I think its quite crazy, Ive never had to update the firmware on anything for my pc. Updating firmware for a gaming console is a terrible idea.
Jachael
A firmware update for a console is the same as a patch for your OS. Think before you speak.
no, a firmware update would be like flashing the bios. Or updating the firmware of a video card or other device, except people dont update firmware they just download and install patches and drivers etc...There is a huge difference, a firmware update can completely brick a device. You are rewritting the software of the device, not the os.

What I'm saying is that a Firmware update on a console isn't the same as a firmware update on a PC. The firmware on a console is the OS of the console. Firmware really is a loose term for a console.
With the way SONY is always messing with the PS3s firmware update i hope someday SONY will not send a VIRUS as a firmware update CRASH all the PS3s.

Great post. Will read again.
I hope its not because of this place, SW is a small community and there opinions do not reflect the gaming community. SW seems to be full of young teenage boys, There are a ton of 25 and up gamers out there that are not so close minded.I'm losing my faith in the gaming community everday but you don't see me making threads about it.

[QUOTE="linkin_guy109"]But at least SONY should stop forcing mandatory updates to gamers because it is realy annoying when someone is realy in a high mood to play a game & the next thing a mandatory UPDATE pops up.Most of the updates are not even realy important to some people hence they'll still get a HDD error for stupid updates. OH NOSES Sony is making me download a free update to make my system run better...................................... How Dare They!!!!!!!!!!so now sony caring about there console by release firmware for it is a bad thing? :S they may hurt a few ps3s with an update but no firmware is perfect

[QUOTE="WilliamRLBaker"] lol yep because 2.5mbps is insanely slow...but Im not surprised to see you defending the worst of ps3 problems. heres a link for ya. http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-Network/Slow-downloads-Try-using-a-Local-Proxy-to-speed-up-downloads-Esp/m-p/37209641
""Slow downloads from PSN are a popular topic these days. My service is through Comcast, I think 12 Mbps as my desktop computer can pull about 1.4 MBps. The PS3, with default connection settings (no proxy) only manages *maybe* 100 KBps when downloading from the store.""
the fact you have to set up a proxy because of Ps3 problems, and the locations of playstation 3 servers for store content aren't very well established around the world is just freaking sad.
P.S: I think you got it wrong, his connection isn't 2.5mbps, the ps3 is only downloading at 2.5mbps.
""The file is 131MB in size. I can't download it in the background, and it takes seven minutes to complete. That means my data speed is 2.5Mbps, which seems about right for the slow-as-dirt PlayStation 3 downloads. Then it has to install, and the game reboots.""he is doing the math that a 131MB file takes 7 minutes to complete, means the ps3 is only downloading at 2.5mbps.

Don't know what to tell you. I get great speeds on psn, so I'm going to say ignorance of how to set up a network is likely to blame. It sucks, but that's the way networks work. I've heard of people getting good speeds on psn and bad speeds on 360, it's all how the network is set up.
Its a bit strange though, don't these things auto set-up? 360 isn't perfect either, while mine is fast and within tolerence, it's still not as fast as my computer. It would bother me, but on the 360 you can just download and do other things at the same time.
Auto set up is an option, but not the best one. There are too many different types of routers and ISPs for auto to be the best option every time. I have my ps3 with a static IP, and the QoS set for that ethernet port. I also have that IP DMZ'd, but am not sure if that actually matters since the ps3 is wired from the router.
I never had a wireless network before I got a ps3, so I had to learn all this as I went, but I figured it out pretty quickly, most people will just do auto and think it's enough, but those people have no place to be talking about speeds they get if they don't take the time to optimize their networks.

He is blaming Sony for slow download speeds when he only has a " 2.5Mbps" connection?
....this thread...
lol.. my internet connection's speed is 2MB and it works like a charm.. and my ps3 downloads games fast too. sometimes faster than the computer... lol lol
