Its now been more or less confirmed that Dark Souls will disable party chat. What are your thoughts?

My two cents. Not a big fan. This is a feature that I pay for with XBL gold. I don't think it should be the developers call to remove this. I know this will bring a flurry of posters crying about how the game is "meant" to be played. Sorry, but they're called games for a reason. They are entertainment, and players should get to decide how to approach the way they enjoy a game. I'm curious to know how SW feels about it.

I think it's hilarious. Funny that XBL gamers have to pay for that kind of stuff even when it's disabled in some games.

Up to this point, 2 games I believe. I'm guessing that it might have been a condition that From software requested. Personally, I don't find it hilarious, but a bit short-sighted on MS part. It is something that me and a lot of my friends use a lot. Heck, we used XBL party chat while we were playing demon's souls. Easy enough to work around with other means, obviously, but I definitely don't agree with it.

I did that too actually. You party chat on the 360(you don't even need gold if you're not in a game) and play on your PS3 on the same TV. Just switch inputs.

You'd understand if you knew that Demon's Souls wasn't on the 360.

We'd just set up party chat from the 360 dashboard and use it to communicate while we played Demon's Souls on the PS3.

Oh I see.

Well to answer your question that's a bummer. Though Not many of my friends are getting, or even heard of Demons Souls. I'll get it next year when it reaches the 40$ price mark.

You can use party chat if you play offline and you can also use private chat (2 people) while online in Dark Souls. Doesn't bother me but then I'm going with the PS3 version, but it still wouldn't bother me if I was going with 360 version since this type of game works well like that.

Unless you don't play it. Than it doesn't matter. You're not playing it. I'm not playing it. So it doesn't affect either of us, right?

This is the way the developers want you to play the game. I am sorry but you have to deal with the developers decision.

"players should get to decide how to approach the way they enjoy a game"

clone01

If you're vision is to make a game with multiple approaches, then yes I'd agree. However, I don't think that has to be THE vision driving your experience. You could just want to tell a good, but somewhat interactive story, recognizing that interactivity can enrich a story, but also recognizing the need for structure in any well told story. Or you could have a very clear set of emotions and reactions you want to trigger in your player, and giving the player too much freedom potentially DESTROYS that experience.

To liken it to Fine Art...some art let's you draw your own associations and some art hits you over the head with its message. Some art guides the veiwer, but insists on nothing. Some art is made to please and some art is not. Some art is strictly personal, and the viewer has nothing to do with the process aside from their own voyeurism. Some art tells a story and some art does not.

The relationship of artist to viewer, developer to player, musician to listener, or writer to reader should not have a single philosophy in my opinion, as almost every approach has yielded great work. If all creative processes can be likened to a desire to express something (even if that something is simply a reflection of a plurality of consumer's desires in order to maximize profit), which I think is pretty much the case, then we must accept that the BEST way to express a particular vision may not always be the most pleasant one for every bent at the moment.

Speaking strictly as a consumer the answer is no, I don't always want freedom to be at the core of my game-playing experience. I like variety, and not just variety of locale, characters, mechanics, and plot, but variety of direction and intention. Sometimes I want to explore and sometimes I want to be along for a good ride.

Very well thought out response. My only question is that the examples you've cited while valid, are fairly passive compared to a game.

They want you to feel alone in the world battling with the others. While the "others" always being strangers. But what does that have to do with talking with your friends? It's like they are saying we can't talk with the people in the room with you while you play DS

$60 a year is pennies bro. I own both a 360 and a ps3 and loved Demon's souls but I'm getting dark for the 360 simply because xbox live is so much better and so is the community

Try private chat. I know with CoD, SND will diable party chat but private chat is still avaliable. Of course you can only talk to one other person, but better than nothing.

Good luck chatting with your community while you play Dark Souls since party chat is disabled. Also, I'll enjoy my 1 or 2 extra games a year that you have to pay to play online for instead. Also, enjoy calling people "bro".

Didn't MW2 have party chat disabled in one of the modes? In anycase people should really quit the "but we paid $60" excuse..party chat isn't exclusive to gold members and im sure you can still private chat with your friends.

That's why it will never sell well. To the people that arnt familiar with Demon's souls, this game is anti-entertainment. I understand what From is trying to do with the whole throwing u into this world and not explaining anything, not being able to communicate, etc all while getting your ass handed to you constantly. I love it, but many wont

Yes, but Party chat should be universal. I'm just pointing out Finalstar's illogical summation of a service he apparently knows very little about.

My two cents. Not a big fan. This is a feature that I pay for with XBL gold. I don't think it should be the developers call to remove this. clone01

This is how the game is meant to be played, that is all

You cant party chat during an aliens movie, it would totally destroy the atmoshere, so why would it be different for one of the most core and atmsopsheric games of all time ?

I feel like they did the right thing 1000%, i dont want my game destroyed by chatting and destroying any immersion

Just jump on private chat you know the chat that lets you chat with another person I've yet to see a game disable that.

While I don't see the point of using party chat while playing a game like this, I do think it's lame that they disable it all together when people actually pay for the service. It's the principle of the matter more than anything.

First of all I think it's important to note that Dark Souls isn't 'entertainment' -- it's more like self-flagellation bordering on masochism... would you really want to involve your friends in such a pursuit? I think not...

You cant party chat during an aliens movie, it would totally destroy the atmoshere, so why would it be different for one of the most core and atmsopsheric games of all time ?

I feel like they did the right thing 1000%, i dont want my game destroyed by chatting and destroying any immersion

Thanks Saolin/Obamanian/Dark Ancient/loosingENDS. Now I understand.

[QUOTE="DragonfireXZ95"][QUOTE="BodyElite"] $60 a year is pennies bro. I own both a 360 and a ps3 and loved Demon's souls but I'm getting dark for the 360 simply because xbox live is so much better and so is the communityjjccjj92

Good luck chatting with your community while you play Dark Souls since party chat is disabled. Also, I'll enjoy my 1 or 2 extra games a year that you have to pay to play online for instead. Also, enjoy calling people "bro".

Did somebody piss in your cherrios this morning or are you still angry that Dark Souls went to 360?

The only difference between the two versions is that the 360 version has a superior online service, so PS3 fanboys are trying to nitpick their way through each xbox live feature to try and bring the version back down to the ps3 version's level

meanwhile on the ps3, you don't have the option at all. You can still do private chat on XBL.

Exactly

You also don't have to pay for it. ZING.

But why not give people the option? If you don't want to use it then don't! As I've said before, what's to stop me from talking to my friends that are sitting beside me in my room while I play? It's the same thing... From Software doesn't like money I guess, because they definitely won't be selling too many copies

If you complain over $5 per month, maybe it's time to find a better job

Your supposed to be scared in Dark Souls and your not going to be if your shouting swear words at your buddy and talking about what could be around the next corner.

When did I ever complain about it? I don't pay for it. Why would I waste my money on that when I have an awesome PC and a PS3, both of which I can play online for free?

It's not that it's expensive, it's about spending your money wisely. I don't think I need a better job if I have a 1200 dollar computer, and I'm fairly sure I spent more money for it than your 360 and your games combined.

Maybe they value giving a proper immersive experience more than sales and i am with them

Money is not everything, if people play with chat the game will be nothing like it is supposed to be played and a far inferior experience

and destroying their game like that will make them loose status and this is far more important, they just want people to get the real DS experience, which is not a party chat session, but a real hardcore game
