I'd love to see Nintendo take the Zelda art direction in a princess mononoke, studio gibli inspired direction. That would be amazing. To have dark and mature atmosphere you pretty much have to have convincing graphics... Which is something Nintendo doesn't give a sh*t about.

In seriousness though, the combat and gameplay DO need updating big time, at least on the 3D format. It was one of the reasons why Skyward Sword disappointed me. At this point, I expect a more depth from an adventure game, especially from a series as old as Zelda.
Seriously, this is at least the second thread you've made on this topic today.
Second, It's just not Zelda without some kind of light feel to it. It may seem like it's a good idea now, but eventually Zelda will just become another action-adventure series everyone hates because it's doing something every other action-adventure series out there is doing. If you like the dark atmosphere, just stick with Majora, Twilight, and Link's Awakening.
Ocarina of Time was also very dark. There are lots of dark touches like the dying soldier and what happens to the townspeople in the future. The game descends into a lot of ugly, dark settings as well.zelda was never dark....what the hell SW posters be on?
the only "dark" zelda games was MM and that was subliminal dark with sadness and despair being its main theme
Mario1331
The next Zelda should be Similar to TP's graphical style, but with much better graphics, like The Witcher 2
It needs to:
All wrapped up in beautiful graphics, new features, and hopefully a musical instrument :P.

but its not a dark and mature series jus has a lot of dark underlying themes
It would be cool to see a new theme but I think TP will be as dark as it gets for Nintendo.shadowchronicleNope, that would be Majora's Mask.
If by "Dark and Mature" another game like Majora's Mask ..then sure.
Otherwise... No,the charming fairy tale tone that Zelda is known for should stay.
Deeper combat system? Yes that could be great to see in Zelda.
And I wouldn't mind a more darker and mature theme for Zelda if it were like Majora's Mask; not the shallow kind of "maturity" where Link beheads countless goblins or rips the guts out of gibdos or whatever.
Majora's Mask type of dark is fine. It's a Nintendo type of dark. We don't need the stereotypical kinda of dark atmosphere. Majora's mask darkness was implied without directly showing it visually. What bugs me is that ppl try to make zelda something its not. If we gave zelda voice acting then the atmosphere would change. It would feel IMO like skyrim, and darksiders. Unless they can make it work perfectly(which VERY VERY few games can) then its not worth doing.
Ppl need to stop trying to make Zelda into something its not. There are "zelda like" games that have what many of what u dark zelda lovers are looking for. Darksider is a good example. Go play that, but dont try to make zelda into something its not. if u don't like the way zelda is then don;t play it. it's obviously not the game for u if u don;t agree with its style.

That would be awesome, the new system would make bringing the Cell shaded graphic's even closer to looking like an anime, they could even use the old Zelda art style[QUOTE="parkurtommo"]

Most of this wouldn't have half the impact if it were a dark and "mature" series. Why does everyone feel the need to change the tone of Zelda?
Deeper combat? Yes and no, I don't want Dark Souls-like combat, it just needs to be slightly more challenging, combat isn't the star of the series. It needs, more importantly, better puzzles.

I don't want to get Zelda darker than it has already been. I want it to be darker than WindWaker and Skyward Sword. TP, MM, and OoT are all dark enough. And yes, they were dark and those examples I gave were proof of that, not exceptions to the rule. A game doesn't have to be drowning in sorrow and gore to be dark. Just inject some dark themes and realism.
As for combat, the series began its life with a heavy combat focus. I would love to see a return to its roots, being a combat focused game with puzzle elements mixed in rather than a puzzle based game with combat elements mixed in. Skyward Sword had some great combat with the wiimote and nunchuck. It definitely needs some fine tuning but it's the right path for the series. Also, more of that combat would be good. I liked the waves and waves of enemies at the end of SS. There were too few of them up till then.

I was actually just using your post to be lazy and not type any of that myself, but I disagree with you. Zelda doesn't need to be darker than Wind Waker or Skyward Sword because they have those touches already that give you that unsettling, "dark" feeling of that soldier in Hyrule Castle Town. The games aren't dark, but they can have dark moments, which aren't necessary, but help push a connection to the world a lot of the time.
I also don't get where you acquired the notion that Zelda started out combat oriented, the overworld itself was a maze in the original. Zelda 2 is the only combat centered one.
In terms of mechanics, SS has one of the deepest combat systems I've seen in a 3D game. The boss fights are insanely satisfying and battling regular enemies is actually fun instead of feeling like a filler part of the game like in previous 3D Zelda games.
I don't like it when games are serious in tone so I disagree with that part too, I prefer gamey/happy games. "Epic" is fine sometimes and fit in the Zelda franchise, but I don't want it to be serious/dark.
