So.. how long before the 3DS is discontinued?

So we've seen this all before with the dreamcast; Overpriced console with no killer apps coming just before the next Sony product, and inevitably becoming discontinued. But tbf the 3DS probably has more problems than the dreamcast, with Smartphones and it's horrible resolution (seriously.. it'l like i'm wearing a fishnet over my eyes when i play it) and the insane power gap.

I can't see it being more than 18 months, what bout you guys?

where is the option "7years+" ? cause thats how many years the 3ds will stay out

The reason why the Dreamcast failed was that people didn't know that it existed (Sega did a poor job on the marketing). Nintendo (and Sony & Microsoft) don't have that problem, hence: They will never fail to sell a product, unless it's a really bad product (Virtual Boy, PSP Go, Zune etc). The 3DS is NOT a bad product.

It sold almost 4 millions in one month. At this point, I fail to see a reason to think it will be discontinued any time soon.IronBass

In a year, Nintendo will probably have a revised version of the hardware that corrects issues with the initial release, like with the original DS. The 3DS hardware lineup won't be dead for a long time. It's a Nintendo handheld, after all.

it was 200 bucks and was online from the get go, with hardware equal in power to the PS2...which happen to cost an extra 100 bucks and came over a year later.

How about Soul Calibur for a killer app? Rayman 2? Chu Chu Rocket? Sonic Adventure? Ready to Rumble? NKL 2K? these were all launch...

I love how haters are acting like 3DS is doomed just because of stock in their shops. They haven't met their targets in Europe and US but that doesn't mean its doing bad.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it actually helped Nintendo out. IIRC they said it was Wii that was struggling more lately.

Even though I think Nintendo is competing with themselves (ds vs 3ds) it's not going to be discontinued. Just wait for the sales explosion when OoT is released, and this Christmas when all the kiddies get one from Santa.WithoutGraceXII

I give it eight to ten years. it's a big Nintendo handheld. It's not gonna die anytime soon.

Going by your logic the DS should have been discontinued once the PSP had been released. Well looking back on it that would have been a stupid move wouldn't it since the DS was really successful. So no I don't think it will be dropped anytime soon and it will start selling a ton once the good games start rolling in.

Im not even going to vote, It will continue to be masproduced till its successor is announced 6-7 years from now. When compairing it to the Virtural Boy, which couldnt even sell a million units in a year before it was discontinued, it has sold way more! and only in 2 months! The sales will pick up, the eshop (along with web browsing and video recording) will be launching this month, DoA: D is coming this month, next month we have OoT3D and starfox and we also have E3. I mean, it is getting so tiring seeing all this Nintendo/ 3DS hate these past 2 days. Seriously people, stop it.

NO it didnt, sold around 1.8 million... 3.6 million shipped. Look at you local store and you'll see tons of 3ds unsold

3.6 Million SOLD not Shipped but SOLD now stop spouting that shipped lie.

EDIT: What kind of messed up logic is that, just because there are 3DS units availaible suddenly means Nintendo lied about sales. It means that Nintendo shipped more than enough units to avoid shortages. If it could sell 3.6 million units and still be readily available that means that Nintendo shipped a hell of a lot of units.

Maybe the NGP won't be released? That seems like the more likely scenario of the two.

Probably next year, when the Lite version is released.

Why would it be discontinued if its performed well?

The reason why you see so many on store shelves is that Nintendo has been smarter about their supply chain. They don't want a situation where the Wii is constnatly running out of supply and that they're struggling to meet and keep up with demand.
