[QUOTE="princeofshapeir"]

why in dawkin's name would anyone pay $99 up front and agree to a $15/month 2-year contract for a seven-year-old console

$459 down the drain

santoron

Why would anybody agree to a contract phone? Convenience/Low upfront costs.

The difference being that most people are paying the same phone bill whether they're getting a subsidized phone or not. My contract expired almost a year ago, and my bill didn't magically lower since I elected to keep my current phone for the time being. Paying a super inflated live price for 2 years is a whole different matter.

Exactly hell buying an iphone 4S without a contract is like $600 dollars.

it won't work for consoles. cell phones are now a part of everyday life and a necessity in the modern world. consoles are not, and thus contracts will not be more enticing than the upfront costprinceofshapeir

I agree that consoles are less important in terms of everyday life, but, as we have seen, entertainment is an important factor in an individual's life. The price plan is applicable across multiple models. In essence, console sales (via this plan) will essentially be less, as opposed to smartphone sales.

I don't know why anyone would think this is a good deal, this is bad news though. If this succeeds you can bet MS will implement this in their next Xbox as the only pay option, and Lems would eat it up too.

They migth say "people won't defend it, they are smarter" well people defend paying for online gaming and they even defended it again when they raised the price of XBL (which they will no doubt raise again in the future, they will no doubt bend over and defend this.

This is just the test run, if it takes off you will see it implemented in the next system. And you Lems only have yourselves to blame for it when it happens.

Most people will not go for this, phones are something different and way more expensive than a 360,which you can now buy with kinect for $299 cheap bundle.

You mean my Galaxy 2,which runs an open OS that has a dual core CPU and more ram than the xbox 360,can video chat, play games cheaper, online free, can make calls, use GPU to find locations,is portable and allow me to even download movies or series without even needing to have netflix is a waste.?tormentos

Did I state that "tormentos will find a smartphone on a 3 year plan to be a waste"? Not only is your argument innaccurate, but it is stupid. STFU and go to your corner.

the thing is almost 7 years old it should just be $99 straight up at this point.

ugh, the 360s popularity stinks.

i thought i was just going to blow through another 5 year gen not get married and die of old age with the same system.

nice job cows, your superpowers of being incredibly wrong about things worked so well that you have made the 360 last forever.

I don't understand (largely because i'm drunk), but are you saying that Live prices won't deflate at the end of the term? Monthly fees are obviously inflated to cover the cost of the phone (which makes sense). I can't comment on whether prices will deflate (though I assume you could cancel at the end of the term, and simply re-up to a regular priced Live).

That's what you would like to think, but I don't think the average consumer is very intelligent. Especially the gaming one, they put up with crap that no other consumer market would accept.

People said the same thing about XBL, they said no one would be dumb enough to pay for online gaming, and look what happened? They even defended it when they raised the price. People will flock to this like idiots as well no doubt.

MS preying on the ill informed?? OMG my kid has wanted an Xbox forever $99 with Kinect I'm sold!!!! What $15 a month charge for two years wtf!!!! Either that or it'll cater to the type that can't afford it like loan stores or cash advance do. I think it'll prolly do great in NA. People are dumb and think small initial price with getting nickeled and dimed over time for more is better than a larger upfront cost.

$460 Xbox, and the sh!tty one too.

Plus a $250 early termination fee.

What a good deal....FOR MORONS!

Keep convincing yourselves that this is a good deal. MS has you douchbags brainwashed so bad it is pathetic.

This is so funny. I knew the idiots would come out in droves to defend this typical Microsoft prison rape tactic.

You have to give it to M$ to introduce this type of shady deals in the industry. This company is going to transform the whole market into crap like the cellphone market where the consumer has to resign himself into getting the least ripping off deal and sometimes not even that. This is what I feared the first time I saw M$ entering this industry, they are the worst company to have as a competitor.

One of the few times i agree with you,but if you analyze it MS took it even further, the xbox 360 will be 7 year old this holiday, and the sooner i think will see a successor will be next year, that would be 8 years after the 360 landed, the PS2 was release almost 6 years after the PS1,from holiday 1994 in japan to march 2000 in japan, little over 5 years, the PS3 arrived in Japan in holiday 2006 little over six years after the PS2. The 360 i think already pass the PS2 time frame without a successor.

This is why this kind of deals are close to a scam. Many people are led by this kind of misleading propaganda. Sure people are dumb for not realising but companies take advantage of how dumb people are. If enough amount of dumb people fall for it them it starts to become a standard in the industry and everyone ends screwed.

