To have dark and mature atmosphere you pretty much have to have convincing graphics... Which is something Nintendo doesn't give a sh*t about.

I'd love to see Nintendo take the Zelda art direction in a princess mononoke, studio gibli inspired direction. That would be amazing.

In seriousness though, the combat and gameplay DO need updating big time, at least on the 3D format. It was one of the reasons why Skyward Sword disappointed me. At this point, I expect a more depth from an adventure game, especially from a series as old as Zelda.

zelda was never dark....what the hell SW posters be on?

the only "dark" zelda games was MM and that was subliminal dark with sadness and despair being its main theme

Seriously, this is at least the second thread you've made on this topic today.

Second, It's just not Zelda without some kind of light feel to it. It may seem like it's a good idea now, but eventually Zelda will just become another action-adventure series everyone hates because it's doing something every other action-adventure series out there is doing. If you like the dark atmosphere, just stick with Majora, Twilight, and Link's Awakening.

Ocarina of Time was also very dark. There are lots of dark touches like the dying soldier and what happens to the townspeople in the future. The game descends into a lot of ugly, dark settings as well.

The next Zelda should be Similar to TP's graphical style, but with much better graphics, like The Witcher 2

It needs to:

  • Bring back more exploration and sidequests. SS was more linear and lacked the sidequests of MM and WW.
  • Less hand holding than SS.
  • Deeper motion combat (or not motion). Improve upon it with more tactics and maybe more weapons...though not sure about that
  • Have a world similar to the size of TP and WW, combining the two styles making a decent sized land that is connected to an ocean that has plenty of islands to explore.
  • In short it needs to combine:
  1. MM's characters and sidequests
  2. TP's graphical sty1e and epic size
  3. Ocarina of Times pacing and environment variety
  4. WW's size and some sailing maybe
  5. SS's dungeon design (at times) and maybe motion controls brought to the next level

All wrapped up in beautiful graphics, new features, and hopefully a musical instrument :P.

Darker in themes, but no gore as that makes Zelda a Darksiders wannabe (and even that's more on the God of War side, rather than Zelda).

If by "Dark and Mature" another game like Majora's Mask ..then sure.

Otherwise... No,the charming fairy tale tone that Zelda is known for should stay.

Heck no! Then Zelda would just be like the rest. But Nintendo does need to make Zelda challenging like the early Zelda games. Then again the whole industry needs to make their games as challenging as retro games are.

Deeper combat system? Yes that could be great to see in Zelda.

And I wouldn't mind a more darker and mature theme for Zelda if it were like Majora's Mask; not the shallow kind of "maturity" where Link beheads countless goblins or rips the guts out of gibdos or whatever.

Majora's Mask type of dark is fine. It's a Nintendo type of dark. We don't need the stereotypical kinda of dark atmosphere. Majora's mask darkness was implied without directly showing it visually. What bugs me is that ppl try to make zelda something its not. If we gave zelda voice acting then the atmosphere would change. It would feel IMO like skyrim, and darksiders. Unless they can make it work perfectly(which VERY VERY few games can) then its not worth doing.
Ppl need to stop trying to make Zelda into something its not. There are "zelda like" games that have what many of what u dark zelda lovers are looking for. Darksider is a good example. Go play that, but dont try to make zelda into something its not. if u don't like the way zelda is then don;t play it. it's obviously not the game for u if u don;t agree with its style.

Zelda will no longer be Zelda if it adapts the "dark and mature" themes gamers think of.

Majora's Mask was more 'mature' then Uncharted, Killzone, Gears of War combined quite frankly.

That would be awesome, the new system would make bringing the Cell shaded graphic's even closer to looking like an anime, they could even use the old Zelda art style

Darker and more mature, yes. Basically go in the direction Twilight Princess went; it was a mature game but still had lots of charm. I'd say leave blood out still, unless they can find a way not to make it too big of a focus.

