I used to wonder what the hype of this game is all about. Why cows would hype this game. I didn't think it looked good at all to me. However, that changed recently, when I saw the game videos from E3, and I realized just why they were hyping this.
It looks like a very fun platformer. Sure, a lot of the levels might end up sucking, due to lack of imagination by the people who create levels, but I've seen some levels that looked like a lot of fun. And it seems like it will have a variety of levels, whether the focus is on the co-op aspect of the game, with just messing around with friends, some which have some puzzle elements in the game, some which are more focused on simple platforming, and even racing. Hell, one person in this thread posted a video of a simple mini-game where you have to collect the most bubbles, while avoiding some fire logs, which might not be the best level ever (even in this game), but could end up being a nice distraction while playing with some friends.
Then there's the co-op, which is a nice mixture of actually cooperating and competition. You rely on your friends to help you out in the levels, and are basically going through the level together, but at the same time, you can have competitions to see who can collect the most of those bubbles (we've already seen that one mini-game based on this, I can imagine some other better levels based on this aspect as well), racing, and some other possibilities.
Then there's the level creator. Sure, this has been done before. But it does add a lot to this game, and possibly the best thing about it for many people. For one thing, it can give creative people something to do outside of the platforming, and showing off their skills as a level designer. It can also add a lot of replayability. Not everybody will end up using this part of the game, but almost everybody will end up benefiting from it, due to the limitless number of levels that they can play. This could be a bit flawed if not done right, either making it too complicated, or making it too basic, but from what I've seen of the level creator, it is done extremely well, so that it's easy to use, gives you incentive to play through the actual game to unlock some features for it, and not being too restrictive. And if you aren't satisfied with a specific part of the level while actually playing through it, you can edit it on the spot, without having to switch to a different mode in the game, making it quick and accessible to many people.
Could it flop? Of course it could. Any game could. Does it look shallow? Sometimes, but again it depends on the creator of the level. Some of the levels look very fun to play through, and not shallow at all. At least that's my opinion on what I've seen so far, and I don't even have a PS3. But this is one game that might push me towards getting one, at least eventually. But obviously it's not for everybody. No game is, and if it's not your kind of game, then that's fine. I just love the idea of it.
