usually when i make posts i end up making a huge rant that no one wants to read, so i'll let the pictures do the talking.

(why is that wooden barrel shining?)

so do you guys get my point? isn't this completely unnecessary? we need more texture detail and physics.

I hate the overused bloom effect. It's widely used to try to hide ugly textures.

If the light is bright, metal objects would have blinding lights. But in these games they put them on clothing and other things that would just have soft light. its really dumb.

why is it that most people think for a game to be next gen it has to be shiny and look like it was dipped in oil?

I so totally agree.

I'm a hermit and first noticed the damn thing on R6:Vegas, then on C&C3. Thought it was something in the settings. Then I realized that there wasn't a way to turn it off. Damn console ports. I miss the good ol' days of full graphical scalability. Bleah.

goblaa got to the comic before I could... :?

You should take a look at Crysis, that game is the true "next-generation" of graphics in video games. Console games are just catching up to what PC's started using a couple years ago.

The real world is a very bright place, in case you hadn't noticed. Games can't actually output very bright light (monitors are restricted to a very small range), so they use techniques like bloom to give the illusion of very bright colors.

I personally don't agree with the Gears picture there because the emulsion(sp I forgot b/c haven't played it forever) is an extremely bright ooze by itself. It doesn't really have bloom effect as the other games.

Oh god, yes,I hate bloom. Few games nowadays control it, most overdo it.

I think Killzone 2 looks pretty nice - and they limited it. Killzone 2 and Halo 2 are the only games I've noticed that have less bloom in them (excluding Wii games).

i hate it when devs overuse bloom effect but most of those games don't overuse it. the game that really go beyond the limit is GRAW, gears, PDZ, kameno, untold legends and vegas(alittle too much for my tast). the reason most of these games are xbox games is because 360 is capable of of big ass bloom effects i'm gald PS3 can't do that much

All of the human player models in Gears looked like ken dolls yet look at what everyone considers it to be(Yes I know the maps looked amazing. I hate the human character models).

I think Game developers have decided that bothering to make the games look real they've just decided to invent "realistic" effects to try to make their halfassed textures and models look better. After all if you can't see the models or textures from the over abundance of light you can't notice how bad they look can you?

that game actually looks better in motion and more realistic. a game like PDZ is probably more along the line of the ken doll thing, they look and move like dolls ;)

It happens more with cameras than it does with the human eye, and most games try to emulate a camera. Even then, bloom is just an approximation of light scattering and not an accurate simulation. It really does help games look more realistic, it just gets over-used sometimes to emphasize the fact that it is in fact being used. Or sometimes games over-use it to create a surrealistic atmosphere, like Heavenly Sword.

And also, plenty of games used bloom and glow effects last generation to create the illusion of brightness. Most didn't use do a full-screen bloom pass though, and therefore the glow was restricted to areas that the artists knew were going to be bright ahead of time (engine glow, fire, lasers, etc.).

I like HDR. Next gen is all about the lighting, HDR is the new improved lighting methods they use nowadays.

Take a game that has HDR and one without it and you will definitely notice the difference, the visual quality drop will be apparent.

Bloom is very simple and easy to do, the PS3 is more than capable of handling it.

You're making fun of something that's the result of developers using more advanced GPU's to create more realistic lighting effects. I don't understand why you're doing that, being your a well-known Wii supporter.

It seems that ever since prince of persia: the sands of time came out last gen, about every game has to overuse it. What gets me is that people say mercenaries 2 looks great, but its completly brown. At least gears of war and killzone 2 have some color to them. I made a post about this back when ghost recon 3 was announced, and people called me crazy. Now that about every game has it, its becoming quite a bit more apparent.

Oh snap.

Anyway, good graphics aren't just bright light effects or HDR or bloom, that's one of the many different factors that lead to a game looking good. All of those games use HDR/Bloom but they also have great character models, textures and other things.

If you stopped focusing on the lighting [which itself is actually pretty good, especially in motion] then you wouldn't have anything to complain about.
