http://www.gamespot.com/news/6168040.html?action=convert&om_clk=latestnews&tag=latestnews;title;3

The crowds may have been quiet at midnight launch events last week, but Sony's PlayStation 3 still seems to have made an impact on Australian consumers over the weekend--a A$25 million impact, to be precise.

Sony Computer Entertainment Australia (SCEA) has told GameSpot AU that more than A$25 million worth of PS3 hardware, games and accessories have been sold in the three days since the console's launch last Friday, March 23. SCEA had previously stated that A$20 million worth of PS3 gear had been pre-ordered prior to launch.

The PS3 looks unlikely to break Australian records when it comes to fastest-selling console by units sold, however. While SCEA has not disclosed the exact number, a spokesman did confirm to GameSpot AU that the number of PS3s sold so far has "exceeded the previously published pre-order number of 20,000 units."

At more than 20,000 units in the first three days, the PS3 looks unlikely to challenge the Nintendo Wii for the title of fastest-seller in Australia. Figures from data trackers GfK Australia show that the Wii sold 32,901 units in its first four days after launch. The previous record holder was the Xbox 360, which sold 30,421 units in its first four days of availability. Before the 360, Sony's PSP was king with 27,055 units sold in the first four days. While the PS3 won't break the Wii's record, Sony's console does have the disadvantage of being more than double the price of the Wii in Australia. The PS3 retails for A$999.95 ($805), while Wiis will set consumers back A$399.95 ($322). The top Xbox 360 bundle costs A$649.95 ($523) in Australia.

Sony's A$25 million haul for the PS3 also falls short of Microsoft's take for the Xbox 360 when it first released in Australia last year. At the time, Microsoft stated that it had sold between A$30 and A$40 million worth of consoles and games at launch. The Xbox 360 was released in Australia on March 23, 2006--exactly one year before the PS3.

And all this is done without the holdiay season push.  Its like I expected, the midnight launch was empty because people already had their systems bought.  Who wants to camp and skip school and work for an item already payed for and is guaranteed to be there thanx to great supply.

It's done surprisingly well down here (not one ad but they manage to sell like crazy  )...

It just means there won't be a price drop anytime soon but I really want a PS3, it's just too expensive right now. Hopefully they have a nice deal when GTAIV/KZ are out.

Do people really need to play games in Australia? I mean, they have crap like scuba diving and...... the opera..... Not to mention all those dingos that are hurtin' for a shootin'. I mean, that's like an FPS right there.

Unfortunatly, Sony has said no price drop is planned until around 2009 :(

Speak for yourself. Anyway I don't think Australia is really that important when it comes to sales, in the context of system wars. It's important for anyone that lives here but I don't think any console will do so badly that find games for the system will be hard.

I know, I was being facetious. You guys aren't allowed firearms, aren't you? I guess that's why the 360 did so well over there: First Person Shooters.

Yes I still think PS3 flopped in Australia and those figures back up my argument. Only a fanboy would think otherwise. It didnt even get close to the amount the 360 sold, so therefore floppage. Care to argue some more cow?

They did the worse out of all next gen consoles. So ummmmmm "flopped" .... a little harsh. But once again the PS3 is at the bottom of sales in the next gen race.

We are allowed fire arms but we need a license and the choice of guns is limited. Also Dingos are a protected species. Edit: Also I did realize that you were being sarcastic, but your examples sucked, really, really bad.

Pssht! I freakin' hate my country. I'm not boasting, I just tell it like it is. I don't care about hurting other peoples' feelings. Canada may be freakin' boring, but they get free healthcare. I'd live there any day.

Id rather live in a boring country then have high crime rates, dirty polluted cities and a dodgy government. Oh but you have teh Hollywood, which makes you the best.

Uh...... ok. Due to your continued attack at me, I take it you didn't understand the fact that I don't even like my own country. But, to make things fair on my end, I'll point out your on an American web site, with a sig and avatar of an American console, and are You hmost likely on an American-made computer. You probably have eaten at Burger King a decent number of times, and have enjoyed it. You most likely purchased your 360 at Target. Blah blah blah..... I could go on forever.

