SHMUPS have never been a dominant genre, more of a niche thing. But yes, there were a lot of SHMUPS coming out, mostly between 1992 and 1998, but since then there hasn't been nearly as many. Luckily there have been some very quailty SHMUPs on the 360 in recent years, and also a few good ones on the DS.
99% of them are exclusive to the 360 this generation. click on the links for game footage: akai katana is releasing in the US/UK next month and it's by far the best hori bullet hell shmups released this gen. The game mechanics are based around using an external arm (i.e. deathsmiles, guwange) and collecting energy, running the energy through bullets to gain more energy, then switching to ninja mode and collecting gold/running gold through bullets to gain more points. I've been spamming the JPN version and loving it. $40 retail release dodonpachi daifukkatsu ver 1.5 (and black label) - known as dodonpachi resurrection in EU. The JPN is region locked, but the EU version plays on both US and UK 360s. It's roughly 25-40 bucks to import it from europe. Has similar, but more lenient chaining/scoring system to other installments in the dodonpachi franchise. The black label version is only one loop, much more difficult, and much more enjoyable. espgaluda II released in japan only, but it's region-free. you can import the "platinum edition" for 40 dollars. It's the sequel to ESP Ra.De. and Espgaluda and also has similar mechanics. Retail $40 on 360 deathsmiles - localized worldwide. Another hori bullet hell shmup which is based around a minion/external arm. Very fun but easier than other cave shmups. mushihimesama futari ver. 1.5 - sequel to mushihimesama (bug princess). Completely new scoring system. Insanely hard difficulty - especially if you play ultra/god mode. $40 platinum edition retail import release on 360. $20 retail deathsmiles IIX - retail release in JPN, games on demand release in the US, not released in EU. follow up to deathsmiles. $10 on GoD I think? muchi muchi pork/pink sweets double pack - not a shmup for everyone. has a cult following and release in JPN only but region-free. Unfortunately you can only find it for around $120-$160 despite being released last year since it had a 1 run printing. Under Defeat - released in JPN only - 360 version is region-locked, PS3 version is region-free. other than mamoru-kun and senko no ronde, it's the only g-rev shmup worth snagging this gen despite it being a re-release. Guwange - released on 360 in all regions. Very awesome game where you have to focus on your hitbox, your shikigami, and the landscape as you make your way through each level. ikaruga and radiant silvergun were both re-released on XBL. Sine Mora was too, but I'm not really a fan of it. There's a bunch of issues in my eyes. Raiden IV and Raiden Fighters Aces both released on 360 retail exclusive. Castle of Shikigami 3 was released on the Wii. On PC there's Jamestown which is just okay...but crimzon clover is incredble. there's other games, but they're region-locked to japanese 360s so they aren't worth mentioning - although they are incredible.Have there been any good shoot em' ups in years? They're very much alive. They just found a new home on the digital market, a-la XBLA and PSN (maybe Steam too, I just couldn't say). There's the retro remakes (R-Type Dimensions) and many new originals like Sine Mora. If anything I'd say there's a resurrgence of the genre, just like there is for Fighters on disc media.
Great time if you're a fan :)
at least 75% of the titles I listed are disc based releases. Nearly every game released on xbla/psn is a re-release/port. Two exceptions being Sine Mora and Strania. [spoiler]They're very much alive. Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun are on XBLA, as is Trouble Witches NEO and Sine Mora. There is KOF Sky Stage, which I've heard is terrible, plus a few more which I've heard mixed things on. DeathSmiles is on Games of Demand, but after buying Futari 1.5 and Galuda 2 and not enjoying Futari (haven't even opened Galuda 2), I decided against DeathSmiles. I'm not a horizontal fan myself either.
But my favourite Shmup is definitely Jamestown, and it came out last year. It's on steam. I love it. However, Shmup purists probably frown on that opinion though; anything that isn't Cave related seems to be thought of as second rate among the hardcore shmup community. Crimzon Clover is my second favourite, and took me awhile to track down to get a retail copy, but it's amazing fun. Ikaruga is probably my third favourite, though Jamestown and CC play more like a Cave shooter than lkaruga.. I think it might be the aesthetic and music of Cave shooters that put me off.. If I spent more time with them I'd probably love them. I haven't got around to Radiant Silvergun yet..
Came in here to say this, more or less. For the love of god play Sin & Punishment Star Successor!!!
Darth-Samus
the side scrollers went the bullet hell route and are too hard to bother with playing
The 3D ones are on rails and play like arcade light gun shooters

I haven't got around to Radiant Silvergun yet..Twin-BladeI think the main viewpoint of most "purists" is that anything other than Cave, Treasure, G.Rev, and Touhou is second rate. The main reason Cave has a lot of fanboys - because cave is composed of mostly ex Toaplan and 8ing/Raizing members (and Yagawa of course). Another reason is because the rate at which Cave releases shmup games is absurd (cave has released more than any other company this gen). and then of course there's a massive group of cave fanboys that bash anything that isn't cave developed. shmups.system11.org is representative of the true purists who love good shmups regardless who develops 'em. sucks you don't really like many of the cave releases, because as a shmup fan that basically cuts out 1/3rd of the available games in the genre. You'd probably like ketsui since it's a sci-fi based bullet hell shmup with ships and huge machines, but unfortunately it's region-locked - which is strange since it seems that would appeal more to westerners than lollis and j-pop music. awesome to see another crimzon clover fan tho.

Based on those pics, is it just the Japanese market that has these games on disc, and available only as DD here in NA?
Jamestown As far as I'm concerned as perfect as a shump can be.skrat_01
If only there was online multiplayer :(
I can not play with my brother when he's 3,000 miles away!
at least 75% of the titles I listed are disc based releases. Nearly every game released on xbla/psn is a re-release/port. Two exceptions being Sine Mora and Strania. [spoiler][QUOTE="Some-Mist"][QUOTE="AdobeArtist"]
Great time if you're a fan :)

castle of shikigami, otomedius excellent, raiden fighters aces, raiden IV, deathsmiles, akai katana, wartech: senko no ronde have been/will be released in the US retail (you used to be able to find them at gamestop/best buy), and dodonpachi daifukkatsu (resurrection) has been released in the UK. everything is region-free and import friendly with the exception of ketsui, dodonpachi daioujou, senko no ronde duo, radirgy noa massive, and mushihimesama hd. mine are primarily in japanese because I import them a year or two before they're localized. plus there's additional game modes/dlc in the japanese versions that aren't included in localizations.Well they were huge in the arcades & made Billions of quarters, that should count for something right? Space invaders,Galaxian,Galaga,Asteroids,Centipede,Millipede,Defender,Stargate Were popular.
Yeah it was the dominant genre once. Space Invaders and Asteroids were really popular in the arcades.SHMUPS have never been a dominant genre, more of a niche thing. But yes, there were a lot of SHMUPS coming out, mostly between 1992 and 1998, but since then there hasn't been nearly as many. Luckily there have been some very quailty SHMUPs on the 360 in recent years, and also a few good ones on the DS.
