's what the console itself told me.

From the E3 2011 conference, it was essentially a play on words to tell hardcores that it's not about the games we (Wii) want, but the games you (U) want. Yeah, kinda hokey, but whatev. Rumor is though they're going to change the name which, IMO, is a very smart move.

Wii = We (everyone, all inclusive)

U = You (specifically)

The WiiU is intended for everyone (so was the Wii but in reality it seems it lost a lot of the core gaming audience); that's all the casuals and family gamers, which flocked to the Wii in droves, and now Nintendo is hoping to get YOU, the core gamer, back too.

Really not that complicated.