The point I was making is that Monthly phone bills aren't raised if you get a new phone from your service provider, you pay the same price for your services whether you buy a phone outright or get one subsidized from them. The only advantage of paying full retail for your phone is if you plan on switching providers before a 2 year contract term expires, so it makes financial sense to get a phone on the cheap for most people. The Xbox deal is more like home shopping network, or rent to own stores. You're paying a smaller price up front, but end up paying much more than if you bought from a regular retailer.

i do the same thing every gen so even though old consoles dribble out a few games after they hit 5 years old i am mostly tired of them and have seen basically everything they are capable of and quit buying games and begin to sock away money for the upcomming system.

i'm kinda sick of the consoles at this point hell at this point i hardly even see the games anymore.

all i see is all the middleware and crap that makes them.

a new game trailer releases and i'm sitting there saying to myself. "ho-hum another unreal engine, phys-x, renderware, ect ect ect... yawn."

Also, considering this is clearly a market test and only available in the 16 Microsoft stores across the United States, I'd say that the fearmongering in here about "everyone being screwed" is a tad rushed.

Very true. I can only assume that the monthly prices remain consistently increased, or the initial phone prices allow a regular phone plan to cover the cost of giving the phone out on contract.

I doubt hte service providers are giving phones out at cost. It's reasonable to assume that their services (i.e. Data, Minutes, Messages) are severely overpriced.

this is dumb. I really hope it fails. $15 a month for live and a 2 year contract? Ripoff mems_1224
its not a ripoff for people that can't afford a $300 bundle with kinect... the whole point of this is to bring it to people that couldn't normally afford it but pay interest basically by not paying for it all up front. You could probably do the same thing with a credit card and pay $15 a month...

How is it misleading propaganda...? Because it's a contract that adds up to more than an upfront price? That's not misleading nor propaganda...

Not to beat a dead horse, but...

Xbox 360/4GB/Kinect/Kinect Sports/Kinect Adventures/3 Months of X-Box Live: $299.99

12 Month X-Box Live Subscription: $48.41 x 2: $96.82

Total: $396.81

Not only do you get get everything Microsoft is offering for $62.19 cheaper, but you also get an extra three months of X-Box Live, and two Kinect games to play. I really do not understand the point of Microsoft's bundle: not only is it rediciously expensive for a console that is seven years old and on its death bed, (hell even $300 for an X-Box with Kinect is rediculously overpriced it should be no more than $200 with Kinect or $100 without it), but if a lower income family cannot afford an X-Box 360 at the moment or after a few months of saving to the point where this bundle might be worth it, they probably could not afford any games. If you want an X-Box 360 THAT baddly this late in the generation, buy one used for far less money or just save your money for the X-Box Next, as by time it comes out you will have plenty of money to afford it day one, and it will likely be backwards compatable with Xbox 360 games and Kinect.

Also, considering this is clearly a market test and only available in the 16 Microsoft stores across the United States, I'd say that the fearmongering in here about "everyone being screwed" is a tad rushed.Ravensmash

[QUOTE="Ravensmash"][QUOTE="kuraimen"][QUOTE="WilliamRLBaker"] *laughs* you mean like in the UK where companies like apple get past often mandatory 2 year warranty terms? and lemon laws? Please dont act like america is the only one.

I'm not saying they're the only place but the US is one of the countries more permissive in misleading propaganda.

How is it misleading propaganda...? Because it's a contract that adds up to more than an upfront price? That's not misleading nor propaganda...

It's the same with cigarettes for example. Why do you think they require cigarette companies to put all the harmful things with big letters and pictures on many countries instead of having them on fine print or why they no longer let them make commercials with young healthy people. People usually don't read the fine print so someone putting a big juicy announcement and then basically nullifying it on the fine print is trying to intentionally mislead people. Even with contracts that's well known to the point where many contracts in several countries can't use fine print to write key stuff that is considered misleading.

nothing its a good deal, 99 upfront, you dont pay taxes like u would on a retail purchase, you get a 2 year warranty built in, and its 15 dollars month for 24 months i believe without interest. Cows are a little nervous, SOny will probably be doing the same thing, but then everyone will love it and its great since this place is infested with pathetic last place loser cows. and oh yeah delusional hermits as well, DEAL WITH IT

Microsoft should have had it at $15 with a 3 year subscription. That would have been great.

ShadowMoses900

you know someone is stupid when they try and say that Microsoft will use this method as their only option. I mean cows fear mongering is pathetic as tripping an old lady with a cane

Not really. It is just like a lot of other things. Could you get it cheaper by paying the entire cost up front? Sure, but you pay a little more for the convenience of being able to pay it all off over time.

It is basically a loan program.

the point is to get people to buy it for cheaper while giving MS more money in the long run. If you don't know any better, it's a good deal.

It is pretty impressive that you can ignore your own hypocrisy on a daily basis. You are the poster boy of fear mongering against Sony.
