OPM has given it a 5 and GameInformer gave it a 6.75. This is very heart breaking as it was one of my more anticipated games this year
I'll still buy it, but not at full price.

If you think it's going to be great, you shouldn't let others sway your opinion. Maybe a rental at least?
In the first game platforming was kinda "Ugh" and combat...was mainly running around using projectile weapons. But what really made the game great was the environment and characters.
It seemed Madness Returns would see the...return of the good and improvment of the bad. Seeing as I'm still interested in this game I'll still be waiting for the reviews sites I pay attention to. If not I'll wait for a price drop.:P
Hmm well that's interesting and all, but what didn't they like about it?
Never played the original, but people say that the art-style and atmosphere is enough to carry the game through. If this is the case here, I'd play it.
Apparently it has too many puzzles. Kind of a stupid thing to knock a game for.

Well, isn't it a game based around puzzles? That would be kind of like knocking a shooter for having too much shooting.DON'T GO TO GAMEINFORMER FOR REVIEWS!
You may go Ooooh or Aaaaah at them but DON'T TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY.

Isn't Alice supposed to be a Puzzle game though?

I thought the gameplay looked totally generic and outdated the second I saw a video of it so I'm not surprised.OPM has given it a 5 and GameInformer gave it a 6.75. This is very heart breaking as it was one of my more anticipated games this year

Well, isn't it a game based around puzzles? That would be kind of like knocking a shooter for having too much shooting.Well yeah, if there was a shooter in which you did absolutely nothing except shooting, and the entire game consisted of holding down the right trigger/left mouse button until you're allowed to progress, it would be justly criticized for that.
...Oh wait.

But, seriously, that seems a mite silly.

I don't see what that has to do about anything.
I just didn't know people where hyping this...It's a shame, i was hyped for it, still gonna get it, that's for sure, but maybe not day 1, besides, we have yet to see GS score, it seems that Kevin V is making the review and he is a huge fan of the original.

Since when has the internet been %100 dedicated to focusing on the topic at hand?:PBut, seriously, that seems a mite silly.DarkLink77Do you have the mag? I'd think the actual complaint is a bit more substantial than "there's too many puzzles".

I just didn't know people where hyping this...Well, if you didn't know the game, then of course you didn't know people where hyping it, which is kind of weird since GS has been having a lot of advs for the game.
It was the atmosphere, environments, and story I was looking forward to most, so perhaps if it's really just the gameplay that ends up being crap, I may still pick it up early. Gotta read more reviews.

But then we're talking about print reviews, which are usually pretty absurd in the first place. I'll wait to hear what GB says about it. If it's not actively bad, then I'll rent it just for the presentation. And dat hair.

The hair is quite cool, hair king! but, the physx implimentation isn't cool at all... :(

Dat hair. But for serious, print reviews, especiall in rags like OPM and GI are pretty terrible. I'll wait to see what GS, GB, 1up, and Gamespy say.
The alice games are a great example of a good idea in the wrong medium. They are NOT good games. Controls are awkward, combat is shallow, and the puzzles feel tacked on. But, the characters, story, and setting are wonderful.
Simply put, they shouldn't be games. There's no reason for it. If you have a great idea for a setting/story, but can't make a fun game...then make a great movie/book/comic istead.
I think Platinum should do gameplay for all melee combat games, or that every dev should just flat out copy them  Would fix that up nicely. It's too bad that it'll be shallow, never expected much of it, but it'd be nice if it weren't. I do think he (American McGee) does fit better for movies 'n such... Then again, most RPG's completely ignore gameplay too...The alice games are a great example of a good idea in the wrong medium. They are NOT good games. I'm watching some of a walkthrough of Alice:MR on youtube and it still looks incredibly good, despite the mediocre reviews. It's dripping with dark atmosphere and ambiance, which I love. Music, Graphics, and voice acting all look top notch. I may just have to pull a "Nier" on this one and ignore the reviews.
Here's the walkthrough if you wish to see it (SPOILERS, obviously) - http://www.youtube.com/user/ILLZEBRAlol#p/u/25/o8OM68THkt8
I was going to buy it but the OPM review worried me, so I cancelled my pre order. Later that week my girlfriend heard about it and she pre ordered it. It will go into my collection, so I'm basically still getting it. Hope it's good.
EDIT: Some games can't be judged on their review scores. I've had tons of enjoyment with games below 5!

I never played the original, but I disagree.
All I see here is a case of taking Lewis Carroll's work and giving it a dark edge. The first game is praised for having awesome atmosphere, due in part because of the art style of the world and creative level design. It's gameplay isn't its strong point. Why is this not a good example of a decent game?
Games don't just have to have great gameplay to be a successful and immersive experience. You're getting into territory of what should make games, games. To me, games is the concept of creating a virtual world and having the player experience what it offers. Games are evolving beyond their old definitions of the arcade games.
Give me a good level design team, and I don't see why the universe of Alice cannot be made into a successful experience, or why it shouldn't be interesting to explore it within a virtual environment.
I'd much rather explore the absolutely mad like world Lewis created in a virtual world, than see it in a Tim Burton movie--I guess it's a matter of opinion.
