So after all this talk about the PC gaming being superior to console gaming, I decided to pick up a nice computer and two games (GTAIV, Fallout 3). I hooked it up and tried to install and play both games, but ive yet to have the oppurtunity to play either. After installing Fallout 3 I can play the game for around a minute before it decides to just crash. My computer can run it just fine, as the game reccomended I play on High settings.

GTAIV.... Is just a horrible mess to simply start playing. Im still trying to get through this process. I believe its just the whole games for windows LIVE situation thats ruining my gaming experience, and it appears im not the only one having problems with GTAIV for the PC (reading an article posted on N4G). Im not giving up on it, but as of now I really don't care how much better games look on the PC. The simplicity to pick up and play a game for the consoles is definently a benefit.

You managed to get two of the buggiest games on PC this year. Are there any other PC games you're looking into?

Thats because you got a Bethesda game (meaning its going to have loads of bugs) and a messy port. Get some Valve, Blizzard, and Crytek games perhaps. You might be having more fun then.

Me too... PC gamins is supremely overrated. I built mine a while ago with Mass Effect and Stalker, and I was more worried about my GPU and northbridge overheating than actually having fun. Didn't play anything else until Left4Dead demo. And I bought Half Life for $1 on the anniversary and i can't get passed the first cut scene without it crashing... And the majority of games on it are RTS which I don't like, and single player based FPS...And I only like MP based FPS...

Have you tried Battlefield, Counter-Strike, Team Fortress 2, Unreal Tournament, or Call of Duty? I know a couple of those are on consoles too, but the PC versions are better for the most part. At any rate, those are some pretty popular MP shooters for PC. Try them, might have some fun.

I used to play counter strike a lot back in like 2002 and I have played some of the others on consoles.. I was told about Battlefield, but when I built a powerful PC I wanted something that was going to push it, so I am sort of waiting on the next one....

I know what you mean I've been trying to get into PC gaming more but I just don't like it as much. The only genres I prefer on the PC are MMOs, RTS, and Sims. I bought both Oblivion and Call of Duty 4 for PC and I just didn't like using the keyboard. The mouse is nice for aiming in FPS but the keyboard can be aggravating cause theirs so many buttons. I actually just re bought Oblivion and CoD4 for the 360.

Its things like this that turned me off gaming on PC.

Consoles have one set of hardware, so when a game is released on that platform, they generally work like they should do.

Its just much less of a PITA

It's not for everyone, and when devs get lazy, it can be a bit of a hassle. As someone pointed out, with the exception of Stalker: CS, you managed to pick the two buggiest games of the year. :P

too bad for you ..... I ran fallout 3 on max settings flawlessly and it looked gorgeous, looked much better than possible on consoles. And after finishing it , since I wanted to just keep on exploring without level cap, I just installed the required mod(s) and am having a pretty good time Didn't tried GTA IV though

But if it doesn't work, that game never will. Or at least that build of it won't. With a PC, at least you can tweak it yourself and make it work. You get a console game that doesn't work you're stuck with it until you get a new copy. So there are pros and cons to both sides you know.

It really isn't for everyone. Try some STALER:SoC, The Witcher, Oblivion with mods (there's thousands), Warcraft 3, Crysis, TF2, maybe some Total War, and other big name PC games. It took me awhile to like PC gaming as well, but since last year was pretty poor (most of the year was mediocre FPS titles) for the consoles I managed to get into a lot of PC games rather quickly. As of now it's hard for me to go back to console games; they don't run very well and the community is absolutely horrendous. I play a lot of Gears of War 2 now though. :P

like the first reply says, you got two buggy games. make sure to turn on your gpu fans to 100 percent and see if that doesn't fix your crashing. gta4 is one of the biggest glitchy shames in recent memory. there are tons of great pc games, just choose better.

I have absolutely no idea why people seem to have problems. Perhaps you don't do enough research before building, hence the lack of compaitibility and crashes. I am running ALL my PC games with moderate 2005 tech, and I have had NO problems even running Stalker and Crysis.

i honestly prefer my X360 to my PC. The best perk of having a gaming PC is that the games are cheaper, and i don't just mean a $10.00 difference - best buy/futureshop is(was?) selling prince of persia for 29 bucks

your a beginer to pc gaming, seeing the games you bought are just pc posrts. You should try different genres for a change. I suggest starting off with popular indie and rts. Try buying pc only titles because they are made for the pc.

I'm just guessing you're using Vista, no matter how many people say it's now great and improved and all that jazz, it still seems to be that most people having problems are running Vista and not XP. I've put perhaps 30+ hours into FO3 and it's been extremely stable, got ctd once after a long session when alt+tabbing but that's about it. GTA4....well, that's just a bad port. And I don't mean to sound offensive, but if you bought a gaming rig just to play GTA4 and FO3 I'm sorry. :P Both are games designed for consoles, you could had just as well stuck to 360.

