One of the more discussed things is Nintendo's switch to the so-called casual gaming which implys motion controls, poor graphics and shallow, family friendly games.

There's no secret that the empasis on graphics and "core" image was reduced by a lot with the DS and Wii.

But the question I have here is - should Nintendo try to compete with MS and Sony in their own area?

By that I mean more focus on "cutting-edge" graphics, a "normal" controller and games that would fulfil the "competition principle".

So instead of the regular Mario and Zelda games they would make some Uncharted/Gears of War, Gran Turismo/Forza and Halo/KillZone clones in "realistic" graphics.

So, would you rather have them try to make a new "XboxStation" instead of a unique new console?

No. Three's a crowd.

Let the 2 big boys fight it off.

Nintendo should simply be that small niche company.

No, they need to stick to gimmicks. We all saw what happened when the N64 and Gamecube had to compete with the PS1 and PS2.

Sure they SHOULD but they won't they will continue as always trying to be the Disney of the videogame world to the best of their abilities, the idiot fanboys will continue their pathetic worship and damage control as their consoles sit in their closets covered in dust unplayed and eventually with any luck Wii U will be such a disaster it forces the evil Nintendo company to finally go third party like Sega before them.

For consoles to be worth anything to me they have to launch for under $300. If anythingI want Sonyand MS to stop trying to compete with PC. Nintendo gets it, Sony/MS don't.

I wouldn't eat your wheaties.. sounds like you think Nintendo peed in them. So one generation of console they don't 'compete' graphics wise and they are an evil company now. You fail at being a troll.

Lol, are you aware that the majority of multi-platforms works better on the Xbox that on the Playstation right? Xbox is also better for Shooters and JPRGs. We also have great IPs like Alan Wake, Halo and Gears of War. Just because we have Kinect doesn't mean we are going full casual. Oh wait you have PSMove, I'm betting that Sony will go completely casual next gen. We can have audience for both casual gamers and hardcore gamers. Don't talk that kind of crap.

Yes, they need to step up their tech, because honestly if they do not, they will lose people to Xbox. MS manages to keep the Xbox pretty cheap, appeal to casuals (Kinect), and core gamers (....dont ask me how :P). If they continue with outdated tech, they will be left behind IMO. I think we will see the WiiU do a bit of a compromise, similar to the 3DS. The 3DS is by no means ugly and the 3D really is quite awesome, so its graphics are nothing to sneeze it. The Vita is no doubt better in this department, but still the 3DS does pretty well, and they are serving core gamers too.

I think they are going to focus more on the core gamer market with the WiiU than they did with the Wii. they even said themselves, the Wii could coexist with the WiiU.

Nintendo did compete for the core gamers and was crushed by Sony. This is probably why they went the casual route with the Wii.

I think the Sony/MS will have the core market on lock again next gen. I could see Nintendo going for core gamers at first but if those gamers ignore the Wii-U, I could see them abandoning that goal and focusing on the casual market again.

I think their goal is to please everyone, and definitely please the Core gamers more than they did with the Wii. The 3DS already has a lineup that rivals (possibly beats) the Wii IMO, which is saying something. They clearly are still focusing on innovation and such too, but its also clear that they realize they did nto focus enough on online, core games, and maybe specs (who knows if the WiiU will really push this that much). I would love cutting edge graphics, but core games is the most important thing to me, especially since HD is confirmed :).

Why? When they will be either way when Nintendo blazes their own path with a new direction, controller and wait 3-4 years for MS/Sony to release a knock off that tries to compete with that?

Sony have only pushed the boat out once when it comes to consoles and this is with the PS3. The 2 gens before they chucked out poor consoles in hardware but got loads 3rd party support which is why they won 2x gens in a row and not due to hardware. Sony havent the money now to sell at a loss now, People shouldnt expect some super console.

MS have got their leg right up Sony's backside, They made their mark on Sony's Market share which was the plan. MS idea now is create a console which is powerful but not to sell it at a loss and recoup money afterwards. MS will rather buy timed-exclusives, DLC rather than put money into development studios which is working for them this gen. MS knows that multi-plats reign supreme.

Nintendo pushed the boat out from Nes > GC era but in the gens of the N64 and GC got anhilated by the competition. Nintendo crippled themselves in N64 era and have been fighting for support ever since thanks to keeping to thecartridge and other reasons. Nintendo have always had their 1st party to fall back on but still suffer with a vague 3rd party support which seems to be still wont support nintendo in the Wii-U Gen. Nintendo went down the route of attempting to support more users and it worked but the core nintendo fans feel that theyre no longer wanted.

In my opinion Nintendo wins more if they don't engage on big fights with Microsoft and Sony.

If Nintendo keeps casual it will sell a lot. But then again what the hell is the Wii-U? A Wii with a different controller? Jeez, not even the color of the console was changed, way to be original Nintendo.

Microsoft lost a s**t ton of money last gen and this gen, and has only been "getting by" on sloppy seconds.

They definitely aren't going to abandon the core crowd altogether, but it's safe to say that they will try to win over casuals next gen. Whether through games, new online features, kinect or some other device.

