If you are talking sales then I don't think tied for second or possibly third place means winner. If you are talking game library....then that is subjective. And reviews haven't anything to do with what individuals enjoy. Therefore, you can't really play the opinion card.

If you are talking product viability....then no. MS had the most hardware failures.

Had the largest overall library of quality titles, excellent online, split screen support for its biggest games, a great controller, better multiplats, fantastic exclusives, and a wealth of other things to explore. It also defined the opposition's, that being Sony, moveset and choices for a long time, no small feat.

I'm personally a PS3 guy thanks to free online, but I would have been absolutely fine going with a 360 last gen only. Hell, I almost wish I did so I could have saved a lot of money.

The thing in bold is not a fact, its a subjective opinion. And dont come with metascores. All reviews are subjective. Slightly better graphics? Thats also not a fact. Sure it had better multiplats but when it comes to exclusives the PS3 ones had the upper hand. And 3rd, a better online service is barely a reason to win a generation or the original Xbox had won the generation before, but no.

360 had more high rated games overall than the other two systems actually, the wii may have won in exclusives and sales but the 360 beat both the other consoles with a higher rated overall library.

And again, reviews are nothing more than subjective opinions but if you wanna go there, then I'll just say the x360 has 0 exclusives equal or above 95 on meta while the PS3 has 3. The PS3 also has more GOTY awarded exclusives. When it comes to actual exclusives the PS3 also has more above the 90 mark than all the other consoles.

a few more indies and a couple of first gen games from the 360's year head-start. Is that something to brag about when the console has been dead for a while now? I mean, Perfect Dark Zero was a terrible game yet it has an 80/100 meta... Who in their right mind would buy a 360 to play a shitty game like that just because of its obviously overrated meta?

nobodys bragging, just pointing out a fact, the 360 has more 80+ rated games than the other two systems and how has the console been dead for a while? please explain because i am quite happily playing watchdogs on mine and i recently picked up Fable anniversary, there are still plenty of games to be released on both the Ps3 and the 360.

The PC clearly won last generation because it had more quality exclusive games than all three consoles combined. In terms of consoles, the Wii was in the lead for the exclusives for a long while until it died in 2012, with the Xbox 360 extremely close in that until it rather died in 2013. PS3 was lucky to have made a comeback in 2013 and finally pass the other two consoles with its quality exclusive retail count.

(Assuming we're ignoring downloadable games, the cows are now shifting towards loving indie download games so I never know whether to count them or not, and if we do count them, then the Xbox 360 did win last generation on the console front)

You could say the same thing about certain games on the Ps3 list as well, and perfect dark wasn't terrible at all, i thoroughly enjoyed playing it and in my opinion it deserves it's 80 score.

Because there are so many points to choose from when most are subjective, thats why sales has been the only one factual point to see who won the gen and last gen the Wii did. 360 arcade and indy games were really good, most of games collection were those.

The ps3 controller sucking stopped me playing it that much as the ps3 controller cripples my hands after an hour or 2.

Sure, reviews are opinions, but it happens i have the same opinion (just for the record, going by gamespot, 360 has 729 A+ games and PS3 has 576. In metacritic 360 has 928 and PS3 has 812). As for the better graphics and performance, its a fact 360 was the most balanced console in terms of hardware. It actualy had the same hardware advantages PS4 has (RAM and GPU), against the subjective advantages of PS3 and Xbox One (Cell and cloud).

Of the 3 systems I only have the ps3. I've played many great games on it, had a great time, and hope it'll last me for many more years. So for me, the ps3 'won' the 7th gen. That magic feel you described is you simply having a fun time with the system because you like it and it's games so you get attached to it. If the console you own can provide that magic feel then that's all that matter, no?

Reviews are not objective. They are subjective. Opinions man....everyone has them. Anyway you'd have to use only the scores for first party games to make an accurate comparison. But I still don't think using opinions...ie reviews says much. You can form your own opinion if you are familiar enough with all consoles and most games.....still doesn't make it fact....but it would be YOUR reason.

The only worthwhile aspect of reviews is seeing if the game is broken or not. Other than that.....individual interests dude.

it's a moot point really because none of the 3 consoles have won anything yet because the 7th gen isn't over yet, both the 360 and Ps3 are still being produced and sold and Both are less than 20 mil behind the Wii, i have a strong feeling the Ps3 will come in first in sales when all is said and done because i expect SONY to support the Ps3 longer than MS will support the 360 and nintendo have already dropped wii support, thats just my opinion though.

The Xbox 360 came in last place despite:

* Being rushed out the door a year/year and half early in a desperate attempt to pad out installed base numbers

* 200 dollars cheaper than the PS3

* Tens of millions of duplicate consoles sold thanks to the RRoD fiasco, disc scratching/destroying drives, etc.

All that and the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 every single year on the market and easily dumped the Xbox 360 into last place.

Microsoft spent the last three years doing a spectacularly bad job of trying to turn the Xbox into some sort of casual soccer mom megahit like the Wii leaving Xbox 360 owners with almost nothing to play as the console faded into last place in worldwide installed base.

The Wii obviously won the first three years and then dropped like a rock. The PS3 went on to be the worldwide leader in sales for the rest of the generation until the PS4 took over the crown.

Microsoft is now 0/3 in the console market with three straight failures.

It is hilarious in a sad and pathetic way that the single bright spot in Microsoft's entire fourteen year long Xbox trainwreck was the RRoD massively inflating their installed base numbers.

How did it come last? last i heard PS3 and 360 where tied in sales despite the Fact the 360 hit 80 million sold about 3 weeks before the Ps3

Ps3=80 million as of nov 2nd 2013

360=83.7 million as of march 31st 2014

unfortunately wikipedia only lists Ps3 sales up to Nov last year so we don't know if it has sold more than the 360 to this datebut as the PS3 actually outsold the Ps4 in japan who knows, better just to call it even in my opinion

Besides, 7th gen ain't over yet, i expect the Ps3 to overtake the Wii into first place by the time all is said and done.
