I'm sick of playing games that run bad with low frame rates and don't even support 1080p, who else agrees that it should be made compulsory?

Yes, but not this gen (on consoles). The tech in these machines just can't handle it.

This cannot be done on consoles because it lacks power.

Look at multiplat games If you play it on PC you can set the resolution at higher resolution but on consoles most games are on 720p why?

the only reason I can think of is because it cannot be done because of the hardware.

I don't know if I'm right.

one step at a time. we are just now starting to use hd, and even now sd is far more common. If you want that, then go and buy yourself a fancy pc as there is no way the current gen consoles will be able to handle that on a consistent basis (despite what certain ex sony execs might have said)....

games are fine as they are, although they should have at least 2 x AA

No. Devs are already breaking the banks developing high budget titles... no need to go into debt even more over something where alot of people wont even notice.

obviously the answer is no, due to many fundamental reasons.

if anyone wants to play games at top resolutions and fps, they should migrate to the pc.

I think even next-gen, 720p will still be like the minimum, it took people pretty long to get HDTVs, I don't think the majority of the mainstream has a 1080p TV, or are willing to upgrade to one in the next few years, either way I don't think 1080p will be a standard for a long time.

Are people on this board really this ignorant? It's all a matter of power, if I wanted I'd code a console game with a mandatory resolution of 2560x1600. Too bad the current console's power couldn't even run that at more than 1 FPS.

I can only notice the difference between 720p and 1080p on screens larger than 32" (except when you are too close) so 720p is ok

but on consoles they should do something about the framerates some games fps drops so much even when it is only on 720p.

The resolution isn't really important to me, not as much as a smooth framerate. I don't think the hardware, or the developers are equipeed to go full time 1080p yet.

Well the standard for framerate could be raised a bit, I think it's now somewhere between 20-30 in most games, making it so that it doesn't drop below 35 even during heavy scenes would be an improvement the current consoles might be capable. Of course that means the graphics won't be quite as nice but that didn't seem to stop CoD4 from selling like crazy.

Go play PC if resolution and framerate bother you that much. No matter how powerful consoles get, they'll always try to play the same games as on PC and thus will get the above mentioned problems.

720p is good enough and on most TV's can't tell a huge difference. I much rather better FPS and better visuals. Besides 360's have upscaled 1080p titles...good enough. The hardware for both consoles isn't good enough for native...serious visual downgrades and FPS would take place.

All that matters to me is that the game is entertaining and has as few technical flaws as possible. The specs mean nothing to me.

Not as many as consoles, and they'll just get less and less severe, especially considering how powerful gfx cards are getting. All multi-plat games will play smoothly in the near future at those rezs, regardless of how well optimized they are

I have two problems with this.

The first of course is some developers struggle to get 720p 30fps, what makes people think they can maintain 1080p 60fps?

Secondly the poll suggests achieving this quality level is just a matter of effort. Those settings require no more developer effort than existing games, what makes it difficult is the available resources to work with.

An extremely budget PC built in 2007 is going to be maxing all console games with little effort and definitely no frame rate issues. But, regardless, PCs get upgraded. A console maintains those frame rate and resolution problems forever and ever .. until they are brought to PC.

1920x1080p60 locked? Sure thing...but not until next generation. It's good to have a target at which to aim, but let's be reasonable. The current gen can't pull it off without sacrificing too much.

I think some of you don't understand the concept of framerate and resolution entirely. The whole 60fps thing will only come about when we are playing games one generation behind. When a game of a certain generation is played on a platform. pc included, of the same generation, it will almsot be technically impossible to get the highest resolution and the highest framerate, unless of course you are willing to play with bad textures.

For instance, when Half Life 2 came out, the hardware at that time was say...GeForce 6 series. With it, you get 40fps at 1280x1024.

Then only when geforce 7950 came out, then we could get 60fps at that same resolution with better AA. The catch is this, you need a card one generation ahead to achieve this. The other way is to play Half Life 2 with almost zero textures with a 6 series card, then perhaps you can get 60fps.

This logic applies for consoles as well. If games were locked or obligated to deliver 60 fps at 1080p, we wouldn't even get Gears of War, Halo 3 and GTA4 this generation, because it would be technically impossible. You would have to wait till the xbox720 and ps4 to come out in order to play those games. That way, we will be playing games one generation late....all for the sake of a mere additional 30fps.

It doesn't take 60fps and 1080p to make a good game. I agree that when the framrate drops to below 30 fps, you can get irritated, but i don't see 60fps as a prerequisite for good games. I tell you what, how bout i stick to the system we have here, while you guys, especially the OP, start playing the games we have now when the next generation of consoles come out. That way, your games will be discounted, and you get 60fps and 1080p. A win win right? Not!! Now you know how silly some of you sound.

no.

letting developers have flexability is the best way... games that aren't very fast paced dont need to run at 60 fps... and 1080p resolution can severelylower performance if youwant alot of eye candy in your game.

the only games that will run at 1080p @ 60 FPS are games like wipeout HD. that game is so fast paced it needs to runat high frames. also it doesn't have that mucheye candy (like physics andsuper high poly countsetc...) it looks great butstill,it can be 1080P and wont slow it down

No for two reason.

1. The systems aren't powerful enough to do it without cutting corners in other areas of the game.

2. Most people that have HDTVs do not have 1080P HDTVs.

I beg to differ. 1080p@60Hz is pretty achievable with today's technology except for a few extreme cases. And technology will only improve in the coming year or two, allowing the games to get even more complex before they start to chug. I expect 1080p60 to be easily achievable in commodity PCs by late 2010/early 2011, about the time the next console generation is expected to appear. With a fixed resolution (especially one that should be easy to achieve), devs should concern themselves less with technical trickery to get enough pixels on screen and more with aesthetics and how best to display their game at the given resolution.

1080p/60 is not happening this gen (in any numbers). 720p is fine for me (although 1080p would look better on my TV). But to be clear, i'm much more concerned about a consistent framerate than the difference between 720 and 1080p

I wish it was as easy as having a switch. Hey, want 1080p and 60fps? Just get better developers and flip the secret 1080p 60fps switch. There is a reason most games are uncapable of doing this, and the fault lies with the hardware, not the software. If you want 1080p and 60fps, be prepared to spend a lot more than 400 dollars for your gaming console.

No.....1080p is worthless at this point its pros do not outweigh its cons, and 60 fps pros dont out weigh its cons.
