OK owners of either. I am going to purchase a handheld soon. I want mainly games and will worry about extras later. I would like to play RPG's (both Western and Japanese) and a few other action titles. Which is the best buy?

if you have a ps2 then get a DS cause you're not missing out on much. Otherwise get a psp i guess if you prefer those games.

Edit : Just saw you wanting RPG's. I think the DS has a larger selection of RPG's but I'm not completely sure.

PS: Pokemon is NOT a bad game, it's really good and addicting, and I'm 19 years old btw. Don't think you're macho for playing computer games and play to have fun.

If your're in to RPGs you can choose from a wide array of Easterns such as Pokemon, Final Fantasy, and Mario & Luigi. Plus you've got a different way to play with the touch screen.

You'll get more Westerns and better visuals on the PSP.

So it's all a matter of preference.

The PSP would be a huge mistake. It's future is bleak, its more expensive, and most importantly, it has no good games.

No good games? Rachet and Clank: Size Matters? Dax? Twisted Metal? Pirates? Virtua Tennis? Sports games that can seriously rival console counterparts? What are you talking about? Syphon Filter and Metal Gear Solid? That's plenty of great games. And the future is bleak? What are you talking about? UMD movies are still released to this day, and many awesome games are still on the way. Oblivion and Final Fantasy to name a couple.

How is MGS: Portable Ops?DXGreat1_HGL

The reviews for it have been outstanding and it's also a good showcase of what the PSP can deliver in terms of graphics.
I haven't played it myself, but I'm sure to buy it later this month.

But to get back to your question: it really depends on what you're looking for. If media applications are also a big deal for you, then PSP would be the wiser choice since you can convert any movie file tp mp4 and upload it to your PSP.

If that doesn't matter much to you, go by the games.

The DS has the larger library than the PSP and it has a lot of interesting titles to offer. There aren't as many games around for the PSP, but that doesn't mean that there are hardly any interesting games around. My best advise is, do some research on your own (such as browsing through the games by genre here on Gamespot) and base your decision upon that.

Obviosuly, both are strong handhelds and both have their strengths. It just boils down to which features are more important to you and which games you like better.

I've had my PSP for 5 months now, and I still enjoy it a lot for all it has to offer.

Buy a DS Apart from actually being successful and having a future it has more games coming, the games are exclusive and the hardware is actually suitable for portable play. The PSP has a few quality ports and remakes coming but it's pretty much a dead system. The DS is winning for a reason, leave the PSP for little kids posing as "Gangstas"

Again, SW people confuse ports with games that are in the same series.  Ratchet and Clank:  Size Matters and Syphon Filter are not ports.  In fact, they are full-on sequels and add a hell of a lot of new gameplay mechanics into their respective series.  Games like MP: H do not.

Ratchet is probably more similar to its predecessors than MPH but in both cases they are not ports, just spinoffs. Syphon Filter is multiplat though (now that it's coming to the vastly superior PS2)

I would definatly reccoemnd owning botha t some point in the future. But the DS is vastly superior so i would make that your priority. If you already own a PS2 you have access to the best of the PSP library already. In addition the PSP doesn't really have much to get in the future as support sarts to cool. The Ds on the other hand has the following games to look forward to (and alot of this years lineup has yet to be revealed) Zelda TPH Tingle RPG Chibi Robo Picross DS Panel De Pon Dragon Quest 9 Untitled Bioware RPG ASH FF12 Revenant Wings Heroes of Mana FF Tactics Advance 2 Dragon Quest Monsters Joker Etrian Odyssey Vandal Hearts Megaman ZX 2 Sonic Rush 2 Shin Megami Tensei DS Phoenix Wright 3+4 Professor Layton 1-3 Sinking Island Untitled Telltale adventure game(s) Panzer Tactics Warlords DS Disciples DS Assasins Creed Untitle POP exclusive BIA DS Settlers Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword Its A Wonderful World Final Fantasy IV Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon 1+2 Raid Over The River Front Mission 1st : 2090: The Second Huffman Conflict Silver Case 1+2 and alot more i've missed off. Some of it will be good, some of it wont. It's damn impressive nonetheless

If you are more of an RPG fan, get the DS, or if you are more into Action games, get the PSP.  Personally, I like the DS more, but only because it has more games that interest me, and your tastes are probably different than mine, so it really boils down to what interests you more.

