Dragon Age 2 is the latest new game to come out without any SDTV support and a surprising number of people are upset... Honestly I think SDTV is like B&W... I don't think modern consoles should be forced to program for them any more than PC games should have a 800x600 resolutions.

My bet is almost all standard TV's nowadays are in the kids playroom and while it makes sense for childrens games to support them I don't see why adult games should bother.

Just do the letterbox HD like a lot of TV networks are starting to. Same aspect ratio, less resolution. I don't see the problem with that. Eliminating SD still eliminates a large market.

Yes, SDTV should be supported, as long as it looks good in HDTV as well. I wish there was some way to make PS2 games look good at full screen on my HDTV. I don't really like playing it with all the black boxes around the sides, but I don't feel like putting my old SDTV in my room just to make them look better.

Um yes. Not everyone has the money to buy an HDTV. SDTV players are still a big chunk of the gaming population.

Yes, considering there are still gamers who haven't upgraded to HDTV's or monitors.

Oohh. I didn't know there were any console games without SD support at all. I figured that wouldn't happen until next gen at least. That actually kind of sucks. If it's not the *norm* I could see being caught off guard and really pissed off if I paid $60 for a game, then went to boot it up and got a blank screen with "resolution not supported".

I mean honestly, what is the HDTV adaption rate? It's probably just getting over 50%. Obviously you can't even buy a new SDTV anymore and it's been that way for a few years I'm sure, but I'm also sure lots of people are still using SDTV's that are around 5 years old or more. It will take tiem for everyone to move to HD. I didn't upgrade to HD myself until about 2 years ago (and I still have 2 SDTV's in my house, well 1 that's in use at least). Hell up until last year I was still splitting time between HD and SD, but I finally got a 2nd HDTV so I could have my PS3 hooked up all the time

Hey, we still have to support console limitations. I fail to see how this is any different.

No. Almost everyone has an HDTV and you can get one for 150$ if you don't have one then instead of buying games get an hdtv.

as the saying goes dont fix it if it hasent broken yet.I personally think its a tad pointless to replace stuff if it hasnt broken yet either because i think its a waste of cash and generally unessecary.

A good example is me using a trust 256mb samsung mp3 player for nearly 4 years then it broke and i got a Zen.

HD screens aren't even expensive, I bought my 22 inch 1080p monitor for $200 back in jan 2009. If they can afford a $200-300 console and $60 games then they can afford to buy a $200-300 hd screen.

No, they have to keep continuing to support them. I mean Dragon AGe 2 is kind of an exception, but it's consoloziededed so nm. Too many people have SDTVs.

Yes.

Until companies cease production of sdtvs they have to make everything compatible. If someone told me I had to get 'this' in order to get 'their' service, I would tell them to shove it and their service.

Sure HDTV's are cheaper than ever. But you know what, so is an SDTV. Most people are cheap.

No one wants to be the first to change. If both Sony and MS said, no more games in sd, you must upgrade. Nintendo's new marketing strategy would then be,

"Nintendo, SD compatible. We, still care."

...and playing in SD is certainly not one of them. In shooters like Battlefireld, where you sometimes need to pay close attention to your surroundings to avoid walking into an ambush, playing in SD will only hamper your vision and lower your effectiveness in the game. I wouldn't want someone that can't tell the difference between a bush and and sniper right in front of him because he's playing on a crappy outdated TV in my team.

Most console gamers are casual and a lot wont have HD. Sony and MS are unlikely to eliminate there own market.

Besides which only 1 or 2 games are in HD anyway so the arguement is redundant.

Eh i dont even see the point in even upgrading standards if the TV is perfectly functional and does its job already :S i didnt go HD till my old tv died which was a matsui vcr/tv combo from the late 90's a couple years back.It was perfectly functional for gaming on tbh and servicable.

Neither do i see the need in upgrading to the newest bass amp cause its more up to date and has some more modelling effects, wow am i going to use em nope.Same goes with a TV i just like coming in chucking on my sky box and sitting back watching telly or firing up a game for a quick blast.

In terms of functionality all a tv essentially needs to be able to watch tv, have basic connections and at least be able to play games.Mind you go hD and you take a bump in them being absurdly horrible when it comes to older consoles using RF inputs something i loathe bout HD tvs least my old CRT was fairly easy to tune up and get a picture on my megadrive instead my Samsung is a horrible beast with anything pre-2000.

SDTVs are ancient. HDTVs are cheap. You can play all the latest games with SDTVs, good luck trying to read the text though lol

when I first bought my X360 I used a SDTV, it did the job but the experience in HD was much better.

HDTV's are still not 100% of the market... so no. They should continue to support SD displays for as long as there are still people out there who use them. Playing Dead Rising on a SDTV is fun... but reading the text is infuriating.

They still sell SD displays at retail. Until they stop it would be ignorant for a developer not to support SD displays.

I haven't seen an SD set on sale at any retailer I've been to in at LEAST two years. Not saying they don't exist, but I live in Dallas so it's not like there's not a sufficient sample size to draw some conclusions.

I agree I still use a Portable CD player from 2000 instead of an MP3 Player because it isn't broken. I will do the same thing with tvs.

I only have one HDtv in my house and that is because it replaced a tv that was broken.

Whoah DA2 doesn't support SDTV players? That's pretty lame. I mean most of the games on consoles don't even run in a native hd resolution.

Well we are not talking True HD resolution as much as the 4:3 display that older televisions have.

Of course they should. The HD capable consoles that are out right now originally did not even ship with HD cables, and in the 360's case, didn't even have a HDMI port.

That reminds me, anyone here old enough to remember the BW / Color toggle switch on the 2600? :)

Yes taking it out is stupid imo not everyone owns or desires a hdtv and pc games should support multiple resolutions without fault 640x480 is a godsend when your playing on a $400 laptop with integrated graphics :D a shame alot of games have 800x600 minimum or even 1027x768 nowadays. And for the record i don't like SD all my t.vs/monitors in my house are HD and haven't owned a sdtv for like 3 years now.

They could but imo if you can't upgrade to a HDTV (there's like 22" tvs for like $200) you really shouldn't even be gaming lol

Um yes. Not everyone has the money to buy an HDTV. SDTV players are still a big chunk of the gaming population.

You can get 20" HDTV tvs for under $200 now. People need to get with the times

Maybe they have a bigger SDTV? A 20" TV is pretty damn lame. Funny thins is you console gamers say "get with the times" yet you guys are rocking 5 year old hardware :? That makes no sense what so ever.

Not really. I do have a couple HDTV's, but I also have a 32" JVC flat tube TV that is SDTV, I got it when HDTV's were basically just starting to come out (i.e. when the only HDTV's were those behemoth CRT HDTV's that cost $1500 and weighed even more than a regular CRT TV).

The quality on that JVC one is actually pretty good, and more importantly it still works 100%. I have another CRT TV that works as well but it is out in the garage now. THe problem is that CRT TV's basically can last forever, and some people don't like replacing things that arent' broken. I was a little sketchy about replacing my television just to get HD. Hell I had HD cable for awhile to justify my HDTV purchases, but decided I don't really watch enough TV for that to be worth it. So now I only have basic SD cable again that I run through my HDTV's. Basically the only thing I even use HDTV for is my PS3 and some movies. It is worth it for PS3 and movies, but I was definitely hesitant about getting HDTV when nothing was really "broken" on my existing televisions. Eventually I just figured what the heck, the old TV's were probably never going to "break" so might as well get new ones.

I still have SDTV, Older games look pitiful on HDTVs and it should be an option.. I do not understand how a company can in good faith ignore a large chunk of their fanbase.
