Poll Should i build a Volta PC? Is 60hz and a few more games worth it? (33 votes)

Not Worth it for your setup 12%
Only worth it if 120hz @ 4k OLED's existed 6%
60hz + More Games is worth the investment 82%

I have a X1X, PS4 Pro, and Switch hooked up to my 65" 4K OLED + Atmos 5.1.4 Home Theater. If i build a PC it's going to be connected to this same 60hz OLED, I'm not going to get a LCD Gaming Monitor for my PC.. I prefer 60hz OLED over 120-144hz LCD. I'm a junky for HDR, Atmos, and my 18" Subwoofer.

Most of the games i like for PC, are available for my X1X.

For $380 dollars my X1X has served me and my family of 4 as a 4k HDR Gaming Machine, 4k HDR+Atmos Bluray player, and a great place for 4k HDR Streaming Apps like Netflix, Amazon, HBO, Plex and more. Only negative being no Dolby Vision support as of yet.

For the PC Build I'd want Windows 10 Gamer Edition, CPU, GPU, 16GB GDDR4 RAM, SSD, SSHD, and AIO Water Cooler. I already have a case and a PSU. I don't love my case design but the case is huge and hides inside my AV Cabinet nicely, and since it's huge it's easy for the PC to stay cool while being overclocked in my AV Cabinet. That spot in my AV Cabinet is begging for use, but it would be $1300-1400? $1300-1400 for higher refresh rates and some new games. HDR and Atmos is more important to me than the higher refresh rates, but i could still buy PC versions of games when a X1X game doesn't have HDR or Atmos.

  • +I have old PC Parts i can reuse (PSU, Case, Fans, Fan Controller)
  • +Sold Old Motherboard, GPU, CPU, DDR3 RAM, CPU FAN for $450
  • +Fill SPot in AV Cabinet
  • +Native 4k 60hz in most games
  • +PC Exclusive Games ?
  • -1300 Dollars to Spend
  • - Less HDR Games
  • -Less Atmos Games
  • -HDR And Atmos harder to activate on PC when Available
  • -Leaves no Space in AV Cabinet

generally speaking, you won't find any kind of exclusivity with CPU and GPU (those monitors with extra features excluded).

I would look into a soundcard, maybe? But if you're hooking up to your receiver don't worry about it.

@m3Boarder32: Well you’re gonna be waiting until the summer at the earliest for new GPUs. And the rumors going around is that they won’t be cheap. As for what we have now, a 1080Ti at MSRP is $700. So even if it were at msrp now, your budget would be suuuuuuper tight. Your CPU will run $250-$350, RAM another $200, cooler another $100ish, 1TB worth of SSDs will hit another $250+. That’s another $800 minimum. Your budget is blown.

Should have been in the PC/Mac/Linux Society since this is about PC games

Why? I’m curious to know if console gamers think it’s worth it. They wouldnt participate in that forum.

I was dissing pc gaming, hence it was a thread for system wars. You are talking about hardware for what? What's the point?

If I was to answer seriously based on what is said so far:

You will have the same pricing problem with "Volta".

The 1080 TI will probably match the new Volta Card anyway, as there seems to be only a small gap between a TI and the newer gen's release.

IF you can get a deal on a 1080 TI via various methods... I would do that.

Don’t need a sound card, just connect the GPU to the Receiver

Well, you can mod many games to look nearly a gen ahead on PC, so sure. :P

The Witcher 3 modded craps all over the One X version.

Loading Video...

And the XBOX One X Re-release of GTA V won't hold a candle to this.

Yes, I actually checked this complete overhaul mod out. It's extremely nice. The only problem is the game isn't all that great by itself; there are some fun mods for it, but modding it is a bitch and a half.

I remember beating GTA V on consoles back when it was released but man this looks sweet. May have to pick this up, why did you say that modding is a pain? Just tedious to go through the installation process of all the mods?

@dagubot: Yeah, there's a long checklist you have to go through when installing mods. It's not just drag and drop like Skyrim or The Witcher 3 are. It looks like there was a few updates to Open IV, so mod installing may be easier then when I tried it a year or so ago, but I'm not exactly sure on that. Back then, I had to install Open IV, install a secondary app, then unpack the files with Open IV, then drag and drop, then install something else. It was just a pain to install everything, much less make sure everything was working correctly after launching the game.

Dollar for dollar a shelf speaker will be better since those dollars will be focused on fewer drivers and a smaller enclosure, but if you're willing to spend the money and have a decently sized room, you should go with tower speakers (at least for the front two channels),especially if you're only using one large sub instead of multiples around the room.

Than why would you ever get a Tower Speaker lol

not saying I agree with you, but that statement made the rest of your post null.

The problem with bookshelf speakers (especially if they are located in a big room) is they lack in the mid bass due to lack of power and drivers. So, you have to over compensate with the subwoofer. This creates an unbalanced sound. You lose a lot of the tight kick/punch in the sound and you don't get the smooth, balanced, and full sound across the whole frequency range.

For the record, I also use bookshelf speakers, but I live in a condo and I can't go too crazy with my system.

my speakers play flat down to 70hz, and my subwoofer flat from 10-100hz.

My subwoofer crossover is set to 90hz.

I auditioned a dozen towers and bookshelves these bookshelves were my favorite at under 2k a pair.

There are drawbacks to that, but a lot also depends on the room setup and the equipment.

As for tower vs bookshelf, take the BMR Philharmonitor for example, it starts at $1,350/pr and offers useful bass down to 32 Hz.

For a bookshelf (albeit a larger one) it has some serious performance with an on-axis frequency response of 32 Hz - 20 Hz (+/- 2db).

RAAL tweeter / Tectonic radiator / Scan Speak woofer

Red: on-axis / Blue: 30 degrees off-axis / Green: 80 degrees off-axis
Red: on-axis / Blue: 30 degrees off-axis / Green: 80 degrees off-axis

One might even be hard pressed to find a tower speaker with this type of performance for under $2000~$3000.

PC Gaming isn't worth it right now. Wait it out another 5 years/Next gen consoles before upgrading.

That's a myth. I just built a high end PC last month for ~$1200. The same price it would have cost me any other year. Ryzen 5 1600 + GTX 1080 (the 1080 was $549 brand new).

Geforce Store and EVGA still sell GPUs at MSRP. All other components are the same price they have always been, except RAM, which has gone up about $100 from a few years ago.

Where the hell did you get a 1080 for just over $500?

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/products/10series/geforce-store/

and

https://www.evga.com/products/productlist.aspx?type=0&family=GeForce+10+Series+Family&chipset=GTX+1080

Nvidia restocks once a month and EVGA every week. The only catch with EVGA is they don't ship to Canada (if that's where you live, like me), only the US and EU.

Lmao the poll results.

Thread backfire.

But yes, playing the superior version of over 90% of video games (digital foundry) and 30 to 60 fps in many games is worth $1300. On top of having an exponentially larger AAA/AA library this gen alone.

Looks like you're right. I thought I read somewhere they didn't. They don't seem to charge Canadian tax though, so you'll be paying customs/duties (not sure how much higher than is over Nvidia who charges Canadian tax).

Often you won't be charged customs/duties if they offer free shipping.

Obviously you have the money, I'd get a bigger TV, 80"+ or so. I kinda think my 65" is too small :P Would like a 75", but I have to wait for more models to come out. The current Samsung MU-series would be great for the price, but my current KS7005 (EU model) beats those in almost every aspect (HDR brightness, overall contrast etc etc.) Wouldn't want to downgrade that much.
