Just curious, i've been following the somwhat old news of the SSD being a fraud....but i haven't seen any solid confirmation, apparently rachet and clank runs just as good on PC...so can someone tell me if the SSD in the PS5 is just a marketing ploy...thanks!?

Sony marketed a fast ssd. And that's what the ps5 has. Of course they hyped it up since it's the first time consoles have had a ssd. No lies, just marketing.

Good old marketing spiel. Been like that since marketing was a thing.

Didn’t you have a similarly named account before? What happened?

The SSD is alien tech and no one can fully comprehend the power it holds. It may have unlimited power and Sony may never need to make another console again.

Ask yourself this ... if they were lying, why did Xbox also come to the conclusion of using an SSD?

Xbox and, PlayStation both had to either choose tons of RAM or build a faster and more efficient IO architecture. They both chose to improve their IO.

I think they said no loading times? They did lie, sure.

That being said, SSD is my favorite thing about these new consoles. Playing last gen games is so terrible.

But isn't sony suppose to have some improved SSD...over the xbox's one, etc? So far from what i can tell it was a lie...but then again...the PS5 did come out almost 3 years ago......

@fastnslowww:

I mean they picked a faster one but, that doesn't make it exotic. You can add on a standard NVMe to your PS5 no problem.

They didn't lie, they massaged the truth.

Seriously though, it's just an SSD. They've been around for quite a few years. The real question is why haven't consoles been using them until now?

When you have absolutely nothing inside your system worth talking about, and have no legendary launch titles, you gotta hype what you can, and this time around it was the storage device. Be glad it wasn't a bluray player.

SSD gives faster loading. That's not a lie. I load my PC games from SSD. It's faster than loading from HDD.

Sony didn't lie. They exaggerated. That's how marketing works.

@fastnslowww: I was told the ssd is so amazing that it even increases the size of the bandwidth for the vector gpu pipeline, increasing the tflops to plops. Yes, the ssd improves graphics performance according to the cows, and sony. They are lying frauds and I'm surprised no one launched a class action yet, especially considering this is the US, the most litigious country in history.

@last_lap:

How about you go back and watch the "Road to PS5" and actually see and hear what Mark Cerny presented.

The whole "no load screens" comes up during a segment literally called ... "Dream of the SSD". The whole point, which he spends seveal minutes on, is to remove *potential* barriers in game design. He even gives several examples of it.

I'll leave you with this quote:

"you can move through worlds without waiting for screens to load."

Sony said that right? Wrong!

^ This was in the very first video re: Series X (Project Scarlett) back in 2019.

You (and others) won't keep the same energy re: others. If you want to throw around criticism then start throwing it around equally.

Xbox lied. NVIDIA lied. AMD lied. Sony lied. Epic Games lied. The list goes on I guess.

@Nonstop-Madness: Yes they all lie, but this isn't about everyone else. The OP asked if Sony lied about load screens and they did.

If you want to make a thread about others lying go right ahead, and if they too are lying I will say so.

Your problem is that you didn't admit it, and your first post was to bring Xbox into it.

It's classic SW deflection. You would have been best served not posting anything at all.

They exaggerated, but at least it was something that existed and was faster than the competiton.

I have seen worse like "blast processing", that was basically marketing with zero base.

And " the power of the cloud" that implied Microsoft would he able to use server based GPUs to increase the speed of privately owned xboxs. (Which of course didn't happened)

This is system wars. Xbox and any other console can be brought into the conversation if the topic can be applied to those also. This isn't PlayStation forum where only one console can be talked about at a time. That said, I don't know exactly what Sony said, but I doubt they guaranteed no loading times.

I wouldn't say Sony lied about it, they clearly underestimate what the SSD can/cannot do and truth be told, nobody's perfect. Sony, MS, & Nintendo tend to underestimate their own product.

They did lied about it.

It was hyped to the moon and back.

Then it all stopped when videos started to shop that the series x was capable of loading games almost the same.

Only difference was that Microsoft didn’t act like it was Alien technology or hype like it was the second coming of Jesus

Every new gen console manufacturers will lie to you. It's wrong and those who defend it are suckers but it won't change. Sony particularly will always come up with some BS like the emotion engine, it's part of their marketing strategy to sell the idea to the general public that they're going to buy a super computer.

@uitravioience: Well, I remember Mark Cerney saying it would be instant and would change the way levels were designed, because they could instant load everything.

I’ve heard a lot of developers praise it, but still haven’t seen anything live up to the hype.

So far I’ve just seen games load faster than they would from a hdd.

Did Xbox marketed SSD as their main selling point by having a ~1hour session dedicated to it in the primary reveal? Did they put out the 100X processing improvement over PS4 number based just on SSD? Did they say PS5 will enable a fundamental design change in game design with no loading/slow crawling/onrails segements whatsoever where assets can be loaded and rendered as the camera is turning?

Forget Xbox or MS. Which other company in the world other than Sony made these claims?

@pc_rocks:

Can you keep straight face and say "Velocity Architecture" wasn't a main selling point of the Xbox? That thing that has its own fancy name and logo slapped right on the front of every Series box?

Sony presented the SSD in their reveal presentation and their the villains yet Xbox goes around parading Velocity Architecture at professional events like HotChips, multiple hardware reveal videos with YouTube personalities, saying the same things like "no load screens" etc. and they get the pass? Cmon.

I don't think Sony lied about the SSD. Compared to last-gen systems, the speed allows devs to do incredible stuff. But also, PCs have had this for ages.
