I just got the latest edition of Official Playstation Mag UK, and when I got to the reviews section, I found something that horrified me. They did - they gave Heavenly Sword a 7.

Now, I don't blame the magazine here, that's not what this topic's about. What I want to know is, after five years in development, FIVE ****ING YEARS, how the heck did it get a 7? According to OPM, it took them 5 and a half hours to complete. How does a developer actually manage to make an hour and six minutes of gameplay a YEAR? HOW DID THEY DO IT???? This shouldn't be possible, I just don't understand.

Don't post fanboy comments, please, like "It's the CELL and the PS3 being hard to develop for", because it isn't. How else would Ubisoft say that the CELL isn't any harder, and how else would we get games like Motorstorm and Resistance if far, far less than 5 years? No, it's just beyond me how they managed.

OPM also gave Lair a 6, which actually seems pretty unfair, if you read the review. But on a brighter note, they gave Warhawk a 9 and Singstar PS3 a 9 as well, so it wasn't all depressing reading.

And if you're interested, Stranglehold got an 8. It's supposed to be the world's first review or something.

The graphical detail in the game is amazing, and the actors, I would assume thats why it took so long ... as gameplay goes though ... short and repetitive.

They must've been twiddling their thumbs for 4 years and then decided to finally start making the game. To top all of this off, Heavenly Sword has no multiplayer. So what you get is a 6hour button mashing game with no multiplayer...that is flat out robbery.

READ THE ORIGINAL POST!!! ALL OF IT!!! I said specifically that I didn't want Fanboys in here blaming the cell, as it isn't the CELL, it's the developers, if it was the CELL, then how would we get great games in short time? So please, no more ignorance and fanboys.

Who knows what going on with the Playstation mags, PSM gave Warhawk a 6.5 and it's a great game, maybe a little pricey for what you get but still that review was way off.

Stranglehold will be big fun though, I have played through the 360 demo about a dozen times so far.

Isn't it just. I mean, how can you use 5 years just making the animations, actors and cutscenes? It's absolutely crazy, and I was so looking forward to Heavenly Sword, I thought that IGN were being biased and anti-PS3, but I was wrong...

The only worse example is Mass Effect, that's been in development for 10 years, was originally on PS, then GC, the 360, so if that flops, then that's 10 years down the tiolet, which is even worse, but even so, 10 years for an AAA game still sems like a verrrrry long time.

The game was pretty much vaporware between 2003 and 2004. After the developer "Just Add Monters" had finished Kung Fu Chaos on the original Xbox, they were acquired by the studio "Ninja Theory". Ninja Theory had the ideas and artwork for Heavenly Sword, which they then took to Microsoft. Microsoft declined, so Ninja Theory went to Sony instead. Sony granted the game the green light and it became an exclusive to the PS3. This is why there's still a Heavenly Sword gamepage on TeamXbox, since it was once in development for the Xbox 360 too. Development only *properly* started in 2004, so it really took three years to develop, not five. Andy Serkis and Peter Jackson's WETA studio, both of LOTR and King Kong fame, also joined the project half-way through, which probably explains the game's delay.

In this case, that may be true. But to be honest, the gameplay is supposed to be good, it;s just the lenght and pacing of the game that are bad, it has too many clumps of the same thing, making it repetitive, apparently.

mattbbpl

All I know about Kameo was that it was on Xbox 1 at some point, but it could easily have been on N64. It's just that some developers are too ambitious for their own good. Lionhead are a good example, Black and White was not as good as promised, and Fable promised to have trees growing in real time, and actual choices between good and evil. Instead, all it had was 'do this person's bidding or kill them', and in the end, whether you were good or evil, you still had to kill the evil dude at the end. So, I'm not making excuses, but that was probably part of theproblem for Heavenly Sword.

It should have been a film, not a game.

Kameo went from N64 to CUbe to Xbox then finally to 360.

Ah, I probably am, but these things confuse me. I can never remember which is which, they're just both "360 games" in my head.

Well isn't it pretty obvious that blu-ray is too small? 6 hours is the most they could fit on the disc. DVD9 FTW.MrEpyx

What? No, it wasn't the disc space, they didn't use a dual layer Blu Ray disc, so they still had an extra 25 Gigabytes to toy around with, so that obviously wasn't the problem. In today's games ,though, DVD9 is too small, as HS would have had to been 3 DVD9's,like Blue Dragon, and nobody likes disc switching.

Another DVD9 woe. Rumour has it that the reason GTA4 was delayed is because it can't all fit on a DVD9, and M$ won't let it be multiple disc, for fear of their bversion being inferior to the PS3 version, so they're holding up release until it can all fit on a DVD9. If it was the PS3 version, then Take Two would probably release the 360 version, as they would get more profit from that, and that would be a good marketing decision, but not such a good one if the PS3's was ready to go, as they wouldn't make as much money, and I'm sure they're contractually obliged to release M$'s first or at the same time as Sony's.

Yes, it may well be too human, but still, even with two other games released, then it's still a very long time, is 10 years. Insomniac have been doing almost annual releases of games, since the first Ratchet, and they have all been extremely high quality, using their own developed engines and everything, so 2 and a bit games in 10 years is still not impressive.

Long development time doesn't guarantee a good game, if its a bad developer making the game, you could give them 10 years and the game would suck.

Yeah, I am an angry Cow, but if I ignored all the reviews that I didn't like, then I would be left with Play's 10/10 review, and that other 9/10 one, so I can't just pretend that the reviews neverexisted, that would be a bit childish.

True its been in development for 5 years but its only being developed for PS3 for half the time. The game was originally set to release on Xbox/PS2 but then they realized they need more hardware and then they decided to scratch that and make the game for PS3. They said it in a blog (maybe not exactly like that but something close). Development for 5 years?Yeah. Developed on PS3 for 5 years? No

Developing for PS3 is a living hell developers are forced into dealing with. Even these first party titles with the full force of Sony's financial muscle are cranking out substandard garbage. "Buh teh Cell is stil teh best" give it up already. Its garbage designed to be used as a server for high def video.

[QUOTE="HarlockJC"]You know all these major hits that I was looking forward to are all just turning into crap...what is going onShmenonPie

Well, Warhawk and Singstar are good, they got high scores, but HS and Lair are flops. Yes, Lems, I said it, Heavenly Sword and Lair are FLOPS!!!!!

They must've been twiddling their thumbs for 4 years and then decided to finally start making the game. To top all of this off, Heavenly Sword has no multiplayer. So what you get is a 6hour button mashing game with no multiplayer...that is flat out robbery.

That's not Mass Effect, that's Too Human.

Well it's hardly a catastrophe, the game is obviously meant to be a movie like experience, and many games these days are less than 9 hours long. Halo SP took me about 7 hours and Gears is prolly about as long, okay, they have online. But Riddick was short as hell too, and Fable wasn't too long either. Ok, HS is still a few hours shorter, but I still think people are overreacting. If I had a PS3 I'd get the game and play it through couple of times and most likely enjoy it, I sorta like short games since I have a tendency not to finish the longer ones...

because they worried about sound effects, and voice acting way to much instead of simple things like how rewarding the game is going to be after ur done with it

EGM gave it an 8, an 8, and a 9.

GameInformer gave it an 8.75. Aren't these reviews just as valid? Why take the low onesas the standard?

GI also said the combat was very satisfying and fun. moments like headshotting soldiers with a crossbow are some of the best moments of 07 gaming.

Well it has to... Bioshock had its own water team... HS has its own hair team...

Yes, but Bioshock takes place under water; Heavenly Sword does not take place inside of a hair salon.