Most of this wouldn't have half the impact if it were a dark and "mature" series. Why does everyone feel the need to change the tone of Zelda?

Deeper combat? Yes and no, I don't want Dark Souls-like combat, it just needs to be slightly more challenging, combat isn't the star of the series. It needs, more importantly, better puzzles.

I don't want to get Zelda darker than it has already been. I want it to be darker than WindWaker and Skyward Sword. TP, MM, and OoT are all dark enough. And yes, they were dark and those examples I gave were proof of that, not exceptions to the rule. A game doesn't have to be drowning in sorrow and gore to be dark. Just inject some dark themes and realism.

As for combat, the series began its life with a heavy combat focus. I would love to see a return to its roots, being a combat focused game with puzzle elements mixed in rather than a puzzle based game with combat elements mixed in. Skyward Sword had some great combat with the wiimote and nunchuck. It definitely needs some fine tuning but it's the right path for the series. Also, more of that combat would be good. I liked the waves and waves of enemies at the end of SS. There were too few of them up till then.

No. When I want to play a game that's "dark and mature", I simply pick up one of the many, many games fitting that description not tittlted Zelda. When I want to play a game like Zelda, then my options become far more limited.

Zelda is a very diverse franchise. It cam be charming and cute (WIndWaker) or eerie and melancholic (Majora's Mask). Either style would work, all depending on what type of atmosphere they're aiming for. It shouldn't be dark just for the sake of being dark and appealing to adolescents though, only if it has a purpose.

Does it need to be more dark and mature? No. Does it need more depth? Well, does depth mean some meaningless rpg system that leads to mind numbingly boring grinding that results in minor changes in your character's performance? If so, no. Hell, combat isn't even really the focus of Zelda. Litterally, I'm not against more depth, it just needs to be well executed.

Why do people think that making a more mature story (or setting or character or whatever) means making it darker?

I did like Twilight Princess but it doesn't have to be dark and mature to have a more in depth combat system.. I think certain parts of the game should be dark but certain other areas should be bright and colorful.

They should just expand the world

Expand the characters in the world

Keep the rest the same

They also should keep twilight link

Bring back the wolf mode but expand on that

I was actually just using your post to be lazy and not type any of that myself, but I disagree with you. Zelda doesn't need to be darker than Wind Waker or Skyward Sword because they have those touches already that give you that unsettling, "dark" feeling of that soldier in Hyrule Castle Town. The games aren't dark, but they can have dark moments, which aren't necessary, but help push a connection to the world a lot of the time.

I also don't get where you acquired the notion that Zelda started out combat oriented, the overworld itself was a maze in the original. Zelda 2 is the only combat centered one.

In terms of mechanics, SS has one of the deepest combat systems I've seen in a 3D game. The boss fights are insanely satisfying and battling regular enemies is actually fun instead of feeling like a filler part of the game like in previous 3D Zelda games.

I don't like it when games are serious in tone so I disagree with that part too, I prefer gamey/happy games. "Epic" is fine sometimes and fit in the Zelda franchise, but I don't want it to be serious/dark.

Would be interesting to see a dark-fantasy story centered around a struggle between Dark Link and normal Link. Dark Link would be a demonic figure with a body of flames resembling Link, two red-blood eyes and a upside-down cross as its pupils.

I am tired of dark anything. We need light hearted games too. Zelda is still one of the games I can count on for feeling good. I just played mass effect 2 and 3 they are good games but they are bleak. I cannot only play games like that all the time. Link is no killer of people and it should stay that way.

We already had a 'dark mature' Zelda game - Darksiders. It was really angsty and cliche'd, and I'll be glad if Zelda doesn't go that route. Then again, we also had Majora's Mask, which was dark, complex, and possibly the best game in the entire series. More games like that would be awesome. Oh, and Skyward Sword's combat was actually really good, it was just underused. The sword-wielding bosses really made it shine (with some of the best sword fights I've ever seen in a game), but the others...not so much.