...Ok, so that means i should believe the country to be superior? No i dont. You may produce lots of products which i own, but its still not a good country to live.

Why are some of Americans talking trash about AUS? As far as countries go our 2 would consider eachother friends. Sorry to all from AUS. Most Americans like you guys. From being on these forums I am sure you can tell some young ones post here.

Don't worry about that guy. He is just oversensitive or something. No one really expects you or anyone else to know anything about Australia or care about it. It's a small country and if we didn't speak English I would be surprised if you knew as much as you did. I don't know much about New Zealand and they are for us what Canada is to the US. However your wrong about Burger King, we don't have that here unless it's under another name. Everything else you are right about, more or less.

How can you say it didnt get close to the numbers of 360s in australia when they can only confirm that it has surpassed the 20000 preorder amount. That can mean its sold as much as the 360 a little less then the 360 or alot more.

$25 mil. seems like a lot, but in reality it's not. It's just damage control from Sony.XGuNn3rX

Agreed. Cows are just desperate for any "good" news.

The article in the OP even confirms that the PS3 is having a worse launch than both the Wii & x360.....yet that's still great news to cows!!

[QUOTE="Chloroformality"]Do people really need to play games in Australia? I mean, they have crap like scuba diving and...... the opera..... Not to mention all those dingos that are hurtin' for a shootin'. I mean, that's like an FPS right there.

Wrong thats what you want to read, the article shows that the PS3 has outsold the 20,000 preorders it had. They dont know the exact numbers of how much it has sold but the point is it is far from damage control it is basically knowledge for all the people who jumped to conclusions when nobody wanted to spend the night for a console they already had purchased and guaranteed to be there in the morning or over the weekend.

So lets see you had 20,000 pre orders the system supposedly sold more then 20,000 so in reality what ever number over the pre-order is what the system really sold at launch. Which means lets just say is sold maybe 21,000 units if we only use non pre-orders then the system only sold for launch 1000 units. So how is this so great again, and lest we forget this is Sony saying those numbers and we all know how sony loves to sell there numbers.

[QUOTE="Bandit_Haze"]$24m AUS sounds like a lot but considering the price of the thing, its not like they had to sell a lot to thereJavy03
It outsold its 20,000 preorders it had in three days. They dont even know by how much. How can people spin this news into something bad like its not that much.

if i sold mansions for a living 24m is a bad 3 days.. if i sold pencils, 24m is a friggin awsome 3 days. if i sold ps3s, 24m is a not bad 3 days

this IS a flop

there is no denying that the ps2 was the undisputed top seller last gen by a mile

so its a flop if the ps3 has the lowest launch numbers than the other 3

And preorders dont count as launch sales why, because launch numbers for NA for the 360 and PS3 and Wii all counted preorders??

So then the PSP having the highest launch made it a success....wait no the DS is still kiling it Oh and the Wii only beating the 360s launch by 2,000 means that the 360 and Wii are close in monthly sales..........wait no the Wii is beating the PS3 and 360 by a huge margin every month The point of this thread is to point out how wrong people were for assuming that the launch was a failure because people didnt camp out the day before. It sold more then its preorders, thats a success. It also costs double the Wii and the 360 launched in a completly different time frame all alone with no competition. The PS3 is selling fine.

You again?

Just face the fact: The PS3's launch in AU was worse than both the x360 & Wii's. Your article is the proof of that. The rest of your posts are pure cow damage control.

My article shows that although launch day looked barrin the PS3 easily managed to outsell its preorders and then some. You are the one jumping to assumptions. The 360 and Wii did a little better but hardly, and the Wii is half the price and the 360 launched alone a year ago. You do know the PSP was the top launch sales champ before the 360, I guess the PSP must be slaughtering the DS in sales...huh.
