I find it funny how you think GTA V will outsell CoD to easily when CoD is... CoD.

Unless the sequel to Black Ops turns out to be absolutely crap (and trust me, with Treyarch, it won't), there's no way GTA V will "smash" CoD. It might outsell it, but it's going to be a tough fight for sure.

Both will be 20 million+ sellers anyway.

WickoSicko

Well if you told people that GTA IV would be outsold by some FPS game, they probably would have had the same reaction.

Honestly, I don't see either smashing the other in sales, but not everyone is a huge online FPS fan, some people just like fun experiences they can rely on. GTA V can outsell CoD, and I don't see why the logic of "its CoD" is reason enough for it to not do so.

I mean GTA is... GTA.

And Cod is... CoD. CoD is the GTA of this generation.

GTA was last generation's big phenomenon of the gaming industry.

I guess you are forgetting the part where they broke records this gen too? Had the highest critical acclaim of any game this gen? Highest sales of any hardcore game this gen up until MW2?

Kind of a narrow viewpoint. CoD is successful, sure, but its not the ONLY game series in the world, and gamers tastes move damn quick.

Sure CoD might outsell it, but its not a given, regardless of what you think, and you saying CoD won't be beat around the time we'd normally be into a new generation is a bit silly. Its like being shocked a movie like Titanic could make more money then Star Wars because it isn't Star Wars and Star Wars is the blah blah blah of the century or whatever.

[QUOTE="eboyishere"]GTA5 is a big name.....even with casuals...I think people are seriously underestimating the series.burgeg

It is, but CoD is simply bigger, sells faster, and will most likely be released on more platforms.

Is it bigger though? Does it really sell faster? Because the last time I checked, the last time a main GTA was released in the same year as a main COD, GTA outsold it. And that was against World at War, so COD had already gone in to super sales mode by that point. As the userbase of this generation of consoles grow, sales increase. That's the reason the latest COD games outsold GTA IV. It's the reason GTA V sales will blow GTA IV's sales out of the water. And it's the reason I believe GTA will retake the sales crown this year. I think it's going to be a close and tough battle between both games for sure, but in the end I expect GTA to be the victor.

YOU'RE KIDDING YOURSELF if you think the two games will sell remotely close to each other. Treyarch's COD will outselff GTA 5 by 2 fold. just stop man:lol: you know its true.

They have a better chance beating a treyarch game then a IW one. but still thats a stretch.

I'm gonna laugh so hard when GTA V does end up outselling it. You do realise GTA IV broke sales records when it came out, right? You've got to be VERY ignorant if you think COD is going to "destroy" it in sales. Expecting it to outsell GTA V is one thing, but expecting GTA to not even come close? Beyond ignorant. Again, the last time a GTA and COD were released in the same year GTA outsold it. To outright dismiss GTA's chances of outselling COD is not smart.

Yeah, exactly. It came out a year after 4 was HUGE, and the CoD series went into an upwards spiral of hype and sales.

Plus, there are a LOT of things giving it an edge. Its not in the same genre as Call of Duty, so it has the advantage of taking non FPS fans into account, the series is just as well known (if not moreso) then the Call of Duty series, the series has gone up in sales with every core iteration, and the series is celebrated by journalists and gamers in a way CoD isn't.

GTA has a lot going for it, its got a big past behind it, and I can't see the argument that "its CoD" is a reason it doesn't outsell it when its flipping GTA, a game with more history and money behind it then CoD.

If CoD outsells it I won't be too surprised, but I will be if its more then like a couple million, and if GTA V outsells it I equally will not be surprised. Both are big games, but I personally think of any game, GTA V is the one to outsell CoD, and you can't really say I'm wrong when both games are kind of off the horizon right now.

A lot has changed from WaW to were the COD franchise is at now. That is what you're refusing to acknowledge. what will help GTA narrow the gap though, is it being released on the WiiU.

GTA4 broke sales records prior to MW2, but after that, CoD broke entertainment records 3 years in a row. That's saying something. GTA is not a phenomenon anymore, just a very big series.

So by that logic, GTA should have always been a phenomenon after the first time right?

CoD WAS a phenomenon, but that doesn't last forever. People have repeated it time and time again, but the series isn't going to get bigger forever, especially at the lack of change and quality its representing with each new title compared to the last.

Eventually, like with GTA, CoD will stop being a phenomenon too. You can't have a double standard and say "oh yeah, GTA stopped being one but CoD will always be one", because you don't give reasoning to that and the truth is that before MW2 was when the series was at its best and the success came more as a result of its familiarity and the hype from before, so really I think GTA V can outsell CoD very, very easily and its impossible to really say it won't unless the next CoD comes with some given sell tactic to beat out its closest selling runner up, like free oral sex with every copy or something.

GTA V is set to absolutely destroy GTA IV sales thanks to a much bigger userbase.

But it IS fun! why is it so hard for some people to get that? :P i have bought every single CoD game after CoD4 and have enjoyed them all. when you see someone with over 30 days of playtime with a game its not because their being forced or been "brainwashed" to play it, its because the game is pure fun and addicting to play online especially with friends. i will buy black ops 2 or whatever CoD coming out this year because i want to, because i know it will be as fun as the other CoD games. just sayin :P

Wasdie

If you know that you will enjoy it as musch as the other CoD-games, then what's the point in buying a new game that you won't enjoy more than the last one?

Because unlike PC games, console gamers never stick to one game for years. Communities always move to the newest one. It's like Madden, while it's nothing new each year, you can't settle for last years rosters, you need an update. A $60 update to play the same core game you've been playing for decades.

Sad, but true.

