Developers are leaving the PSP in droves. It's as simple as that, and next gen I can only forsee an outcome where Sony gets slaughtered as hard as they did when the iPod came out in competition with Sony's line of music players. Nobody goes around calling music players "Walkman" anymore

fend_oblivion

Not exactly. Ready At Dawn is returning to make God of War : Ghost of Sparta, Valkyria Chronicles has its sequel made on the PSP instead of the PS3, Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep which has been highly rated is coming out and the success of Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker in Japan and the potential success it will have in other countries is so high that Konami is thinking of porting it on the PS3.

Not to mention, E3 has yet to show new releases. Who knows? A better Assassin's Creed game? or maybe a new Uncharted game (devs said they'd love to make episodical adventures of Uncharted on the PSP.

I'm pretty optimistic about the PSP. Sure, it may not have enough games as the DS or its number of AAA titles on Metacritic, but it's a great system.

Also, the Digital Comics for the PSP has begun and is doing pretty damn well.

And as for being slaughtered, it managed to sell 60 million despite having a juggernaut of a rival called the DS. That just shows how the PSP can hold its ground. Apple will never be a gaming company like the Big 3 (Nintendo,Sony and Microsoft) and what they are trying to pull off is a lazy attempt to make more cash.

The games you mentioned, one of which is a Sony IP, and the other are exactly the type from the example I gave. The KH fanbase and the MGS fanbase are part of the Playstation fanbase. These people will be there to buy these games on the PSP. These consumers don't own a Nintendo DS waiting every day for the next Metal Gear game to come out.

Assassin's Creed was garbage on the handhelds, so better wouldn't be too hard. Uncharted - ANOTHER SONY IP

And like I said. That 60 million comes from brand power alone. The system is obviously not selling software. Think about it. Which MMO gets more subscribers daily than any other MMO. WoW? Why? Because everyone knows WoW, and will jump onto that. Why have people bought iPods over the years when other devices have the same features and a lower price point? Brand power. Why do people buy the Wii when so many people think it has bad games? Brand power.

Any random person on the street is likely to know what a Wii is, what an iPod is, and what WoW is. They are now at a point when they actually become more popular just by existing because their names are buzz words everywhere you go. 5 years ago you couldn't meet someone that didn't know what a Playstation was. That didn't immediately die off with the PSP release did it? People still know what the Playstation is.

As said. PSP isn't selling software. I'm specifically referring to the fact that the PSP is being slaughtered in this department. Like I said the iPhone overtook it in ONE YEAR, and the DS has 700% the software sales the PSP does. I'm very firm in my belief that come next gen of handhelds the PSP is going to go the way of the Walkman. Sony still makes MP3 players, but they have abysmal sales, and nobody cares about them. They'll probably just turn the PSP into a phone, and that'll be the end of that too. Nobody will care for it beyond that point.

Choosing the iPhone/iTouch over a PSP or DS for games is idiocy. That's all I'm gonna say.

It being a phone is part of the problem as well. Contracts and frequent upgrades will keep it from succeeding as a gaming platform. Nintendo and Sony have supported a consistent device for over 5 years. The chances of apple settling on a tech for the games is EXTREMELY slim. You really think Apple will have a mobile phone/game platform that remains static for years? Look what happened to SEga--people LOVED the Master System and Genesis, and then they released update after update and people eventually lost faith. The saturn and dreamcast failed because of this. I wont deny that Apple is the "it" name at teh moment, but so was sega back at that time.

And the problem is they really can't settle on a standard, because the biggest initial buyers are the tech savy and business types that WANT, and don't mind, upgrading every 8 months. The mobile game and techie market is a split one.

Heirren

8 months? You know nothing about iPhone OS (name of this platfrom)....i got 3 years old iPod touch and still i can play leastest AppStore games, you think Apple is damp to kill semi-open platfrom every 8 months?

You need to realize that 95% of these games on the iPhone/iPod are crap games or are very simple and short. The amount of quality games on Apple devices are small compared to what the DS and PSP offer. The only reason why Nintendo and Sony are taking notice is that Apple is getting quite a bit of money from a new kind of market, the really casual players that play very simple games for 5 minutes at a time.... Apple isn't competing with Nintendo or Sony...

