Since their systems haven't sold well since PS2?

There were not "systems" or consoles. There was A CONSOLE. Just the PS3.
If you were including handhelds, that is a different market and irrelevant.
PS3 did well just not astronomically great like the PS2. That is with a year later launch, a $600 price tag, online issues, hacking issues, very hard for devs. to work with, and a cocky attitude. This being said, you also need to take into account the the 360 was the 2nd Microsoft console. Take a look at the SNES for Nintendo and the PS2 for SONY, they both did well their 2nd generations as well. 3rd generations however.... not so hot, and the way things are looking for the 720, who knows if they will follow that trend. The good news is that SONY learned from their mistakes and admitted to being cocky and over confident and have already showed in MANY ways how they are changing all of that. Plus devs are excited as hell about the PS4... something that could NEVER be said about the PS3. It will definately be interesting to see how things stack up this coming generation, but I am highly confident that the PS4 will outshine the PS3 in EVERY category. Including sales, and support. I could be wrong, but lets be realistic... am I ever? lol
By the way by implying the 360 did "well" when it is highly debatable whether the PS3 or 360 did better this gen sales wise when Xbox fans try to make the PS3 sound like a flop is pretty funny. The race is really too close to call. Which in turn means the PS3 is sadly enough winning, because they have been in the race a year less than the 360. Also, the PS3 is still being supported which would be hard to claim for the 360.
I own both consoles, but to say either of the two blew the other away is funny as hell. The PS3/360 race has probably been the closest race of any two consoles in gaming history.
I find it very odd when people talk about third console genreation being bad for a company when the N64 and the PS2 are the only examples of it.
Also the PS3 isn't winning, the Xbox brand had next to no following, so anyone saying a year head start should be an advantage needs to stay off drugs. I also don't see how you can claim the 360 is not supported.
Maybe you misunderstood what I was trying to say. I was not talking about the third generation of gaming overall... I was talking about the BIG COMPANIES (Nintendo, Sega, Playstation, and Xbox) individual 3rd console generation.
However, if you were not confused:
N64 and "PS3" (fixed for accuracy) were the only two third generation company consoles that didn't do as well?
What about Atari with Atari 7800?
How about Sega with the Sega Saturn?
So that is ALL FOUR of the main console devs...
2nd generation company consoles (once again individually, NOT 2nd generation of gaming) have historically been their BEST while third have been their WORST.
The exception is that the SNES didn't sell as well as the NES... however it had much more competition it's 2nd generation. Many people consider the SNES the best Nintendo library overall as well.
Sega, Playstation, Xbox, and argueably Nintendo all had their BEST console 2nd in their lineups.
Sega Genesis, Playstation 2, Xbox 360, and Super Nintendo. All I'm saying is that the 720 will be Microsofts 3rd console, and if history repeats itself, things are not looking good. However, I am sure they are taking all measures to try and prevent that from happening.
If you are an Xbox fan, that is cool, I own all the major consoles basically throughout gaming, and I am a Xbox fan as well. However, I like the Xbox more then the 360 and I like PS2 more than the PS3. This generation sucked imo.
Also, I would say that it isn't hard to agree that SONY have supported the PS3 more than Microsoft has supported the 360 over the past couple of years.
I am not a fanboy, I am a collector and gamer of all formats. You already know that from the Retro boards however, so I dont know why you would interpret what I said the way you did.
