the highlighted isn't quite true. look at the chronicles of riddick. also, all 3 console makers (except nintendo this gen) market the latest console by showing off the new graphics first, then they talk about new features and hardware.
Graphics is what many companies use to show off a system, but not want changed the games. Every gen we have had advancements on how we play the games though controller changes and overall power of the console. Before Natal, Wiimote and Sony's motion controller we had not really moved forward towards more interactive gaming. The say we played the game had not changed. Look at Halo which besides the graphics played the same way Halo 2 played. That is not to say Halo 3 is a bad game, but past graphics you could almost play the same game on the Xbox. the gameplay really hasn't changed from generation to generation because the devs would rather up the graphics rather than doing anything interesting or innovative. graphics are also the easiest thing to change. some devs nowadays are starting to change the core gameplay, not through controllers or cameras, but rather through the games interactions. things like destructible environments, though they've been around since last gen, are getting more of a push like what is seen in battlefield bad company, and the force unleashed. more devs are going more indepth and are making more realistic physics calculations in games. weather and lighting are becoming more dynamic, and in the case of alan wake, both play a major role in the actual gameplay, not just making the game look different.
if the devs prefer to focus on using different types of controls or cameras rather than changing the core gameplay, then were stuck in the same boat. better graphics with 20 year old gameplay, just with different controls.