They buy it for apps. Games fit into that category. Nobody likes to have to carry around a phone, and a PSP on top of their wallet, keys, etc. The majority consumer base has, for decades, been looking for portability in their handheld devices. Cassettes turned to CDs turned to MP3's. Bricks turned into flip phones, and now to smart phones that do everything. Everything, including the occassional game here and there.

It doesn't matter if the games suck. The fact is that people are buying it, and spending more money on the games than elsewhere. You think Nintendo would openly admit Apple is the one they're worried about? Nintendo is the juggernaut of this industry. Nintendo knows Apple's business model is absolutely genius compared to their other competition.

I think that the fact that all of these companys are trying new things to keep the industry moving forward is a great thing. As far as apple taking over the game industry i dont know. The ipad looks like a cool device but it wasnt exactly designed for games only.Sony, nintendo, microsoft and pc have a strangle hold on the game industry and its gonna be hard for anybody else to enter that arena and be successful right now.Not saying its impossible, only saying its difficult when all the other companys have big followings. The game industry is crouded as it is and another company jumping in the battle is real iffy.

Well, Nintendo is a toy company, so I guess you're right to feel that way :P

That's bs, because I have an iphone that is 7 months old and the processor intensive apps don't run nearly as well as on newer models.

The iPhone is not as good as dedicated handheld gaming machines (obviously), but the major strength is that my iPhone is ALWAYS with me wherever I go. I don't always carry my PSP or DS everywhere, but my iPhone is.

Right, anyone with sense knows that.

But consumers want a portable all-in-one system. Apple's the best in the market atm. I really hope that pushes Nintendo to include a bunch of multimedia features in their next handheld, and make a proper, and decent online app store.

But even the PSP can be used as in all in one machine. It can use Skype, the internet, comics (Sony just released a bunch of Spiderman digital comics), games, music, movies - which I think is more than enough with a 32 GB memory stick. For the price, I think a PSP is much more cost efficient than an iPhone or iTouch.

Most people I know fill their Apple products to the maximum capacity and rarely watch any of the movies or listen to most of the songs on it.

Man this TC has an extreme hardon for apple...all his posts are about how the Ipod touch is the next big gaming handheld when it cant even hold a flame to the old barcode Tiger handhelds...

touch screen controls = FAIL. Move along man...move along.

fend_oblivion

They are making a peripheral because the touch screen controls are poor. And guess what? You have to pay for it too.

Link

Yes I am well aware but thats still a fail. It takes some of the portability out of it. Not 80%, not 90%, but 100% of people who BUY Ipods buy them for MUSIC PLAYING...thats it. I have a PSP, a DS and a 16gb Itouch. It doesnt leave my car because I have it running through my AVID Pioneer system. Its good for a few mini games and some video and MUSIC. Thats it. I bought about 10 games for it but 8 of them are complete garbage with touchscreen controls. I have a few RPG's, Price is right, super monkey ball (which is annoying because the TILT feature is crap on the ipod). Its a gimmick...I would LOVE for it to actually compete, but until apple announces an ACTUAL gaming handheld, something that looks or feels like a PSP or DS (full control scheme, though out layout etc), its going to always take a backseat to the Primary two. Plus all games are 3rd party...People who buy a DS buy it for the first party games, same goes for the PSP... a lot of the games are made for the PSP (sony) which is why I own it. If I cant have MLB 10 the show on my Ipod touch, I dont even consider it.

LOL, nice. When a game like Uncharted 2 or Halo: Reach appears on the iPad that reaches the same levels of awesomeness, then I will consider them a rival. I love my ipod touch and I use it as a handheld for gaming, sure but there is nothing on that platform that compares to God of War: Coo on PSP or Legends of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass on the DS.

Apple has the potential to do a very nasty disruption in the gaming industry if this is what their aiming for. Most gamers were all laughing at the oddity that is the Wii and guess how that turned out?

Apple will buy all three companies and make their own consoles, that will compete with each other. Macs will rule over the PC, and Steve Jobs will be president of the United States of Apple. It will happen, watch this. 2 or 3 years tops.

If I was the president of Sony Computer Entertainment, how would an iPad scare me? PS3 and 360 are made to play video games + more but the iPads arent, video gaming we're just added. I dont see how its a threat to Sony or to Microsoft. As an Mp3 player or laptop sure. but as a video gaming device?

When Apple takes games serious I will take Apple products as gaming devices serious.

Arguing that the IPhone is better than the DS and PSP simply because it has more apps on it doesn't really give me confidence.
