yes and no.
its shown its potential but its hardly used.
for games like FF13, or lost odyssy or GT5 its shown that its the future (or at least that 9gb is too small in the future)
and when you have a **** tech like mega texture that needs all that space yeah it can be helpful.
but it wont see its full potential to next gen with faster drives
OOnly in as far as you dont need multiple discs for some gamesEmpCom
well it also provides uncompressed audio and such

True, but not many are going to notice the difference, nor have the equipment to take advantage of it (much like 7.1 surround).
It was the dominant format during a generation where there was a *CLEAR* and very substantial graphical leap over the previous generation (previous format). Blu-Ray, in comparison, is the format carrying at best marginally better looking games, and at worst, WORSE looking games if you consider the PC. Could Blu-Ray be great for gaming? Sure. But, much as if DVD had been released on the PS1 and N64, it's currently an utter waste in this gen. The tech hasn't come far enough (slower read speeds? Please - that's IMPORTANT for console gaming, and the last thing you need is an expensive format that takes a step back in an important area). Blu-Ray is essentially what would have happened to DVD if it had been released for the N64 and PS1 - it would have been a wasted tech that needed a few more years before it would be even close to worth it. Next gen is the time for the next format, not this one. What did the DVD format do to prove its worth to gaming??

[QUOTE="Shafftehr"]The best looking game on the market, Crysis, says no.BlackTragedy
does crysis not have to install ?
Ironic that a PS3 gamer is holding this as some sort of trump point against Crysis, since the PS3 is the console that introduced mandatory console installs  Face it, Blu-Ray isn't even host to the best looking game on the market. That immediately puts any "ZOMG ITS NEEDED FOR THE BESTUST GRAPHICS" arguments to rest. Next?nope, maybe with the ps4. ps3 cant really handle what devs should be able to do with all the blu ray disc space.
[QUOTE="ActicEdge"]
What has blu ray done for gaming?
lundy86_4
Nothing other than increased space, and that is offset by slow read speeds.
Hopefully, newer drives in the PS4/720 (if they use it) will rectify it.
Yeah, hopefully. Other than that, Blu-Ray hasn't even done any spectacular for gaming. Not to mention that there's about only 1 game that had uncompressed sound, & that was MGS4. If it wasn't for that, then the 360 can very easily handle that game & make it in real HD.
Blu-Ray really wasn't needed for this gen, to be honest, as most titles including downloads (PSN downloads even) can easily fit on a DVD-9 disc.
That was definately a large factor, they really wanted to push Blu-Ray.
lundy86_4
They did indeed, & even though they won the format war over HD-DVD, it costed them most of their PS2 fanbase to Wii & X-Box 360. Plus I remember some dumb people saying that PS3 games will be in Native 1080p thanks to Blu-Ray, just because they thought that it worked for movies. They were certainly wrong about that, though.

Why would you want to hold out on better technology? How has it effected the way we use a medium?...it's exactly the same but 10 times better. It has only made one console more expensive than the rest for a short period of time..This has now made Bluray a well known medium that pretty much everyone, i know, wants to use. Blu ray is the future. Just like Sony did with the CD and the DVD for gaming, blu ray can only do better. Why are you hating it? It's stupid the way you don't want something better now, you want it later.
If DVD was released for the PS1, wouldn't it have been a lot easier on developers that had games that had more than one disc? Final Fantasy, Gran turismo 2..Dude, come on.
Slower read times? It's pretty fine at the moment. The only way it could be better is if there's NO load times..

Haha, that's pretty damn funny. It makes perfect sense, 1080p movies has to mean 1080p games :P
I dont know Blu-Ray since its incepetion into the market place was a mistake the movies they came out wit were using MPEG-2 instead of the new codec they use for their movies (check out the earlier releases on blu-ray to see the difference between those before and those now) and as others have said the read speeds on those drives suck badly (really sony 1-2x blu-ray drives for games over 12-24x read speeds on standard dvd good choice) the games that have showed they needed the space was metal gear solid 4 and...... yeah when another game that actually uses all the space for a game for good reason let me know cause a 7 min initial install before i can play as snake was a big no-no and then every chapter i gotta wait another 3 mins. for the chapter to install with loading screens was a slap in the face
As if if HDDVD took off, lemmings wouldn't be claiming it was necessary for gaming.
Clearly its beneficial, but not necessary. It has a lot of great features and it's better than DVD. But it's not a necessity.

what the hell does that have to do with anything? farcry 2 only takes up 4.5 gb on my 360 HDD,risen 1.1 gb, fear 2 4.5gb and even borderlands only takes up 3.3 gb , meaning that compression has got so good you can fit way more data on a dvd 9 than you could a year ago. blu-ray is anice little add-no, but it isn't necessary for gaming this genI think it has shown more of it's worth for movies than anything else.
Edit: and before you all attack me, this was not a jab at MGS4.
well

I don't see any games that could only be done on PS3 so no I do not think it has shown it's worth. I think it has potential but it is not needed yet.

when did he say that the tech should have been holded out? The question was: Has blu-ray proved it's worth yet? And his answer was a simple "no"why would lemmings do that? the HD-DVD add on for the 360 was for movies, not for games, MS are not going to switch which format they use for games years in to the generation, it wouldn't make any sense, the new blu-ray add on announced by MS is for watching movies not playing games, lolAs if if HDDVD took off, lemmings wouldn't be claiming it was necessary for gaming.

blu-ray does not make the graphics better, the graphics are limited by the RAM, not the disk size, and most of the space on the blu-ray for MGS 4 was used up for lossless 7.1 audio, which i admit is good if you own a HD Tv that supports it.Snake and Drake say Hi:D

MGS4 and Uncharted 2 say "yes."Jared2720the game that has made you install around 15gb to your hdd oh yeah, really need blu ray. would have been the same on dvd with those installs.
No.
The most powerful system has no games being released on blu-ray, so it's obviously not a requirement for anything.treedoor
I wouldn't say it's a requirement either, but it definitely helps.
And.......what's the story behind Luigi there, why's he smellin' his finger????:P
the thing is a blu ray drive is painfully slow compared to the hdd and costs close to as much as a 2tb hdd. the 1.5tb drives are cheap compared to blu ray. Then you look at speed around 100mb/s vs 20mb/s and br is just plain terrible. the future is with what pc games have been doing for years, installing part or whole game the the hdd so the media they come on becomes unimportant.yes and no.
