Two GOTYs, two very different games yet they are one of the best examples of why Gameplay will always be first, two games with really shallow story telling.
are they really aliens? they don't come from space, but from the ground :O
Gears doesn't have a story. The whole deal with the resonator is over at the end of Act Three? You get past that? Foxhound Fox though, Sheep I take it.
"You are Marcus Fenix, here is a gun, go shoot some Locust and retrieve the resonator."
That's Gears' story. From what I understand of SMG, it has more than that and it's a Mario game.
foxhound_fox
Who would seriously vote SMG? At least Gears had a story. SMG is: Get some stars. Repeat. Repeat Again. Continue Repeating. Go rescue the Princess. End. Gears is: Save Delta Squad. Get Underground. Map the tunnels with the resonator. **** it didn't work. Find an alternative way to map the tunnels. Explore Marcus's old house. Find father's maps. Stop RAAM from hijacking the lightmass bomb. Kill RAAM. Put the bomb on target, arm it, and get the hell out of there. Destroy the Locust Hollow with the Lightmass Bomb. **** they aren't all dead. End.PapaJohn24
Agreed.

planet called sera isnt it?I don't recall much of a story in either game -- so going by characters I would SMG's is a lot more interestingKoalakommanderWas it their silent demeanour, their annoying sound effects, or their lifeless jagged look that attracted you to SMG's characters? I particularly loved the little stars who had such memorable lines as "Fill me up with orbs", and "I'm hungry". The work that went into those lines of text blows my mind. Bowser is up there for a voice-acting award with his performance. His "Muahahahaha" really sent chills down the spine. Gears of War characters had nothing on those of SMG. Hell, that's why they won "Best New Character" in the 2006 GOTY Awards on Gamespot.

Well I had more fun playing as a hilarious little plumber man than playing with a group of frat boys on steroids. Seriously, GeOW characters are just movie stereotypes put into a video game.

SMG:
Every 100 years a comet visit Hearth Kingdoom and a festival is held on its honor. Shortly after Mario is invited to the centennial Star Festival by Princess Peach, falling comets start destroying the festival, Bowser invades the Mushroom Kingdom with a surprise attack in a fleet of airships. Summoning a giant saucer, he rips Princess Peach's entire castle from its foundations and lifts it into outer space.
After an unsuccessful rescue attempt, Mario is catapulted across the cosmos by a Magikoopa and awakens on a small planet. On the planet he meets a mysterious woman called Rosalina and her companion stars, the Lumas. Rosalina is a watcher of the stars, who uses her mobile Observatory to travel across the universe. However, the Power Stars that act as the Observatory's power source have all been stolen by Bowser, rendering it immobile. Bestowed with the power to travel through space, Mario sets off on an intergalactic adventure across the universe to reclaim the Power Stars.
Luigi was lost in action trying to save the princess by himself but he's rescued by Mario. The toads, eager to help build an space ship and travel the universe too.
Upon collecting enough Power Stars, Rosalina's Observatory has enough power to transform into a comet and fly to the center of the universe, where Peach is held captive. Confronting Bowser, Mario learns that Bowser's plan is to rule the entire universe with Peach at his side, using a newly constructed sun of his own via the power of the Grand Stars. Mario manages to defeat Bowser and free Peach, but Bowser's sun collapses onto itself, becoming a supermassive black hole and consuming the universe. All of Rosalina's Lumas jump into the black hole to destroy it, but sacrifice themselves in the process. Rosalina (in god-like form) appears to Mario, stating that stars never die, but are later reborn as new stars. Mario awakens in the restored (but subtly altered) Mushroom Kingdom filled with partying characters and enemies, alongside Peach and Bowser, as Rosalina's voice tells them that they all, too, are made of the same material that stars come from. Mario welcomes the new galaxy that has emerged in the skies.
Gears: Aliens and humanity are at war, you fight em. End.
Gears story is so bad people don't realize it isn't on Earth.
Nice post loco. Show em how unfair there comparisons are.

i loved it how in gears every now and then they tried to throw things at you to make the story seem deep but just failed haha, like How they bring up how Marcus went to trial, then saying " His trial was a sham!!!! sir...", like o teh noes marcus has a dark past we dont know about going against the court system.
Bwahaha you fail so hard it is insane. If you could somehow pull that much from SMG then you could have done the exact same for Gears with no problem, but you chose not to because you either haven't played Gears or because you are a huge fanboy or both.I don't think you understood him.I can do the same.

Seriously both had paper thin storys, but which served to explain the awesome gameplay.
Pure Sci-Fi mastery. 'Power Stars', 'Magikoopa','Toads'--all pieces of a greater puzzle. An atmospheric trip for the senses.I can do the same.

Wow. That was a terrible comeback. Most Science-Fiction (of the action genre) includes guns. I don't see Humans suddenly deciding to stop using guns anytime in the near future. Most aliens in Science-Fiction (of the action genre) end up being remotely-humanoid. Multiracial--yes, we have that today. I thought America was the great melting pot? Buff men--say hello to the Unreal Engine. Super Advance Bomb--it is the future, and we have bombs in real life today. I can't see an observatory powered by handheld stars turning into a comet though.
You sure you played Gears? and whats wrong with that? It's done in a great way. Not every story needs 16h of cutscenes showing the biography of all even the most minor characters from day 1 on and exploring their psyche of the main character at any given moment. I didn't play GoW to listen to a philisophical (spelling?) debate but to watch a group of people kick some alien ass.
same with predator, I didn't watch it some 10 times to look for the meaning of life in a movie but to see schwarzernegger beating an alien to death.
Stories can be preaty straighforward and swallow but still be great and gears is one of them, there is no **** around with half a trillion twist but a straighforward war against a clear enemy and with a clear objective.

And luckily for us, our Super advanced bombs don't need to be train-delivered, because even a small comando armed with rambos explosive arrows and Ak-47 riding bikes would be able to stop it. But at least then our army doesn't consist on only 4 soldiers.

any game could be put like that.
uncharted - find treasure and kill bad guys after same treasure
gta4 - search for that someone, get revenge, help people helping you find this man and as a hitman for money.
mgs4 - defeat ocelot...