Here are the games that if one gets a PSP needs to get:

Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception

Tekken: Dark Ressurection

Burnout Legends

Wipeout Pure

Lumines II (better than 1st)

GTA: LCS

GTA: VCS

SOCOM FTB 2 (better than first)

Twisted Metal: Head On

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops

Metal Gear Acid 2 (better than 1st)

Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror

Daxter

Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters

Valkrie Profile: Lenneth

Killzone: Liberation

Loco Roco

Gitaroo Man Lives

Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee

Every Extend Extra

Mega Man Powered Up

and besides, the PSP's sports games are basically as good as the console versions, so if you like yourself some sports and you want to take them on the go...

If i were you i'd get a ds since theres 4 different final fantasys coming out for it, dragon warrior 9, ninja gaiden, and legend of zelda. Games already out u could get metroid prime hunters or pokemon(its the first pokemon game ive bought since blue and im loving it). The only reason really to get a psp is if u want something that can watch videos/play music but if u really want that get a ipod instead.

currently, no... I don't think you'll be seeing any Four Swords Adventures type interactivity any time soon, if at all.

btw, here's a link to a DS vs. PSP genre comparison thread I just made.  Might help a bit in deciding which one is best for you.

The PSP also has a few lesser known titles comming out soon that strike my fancy:

Castlevania (contains SotN & a 2D/3D graphically suped up castlevania adventure)

Dead Head Fred (check it out on IGN)

Dungeons & Dragons tactics (I'm a sucker for tactics games)

Final Fantasy: dissidia (sp?) (final fantasy fighting game like SSB)

Monster Hunter 2 (for die hard players of the MH series this is like crack 150+ hours of gameplay)

there are a bunch more... but I look for the less advertised stuff like puzzle quest was and I'm never dissappointed with the selection of stuff on the psp.  The DS is cool too but I got that for my niece instead and just play a game here and there, but its not my thing I guess.

Like all systems its a personal preference. You should compare games you like, features your like and than decided. Im getting a psp because it has more action games, more features, good graphics, and i can use it with my ps3.

The PSP would be a huge mistake. It's future is bleak, its more expensive, and most importantly, it has no good games.Plug1Plug2

That has been said since 2005 and guess what is not true,Its future has been secured with God of war,It has a price drop,it has most of the AA games. With the current library it has plus the price drop a PSP would be a wise decision. Also God of war,Syphon filter,FF:CC,Devil may cry,Monster hunter Freedom 2nd,Exit 2.Also that old PSP games have a good discount.

Get Classic PSP games for less than 20$,Is a great time for PSP owners.

[QUOTE="darknightmario9"] eah but the controlls suck for size matters and basicly all game so do youre self a favor and get a ds it has final fantasy 4, entian oddeesy, wonderful life, rune factory, metroid prime hunters, the new super mario bros, mario kart ds,mega man starforce, pokemon diamond and pearl, and custum robo and if you dont like pokemon get diamond and peral im not a huge fan of pokemon but diamond rules and crushes any rpg for the psp. the only games i would get for the psp are valkrie profile lenneth prusuit force ape escape on the loose and super ghost in ghouls

Lenneth is a VERY bad port pursuit force is coming to the PSP (or the sequel is, i cant remember) as well as this so iss syphon filter GnG is something i would buy the system for, but it is in the minority There are very few reasons to own a PSP is you own a PS2. and if you dont own a PS2 you're not a gamer
