GOW is entertaining but it has its flaws and they are clearly visible, GOW does right is being a good game which is why it scores well,

NNN2 isnt a good game its not just the mechanics its just a BAD game so thats a really bad example.

Wiimotefan

I just finished playing the first one and I've gotta agree with you, it has a lot of flaws. The QTE events would just pop out of nowhere and I wouldn't be ready for them/they wouldn't work for the joystick ones sometimes. Also, the platforming was very frustrating sometimes, especially the spinning knife towers at the end...*shudders at the thought of them* Also, it felt like a button smasher often with large groups with enemies. Other than those flaws, it was decent, but definitely overrated IMO. Devil May Cry 1/3 are much better hack 'n slashers.

Yeah, button mashing in a hack and slash is really unacceptable these days. Ninja Gaiden and DMC did it right years ago, so I dont see why they cant up the AI and add a bit of strictness to the timing in GoWs combat. Especially when combat is the main focus of the game.

God of war has tight and responsive controls for a hack n slash, I mean you guys are nitpicking which is fine but at the end of the day its a damn good and fun series. Especially since god of war basically changed the way hack n slash are made and inspired lots of devs and games.

[QUOTE="Chris_Williams"] God of War level design keeps it engaging and fresh if it was repetitive and pointless it would score what ninety nine nights 2 scored here"which is also a hack n slash" . Chris_Williams

and what game doesn't have flaws?

i was debating about why GOW scores well and NNN2 didnt and thats because GOW is actually a good game. and NNN2 is in fact a very terrible one. theres nothing good about that game actually.

every game has flaws you are correct, the only game i played thats near flawless in its genre was SMG

For sure. I loved DMC because it was a lot more challenging and really made dodging attacks and knowing exactly when to attack necessary to win fights. I haven't played Ninja Gaiden but I'm sure it has extremely similar mechanics to DMC.

Do you mean by QTE's and set pieces? Neither of those do anything for me, or anything to enhance the gameplay. In many cases they detract from the experience imo.

And I don't feel I'm being nit picky. I know a lot of gamers like to say it, but I truly find gameplay to be the most important aspect of a game and in that sense GoW is very lacking.

Its not a terrible game. I just find its a bit below average for its genre. I really dig the production values, but the core gameplay doesnt do anything for me.

Oh man NG is great... just not the latest one apparently. DMC is more free form, while NG is more about trying to survive. Both are similar in that you really have to know what moves match what situation and think on your toes very quickly about it.

Really man, if you like DMC you should really try out a Gaiden. Ninja Gaiden Black is about as close to perfection as they got. Ninja Gaiden Sigma (a remake of black) and Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 (a remake of 2) are also on point.

Ninja Gaiden 2 is nice as well, probably the most rewarding combat in a hack and slash game, but the rest of the game was riddled with imbalance, 'cheap' difficulty and some sketchy performance.

I think Sony will end up making multiplats for Nintendo and MS consoles and PC before Miyamoto jumps ship to work with a competitor with an uncertain future.

Most games are repetitive to an extent. You're almost always depending on the same mechanics. It comes down to how the developers choose intertwine said mechanics into the game via level design, enemy AI, objective, etc...

In Mario games for example, you are basically doing the same things the whole time, but the level designs do an excellent job at keeping things engaging and fresh.

Wiimotefan

The same goes for god of war.. the level design and pacing are several of the better things about the games...

I don't have an Xbox/Xbox 360/PS3 and have no intentions on getting any of them so I can't really play them, but I was thinking about trying out the old ones on the NES sometime. Just not anytime soon, I'm not in the mood for a frustrating game :P

They can be frustrating. New age NG is incredibly challenging, but fair. You can get through just about every scenario without taking a hit, but it requires some real skill.

Old NG is just plain hard. If you do play one of the NES titles, I recommend Ninja Gaiden 2: Dark Sword of Chaos. The original is good as well. Ninja Gaiden 3 NES is a dog turd and just incredibly cheap... it seems us Ninja Gaiden fans just cant get a good Ninja Gaiden 3. :(

Yeah, I watched the Angry Video Game Nerd's reviews of them and they look really fun to play, but hard as hell. I've beaten Zelda II and the Mega Mans, so I'd definitely be up for the challenge. I'm not sure how much easier they are than NG though...

[QUOTE="Second_Hokage"]Its the most powerful console atm, and with Mr. Miyamoto building his legendary gaming franchises from the ground up on PS3, they would be the greatest games of all time! Imagine a Zelda game with the graphics and set pieces of God of War 3! That is what a zelda game should be like right now, but Nintendo just wants to release colorful rainbow type games. Just imagine it! A westernized Shigeru Miyamoto working with SONY!

Well, that same Zelda formula has kept it going for...what is it,37 or so years now?I doubt PS3 will be able to do anything for Zelda besides mark him as an ignoble bloodlusting elf.with a shotgun.and a potty mouth.besides, there's bound to be a Zelda game in the Wii U's lifespan,so why make it for Ps3?...

Oh honestly I'd say Megaman is right there with 'em. People tend to exaggerate the difficulty of NG games. I beat NG2 NES the first evening I got it when I was 9 years old lol. They aren't that bad.

Ninja Gaiden 1 is frustrating cause if you lose to the last boss you get knocked back two levels... and I think they limit you on continues. Ninja Gaiden 2 is pretty fair though. Ninja Gaiden 3 as I said is just plain cheap. Not challenging, not fun, just cheap.

I haven't played 3 but I'd argue Gaiden 2 was not near as balanced as the first game, the spam explosive kunai are a bit annoying in some of the areas.

I don't think the AVGN was exaggerating the difficulty at all though :P...but seriously, yeah I'll put the first two on my retro backlog when I'm in for a good challenge.