Call of Duty broke records 3 years in a row, but people forget this was 3 years where we didn't have a damn GTA game to pit against CoD in the sales game. Just DLC and Chinatown wars.

I think this is the main thing we should be talking about. For the last few years COD hasn't had competition from a game as huge as GTA. The super mass appeal of COD has gone uncontested since MW2. There's been no super huge mass appealing release like GTA for it to compete with. For once COD will actually be competing with a game of a similar level of popularity. If they release at around the same time, which they probably will, it's going to be a real dogfight in sales between these two massive games. COD certainly isn't going to get all its own way this year like it has in previous years.

I thought it was around 23 million myself. I expect it to sell a few million more at the very least. Depends on your perception of "destroy". Perhaps that was the wrong word to use. It will certainly best GTA IV sales by a few million at the very least. It should sell the same kind of numbers COD does these days.

I thought it was around 23 million myself. I expect it to sell a few million more at the very least. Depends on your perception of "destroy". Perhaps that was the wrong word to use. It will certainly best GTA IV sales by a few million at the very least. It should sell the same kind of numbers COD does these days.

How can you be sure of that?

Nobody can be certain of anything. It's an educated guess. The userbase of the current gen consoles is much bigger than it was when GTA IV came out, therefore it's a good enough guess that the sales will increase accordingly. Just like how the sales with each COD game for the last few years have increased accordingly.

I think that like all recent GTA games, GTAV will sell in the region of 20 million.

But I am not sure it will top 3.6 million in 1 day, or 8.5 million after a month to be honest.

Yeah it is. People are consistently buying updated skins of the same exact multiplayer experiance for the past 5 years in a row and they do so happily. They don't buy anything else. It's like Activision has brainwashed them into thinking that CoD is the only way to have fun, that no other game experiance is fun.

Wasdie

But it IS fun! why is it so hard for some people to get that? :P i have bought every single CoD game after CoD4 and have enjoyed them all. when you see someone with over 30 days of playtime with a game its not because their being forced or been "brainwashed" to play it, its because the game is pure fun and addicting to play online especially with friends. i will buy black ops 2 or whatever CoD coming out this year because i want to, because i know it will be as fun as the other CoD games. just sayin :P

Red Orchestra 2 implemented a CoD style leveling and unlock system that unbalances the game and plays no real point all to appeal to the CoD audience

Why did they try to appeal to the CoD players? RO is anything but appealing to the CoD people.

GTA5 sure wont get my money so they lost 1 copy :P. CoD day 1 like every year to be more on topic not even close! nothing beats the beast that is CoD

finalstar2007

FANBOY.

You prefer to spend 60$ on a game that is the same as the last year, with a sucky story, minor graphical improvements, 2 or 3 new weapons, a couple of remodeled maps and the same gameplay?

I prefer to spend 60$ on a game that features realism at the highest point, with brilliant gameplay and hopefully a better driving, a whole bunch of new features, graphics to put call of duty to shame............

Screw Call of Duty, that game ain't beast, that game is a big piece of repetition.

It's not shocking but I still think COD will outsell it, as huge as the GTA series is, it doesn't look like the COD series can be stopped.

If it doesn't appeal to you, don't buy it. Simple as that.

That's a definite possibility, heck it's the only game next year that ghas a shot at beating CoD in sales. Especially if it comes out for the Wii-U as well.

Let's not kid ourselves. COD will surpass all other's sales again just like it did last year, and the year before that, and the year before that. It is something that while some people hate, will just not go away. In fact it is GROWING. I am no fanboy, believe me, but I am just being realistic about it. Being an M+ title doesn't help GTA sales among minors either. Yes, I know that COD is M+ also, but parents seem to look the other way when it comes to warfare. Prostitutes and carjacking is a bit harder to sell on most parents.

Because it's CoD. that's where the majority of gamers are today. CoD has set the standards and if a game doesn't meet those standards it instantly fails.

That's the impact that CoD had. It's almost impossible to not see CoD's impact on this generation. It's all about marketing to a broader audience and it's pretty much killing unique games.

GTA V has a huge fanbase and has been around longer, there is no doubt IMO that it will outsell COD. But both games will sell well. I just hope that GTA V has multiplayer similar to RDR because I loved that game online!

That being said, I don't listen to analysts because they are almost alwyas full of sh!t

Doubt it. It'll sell bucketloads and the amount of hype behind it may be bigger, but COD will outsell it.

Grand Theft Auto's are always amazing games, plus they are huge and aren't released every year so there is even more hype. The gaming industry has grown explosively since 2007, but GTA still has selling appeal. This isn't a surprise. COD will sell well again obviously, but so will GTA V.

The ONLY GOOD RECENT CALL OF DUTY has been Call of Duty 4. The rest of them after that are literally just re-skinned games with literally additions to one or 2 of the features of the game. It's unbelievably boring now.

GTA will sell and threaten. But people love competition. There is no better instant gratification competition than cod mp. I'm not sure it will be outsold by GTA. It could be done by GTA, but I don't know. People love their cod.

Recently my casual MW friends who were MW fans opened there eyes, they got bored of the game and traded MW3 for BF3 I will not be shocked if GTA sells alot more the MW I can see the modern warfare trend decline.

GTA5 also being delayed on PC because Rockstar are idiots, gives COD a 2-3million sales advantage off the bat

I think GTA V will outsell next years Cod , but not Mw3. Seeing as MW3 was a huge dissapontment to many people. I think MW3 will stay as the most sold game ever for a very long time (I really don't understand how soo many people could buy a game, they knew was going to be cr*p!).

Ace combat Assault horizon is a prime example of that, blew through it once and its shelved apart from the odd time i really want to play that mission where you do the bombing runs on the fleet in the black sea.