Your first mistake was buying a Games for Windows title.

NEVER BUY THAT IF YOU CAN ALSO FIND IT ON STEAM!

Second one was, as alot of people said you chose the 2 buggiest PC games ever.

I suggest you get Steam, buy The Orange Box, CS:S, Call of Duty, Far Cry 2.

Too many buttons? How is that a bad thing. Your hand stays in one place for the entire time unless you're typing, hitting sec, or have binded other keys on the other side.

Having a lot of buttons means you can customize. Don't like a key's placement? Change it. This also means you have lean function, prone, type function, and other commands console games don't have.

Since when do console FPS not have prone and/or lean functions? I've seen both in console shooters. Consider CoD4, where a quick tap crouches and a slightly longer hold goes prone. Just because it's not implemented the way it is on a PC doesn't mean a console can't do it.

Yes but they're not in all Console FPSes while in almost all PC fpses, they are implemented.

COD4 console version may have prone but it doesn't have lean.

get some good games, then bugg games. here r some good games, crysis, counter strike source, garry's mod (if u like building things with half life stuff) half life series, battlefield 2, FEAR, oblvion, these r some of the good PC games that i have/ played. crysis has a demo so u can tell what and how the game is going to be.

if u said that u can play it but it crashes i think it might be that ur computer might be overheating.

Step 1: Download Steam

Step 2: Buy The Orange Box

Step 3: Buy Crysis (and Warhead if desired)

Step 4: Buy Titan Quest and expansion

Step 5: Buy Medieval 2: Total War

Step 6: Enjoy thousands of hours of enjoyment

Might even want to give an MMO a try, they have free trials for all of them.

xI highly recomend trying all the genres pc gaming has to offer. Also try some of the older games too, some genres are hard to find like for exmaple ocean fantasy ones that have seemed to have died.

Two games and you are already passing judgement? Wow... that's pretty sad.

You have a couple decades of PC games to go through, that should take a couple years.

Yeah. Gears, while not a FPS (though it plays a lot like one), implements leaning via a cover system. Think about it: what do you use leaning for? To look around something (or even fire around it) without exposing yourself. That's exactly what cover systems do. Look at Killzone 2's implementation, for instance - you barely peek an eye around the wall when you're in cover, until you lean out to fire. All the while, your viewpoint is filled with whatever you're hiding behind until you lean out (as it would be with a lean key in an FPS, as opposed to a 3rd person camera).

To put it another way - what does a lean key allow you to do that a cover system does not? Hide behind something? Check. Look out from behind it? Check. Fire from behind it without fully exposing yourself? Check. It's simply a different way of achieving the same goal. Leaning isn't implemented via separate keys on consoles, because a better way of handling the same task is already common.

[QUOTE="lowe0"]Yeah.

How many FPSes have cover systems like KZ2? (This is a sincere question)

Exactly alike, as in refuses to break 1st-person even for a second? None. First-person with snap-to-3rd on cover is a lot more common (see Rainbow Six Vegas), or 3rd-person with snap-to-1st on aiming from cover (see Metal Gear Solid 4).

My point is, leaning is already a solved problem. Console FPS don't need lean buttons because a better solution already exists. Prone - now that's something that needs to be standardized, but again, a perfectly good solution is already well-known. If console developers aren't putting these things in their shooters, it's not because no one knows how to make it work on the limited buttons of a gamepad - it's because they're choosing not to have them in their game.

Fallout 3 runs like a charm for me. The game I have issues with is Crysis Warhead. Man that game is a pain. Crashes, BSOD's, everything bad that could happen, happens.

If its not running correctly, more often than not its your own fault; letting crapware infest your computer, or messing things up results in it.

GTA IV is an exeption, its a horrible port.

Honestly I think things should be implemented if the design warrant's it. Put in prone, and the games pace can take a dramatic change, as players will be encouraged to play more defensively.

Its really a matter of it working. Honestly I think the trend in rechargeable health is a massive skid-mark on gaming in quite a few respects, as its not implemented thoughtfully or correctly for the context, nor does it enhance the design; Its just lazy.

As for cover, a lean button - in PC shooters usually does the trick just fine. An example of a game who's combat is made far worse without a lean button is Far Cry 2, next to a game like STALKER, which also has strong focus on cover in combat.

Thats because you got a Bethesda game (meaning its going to have loads of bugs) and a messy port. Get some Valve, Blizzard, and Crytek games perhaps. You might be having more fun then.Skittles_McGee

im surprised no one said to try the 180.84 beta drivers for gta4 performance, makes the game alot more playable at some areas. Get cod:united offensive, and get in the happy penguin servers :D To be honest, most people preffer the 360 cause of its simplicity and not have to worry that down the road your gonna have to upgrade it. Well atleast thats why my friends are console gamers, but when they see my rig in action they cant hold themselfs but shove me out of my chair to play :D