Yes and no. I want them to compete Hardware wise, I want them to have a system that is powerful enough that it can get the same third party games that Sony and Microsoft's systems can, but at the same time I want them to be able to keep bringing us unique experience like Super Mario Galaxy and Zelda: Skyward Sword. IMO the best way to do this is to simply have multiple control schemes, just as both Sony and Microsoft have with Move and Kinect, that way you can still have the Wiimote with the Wii Motion+ for the games Nintendo wants to make, but also have a more traditional controller for the third party developers who wish to be able to bring there multi-platforms over to Nintendo's new system. Doing this also opens up the opportunity for Nintendo to make more traditional games, as well as for third-parties, who where put of by the limited power of the Wii to experiment with the Wii Motion+.

True. I dont think anyone can dominate as the PS2 did, becaues many games are multiplate. Still Nintendo needs to add something new, but definitely get with the times in terms of tech. It needs HD. It needs good online (3DS does this fairly well). And it needs graphics that are atleast comporable to PS3 and 360 (preferably siginificantly better), and it will have all of those things.

I am sure I will have a WiiU, PS4, PC combo, just as I do this gen (PC, Wii, PS3). MS would need to blow me away to get my money again.

3DS does some things really well for online, and some not so well. I actually have not played a game online yet lol, but he shope and such is what I am reffering to. I feel it is good enough, but needs to fixing here and there. I am fairly confident Nintendo will deliver with the WiiU, and make me much happier than I was with the Wii.

What do you mean by "directly"? They are already competing directly lol, you can't compete any other way. Nintendo is the clear winner in terms of sales so you can bet that the other two guys are going to compete with Nintendo's idea. It's already evident in Move and Kinect, the trick though is to have games that use a controller and motion controll, that way you have a wide variety of people to buy your system and everyone is happy.

I don't think they can anymore. I mean look at the new Wii U controller......

But I know I can't be the only person to like blood and gore in my video games. Nintendo exclusives don't have that. Even Zelda is a kiddish game to me. Nintendo should sell their company, and make Zelda & Mario available to Ps3 and 360 with blood, gore, and cussing.

If you're butthurt over it, that doesn't mean it's not true. It was in forbes as well. Google it. Bing it. Yahoo it. I don't really care.

Yea I like that Nintendo is actually going to try and go after the core gamer this time and the fact that I will be able to play Pikmin in HD is love. I still don't don't trust Nintendo when it comes to online gaming though. I will most likely have a Wii-U along with another console next gen.

MS would need to blow me away to get my money again.

Playstation has good exclusives and a blu-ray player. Besides that what's really the difference? Why does M$ needs to blow you away and Sony dont?

First of all, exclusives are almost everything when it comes to a console, cause PC kicks all their asses at multiplats. Aside from more good exclusives, they need a machine that doesnt suck. RROD among other issues plagued so many peoples 360. On top of that, they have proprietary this and proprietary that, which is really annoying. Oh and I have to pay to play online..... PC is easily my favorite system, but I buy the consoles for exclusives, which MS doesnt have much of (good ones) IMO.

I just bought a 360, and you're saying that in the future Xbox will go casual. That's kind of harsh to listen to.

Now this thread delivers. I've seen fanboys of all three companies duking it out in here and it's hilarious.

Nintendo won't get my money unless they finally get some actual third-party support. Nintendo doesn't need to try and do the graphical arms race Sony and Microsoft got themselves into, but they definitely need to get more third party support. As great as Nintendo's first party is, it's definitely not enough to get me to pick up their games. That said I likely won't be picking up a next-gen console for a while anyways, going to wait and see what Sony has to offer. I already know I won't be getting an Xbox as I refuse to pay for Xbox Live Gold. So I may just be PC only for a lot of the next generation, guess I'll just have to wait and see.

No, two clones are enough. What makes Nintendo products great is that they offer a different experience, and I'm from the camp that believes consoles should try to be unique in all aspects, and not just strive to be PCs.

In the future it will go casual? Wow, if its not casual now, I dont want to see the future! :P Sort of kidding obviously, but it isn't really any less casual than the Wii now. It has a few core exclusives out and coming recently, same with the Wii. It has tons of casual games, same with the Wii.

Then if I want to follow Assassin's Creed, Batman, Battlefield and other 'core' games I can't do it on a Microsoft console? (talking on next-gen obviously)

I like the 360 so much, the controllers, the console itself, I can't explain it. I just like it more than the Playstation

They seem to be, the 3DS is competing with Vita for the same market, and WiiU seems to be going after the "core" crowd. Though this idea that they ever truly became casual is laughable. They've always made amazing family friendly games. Is Super Mario Galaxy any less of a "core" game just because it appeals to a younger audience?

Thats fine. I am glad you like it. I honestly have no idea why anyone would buy a 360 if they didnt want at least one of the exclusives, but to each their own. I think the console itself is trash, you have to pay for online, and as for the controller...PC :P.

I understand, but the online play is so much better than PSN. Crap, what now? I trade my 360 for a PS3? Crap :(

If you are so resistant to PC gaming, and the small difference in online capabilities between 360 and PS3, then fine I see your reasoning. I am not being sarcastic either :P.

Yes I really like PC gaming, but it gets me too addicted. So I was thinking on getting a console and play on it instead of the PC.. I bought the 360 and now I hear this? What a disappointment.

They both are trying to expand audiences. 3ds doesn't really appeal to me any more than the ds did in comparison to psp/vita. so they may not succeed. Like I don't like 3ds has that analog attachment to achieve both analogs
