So after four main entries, the MGS series is still terrible.

I don't think we have ever witnessed a game series achieve such a big fanbase, despite having horrendous gameplay that is completely inferior to the competition. Yet each Metal Gear Solid game has got away with its horrible gameplay because of the big storylines, which themselves are overly convoluted. Is it really fair that a series can get away with some of the worst gameplay in existence as long as the storyline is good (according to its fans)?Discuss.

That's your opinion. The gameplay doesn't appeal to everyone (obviously) and if you don't understand the story... that's on you. :lol:

I think the games are fun, but I agree the gameplay isn't great, it's supposed to be a stealth game but I always found it impossible to play stealthily, especially in the 3rd one. Or maybe that's the reason everyone says it takes them so long to complete, because they actually bother to stand at walls watching guards patrolling until they can finally sneak out and grab them. Fine by me, but I like my games fast, I don't want to stand next to a wall for 2 minutes waiting for a guard to turn his back...

That's not true, I have about 4 friends that always acknowledged the series, but would never play it. They all LOVE MGS4, but refuse to play MGS1-3 because they felt it was too awkward back then. Funny thing is, they all at different times tried to tell ME that it was a great game, as if I didn't know.lol.

GOTY at multiple sites, and MANY, MANY critics acknowledge that this game pulled them in where previous MGS did not. Read some reviews, that's statement is just false.

Not a MGS fan, don't like shooters, But MGS4 is my favourite game.

You didn't tell us what You didn't like about this series in Your first post, so i can't really comment on this...
Actually i thought the story to be horrible because it is so convoluted. I'm going through MGS4 right now and fully finished the original. The gameplay in these two doesn't look bad at all. The series has a quality that i miss in almost every other game these past generations: they play with the player. The surprise, the unexpected awesome. It gives You the feeling that whatever will be around that corner, it's going to be thought through, it's going to be cool. Something that is missing in (almost?) every open world game, the genre that is so popular these days.
Presentation is good, camwork is great, the setting, the background is awesome. ID tagged guns have made an entrance in reallife now. So has nano-camouflage and the increased usage of mercenaries to fight our wars. There's a lot of things in the game that i recognise happening around me, serious things. But the game doesn't become too serious at all, it has lots of facepalm humour in it.
AI could have been better at times (sometimes it repeats itself too much or goes blind) but the enemy does make some unexpected smart moves (the scripting is great). Are the controls bad? I'm new to that dualshock thing but i'm doing decent... i just don't know the CQC moves and a few of the rolls.
The only serious complaint i could expect is the cutscene length and the story.

You ever thought that maybe you are just in a minority (which isn't a bad thing) of people who just don't like the game? Why bash the many other people who do? Makes no sense.

I thought MGS3 sucked due the the player handicap and the declined production values after 2. Also, the constant breaking the gameplay to switch camo. 1,2,4 however were a blast.

Revolutionary? please explain how to the MGS games are "revolutionary".

Well my way of defining revolutionary is creating something never been done before, something new and amazing... Name one title that did what MGS1 did, as well as it did it, before it came out?!

The series evolved from that point, I believe that's what makes it revolutionary - friend :)
