SMG not the greatest game of all time?

Claiming something is the greatest is mearly subjective, it might not be the greatest to you but it might be the best to someone else. A platformer can never be the best game ever for me.

More self ownage on the platter. We are celebrating one of THE best games, one that is truly innovative, artistic and downright beautiful in both audio and visual departments. You used the word, "subjective." Think about that for a moment. "A real game coming out" is a subjective statement. Calling Wii games bad or not real games is subjective.

Bottom line, as of right now, Super Mario Galaxy is the most critically acclaimed game of all time. After all the dumb stuff lemmings have spouted about their uber long 5 hour games, I for one will be blasting SMG around on this forum until my fingers are worn out stubs from all the typing. I as well as all the other sheep here have taken more heat than anyone about game quality and all that stuff. The Wii has PLENTY of amazing games and now it has astounding critical backing to one, in a magnitude that hasn't been seen in years.

Like I said, first lemmings bragged about graphics and sales, then quality games became their soup of the day, now the best game is on the so called "last gen console." So, now reviews don't count? How do you consider it a quality game if you don't go by the review? According to the masses Mario Party 8 is a quality game!

So, if reviews don't make a quality game and sales don't make a quality game... what does? Whatever the 360 happens to have going in its favor at this particular moment in time? Sounds about right to me.

Its the highest rated game of all time, and in could be opinionated as the greatest game of all time. Just say it it up there with the greatest games of time..

Pity as i needed something to play. My pc died the very day Crysis was released, I bought the bleeding thing just for that game!!! Lucky i purchased COD4 what a game. Hopefully next week Mario will be mine.

It's a great game. If you're going to get all upset that a Nintendo game outscored ANOTHER Nintendo game on the all-time highest rated list on GR, then you've got real problems. Oh yeah and Metroid is 3! Smells like jealousy to me.

You know what's funny? When Ocarina of Time was released to rave reviews hailing it 'the best game ever', I'm betting a lot of people whinged that it was overrated, that review scores meant nothing, that it wasn't as good as *insert name of fantastic NES/SNES/Genesis/PSX game previously considered the best ever here*, etc. A decade later anyone who disagrees with its declared status is flamed to hell and back. After a few years I highly doubt it'll be any different for Galaxy. Just watch.Jagazaar

Well i can find alot of games i think is far better than Ocarina of time. I think score more tells its the best game for that genre which i can far easyer relate to. Also there is different platforms to consider. SMG being the best platformer of all time! yes i can see that. However you cant compare SMG with games like Deus Ex, GT, HL series, Warcraft etc. Dont think you can compare agross genres, at least not the very different ones.

Also while SMG proberly are gonna stay at the top at Gamerankings, the score is bound to drop when it gets more reviews.

I'd argue there's a difference between best game of all time and most critically acclaimed game of all time.

Why? Because most professional review sites do what GameSpot does, they rate games in their genre and on their systems.

For example, I feel a lack of online multiplayer means a game cannot be the best of all time, since it lacks the immense longevity a game attains from that. Super Mario Galaxy is not expected to have these things based on its genre and platform.

Gamerankings is simply the reviewers opinions, not law.

However, it is the closest we can get to getting a collective gathering of reviews from various sources to site their opinion on said-game. I will agree that it is a bit flawed, because while many agree without the help of GameRankings that OoT is the best game overall, if we were to go by GameRankings, that'd mean Metroid Prime is the pinnacle of gaming as we know it, since OoT only has 29 reviews while MP has 92. Obviously the less reviews there are, the higher the percentage is going to be for said-game(in this case SMG & OoT).

It's really about personal opinion. Some say Super Metroid is the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be. Although anyone is inclined to think so, it is just an opinion after all.
