After reading all psn vs xbox live threads, seeing how psn fans think a service is better than other because its 'free' but I dygress. So let's all imagine you had to pay the same money for PSN as well as Xbox live, so you have to pay $60 for xbox live a year and also $60 for psn and all the features are same as now. Can someone tell me why PSN is better than xbox live if PSN was pay service too? There is no reasons in my opinion, the only reasons for psn fanboys to defend their service because it is free.

There is no other reason.

It is better because it is free. That is the only advantage it has.

It's free, it doesnt make it better, its just an advantage.

As a consumer, why would I want to pay one person for a service I can get from another for free?

What XBL people are really paying for are the bells & whistles attached to it, not so much the service of playing online.

A better comparison would be if PSN+ is required, would it still be better than XBL gold? Services alone, maybe not. Content-wise? Definitely.

In a hypothetical scenerio, Sony fans and PS3 owners would be very upset. Myself included.

PSN being free is the reason why PS3 owners have enjoyed the service since the beginning. They don't give a damn about the useless features and incentives included in XBL Gold, and PRIMARLIY the biggest advantage and draw of PSN is:

It gets the job done for Online Gaming. All for free.

Plus, most PS3 users don't care about Online Gaming, they don't game in MP too often, and it makes perfect sense for PSN to be completely free. There's NO OBLIGATION to take full advantage of a Subscription based service, in the case of XBOX Gold.

It's like: "OMG, OMG, I'm paying for Online gaming, ZOMG I have to play online every so often in order to make the best and take full advantage of my money's worth, ZOMG, ZOMG!" With Free PSN, there's really no worries. We play online, have fun, get over ourselves, and move on.

FFS, No. This is exactly what fanboys dont get, something being free doesnt make it better. Features and the overall service is what makes something better. Xbox live has much better features than PSN, also you havent answered my question.

If it cost money, I wouldn't buy it. I was fine before online for consoles. Free PSN is just an extra little perk to me. So to answer your question, take away the main reason I like it, and I wouldn't like it, no

I'd pick PSN -

  • Warhawk - love love it
  • MAG - love it
  • Killzone series - like it
  • Resistence series - dabbler
  • Uncharted series - dabbler
  • Socom series - haven't played yet , but huge Socom II gamer. I know classic mode and bombsquad are there if I need it ! I enjoyed thos aspects of the beta
  • LBP series - built my own levels and enjoy playing other peoples

Upcoming -

  • Twisted Metal - getting a Warhawk-like vibe from it
  • Starhawk - CAN'T WAIT

Live -

  • Gears series - dabbler (like Uncharted)
  • Halo series - dabbler (like Resistance)

It comes down to games ultimately. I can play with friends with mics or join clans when I'm not going solo. No cross-game or party chat isn't a deal-breaker. When I'm solo on XBOX Live , a lot of people are in groups or mute me because I try and talk about the game anyway. Shrugs.

Paying for PSN over Live would be an easy decision.PSN >>>> Live

You havent answered my question....

Your question is silly.

If you have two virtually identical grilled cheese sandwiches, but one is free and the other costs $5, the free one is better. Becasue it's free. Asking about hypotheticals in which they cost the same is pointless, because they don't cost the same. We could just as easily say "What if Live still costs $60 a year, and PSN was still free, but 360 didn't have party (cross-game) chat?"

If we want to play the free =/= better card, then why are we even having this arguement? Wouldn't a much more logical arguement be PSN vs XBL Silver and PS+ vs XBL Gold? But hey, this is System Wars. Logic died a long time ago.

Though it has little to do with the service, other than that Sony pays for both, more games on PSN have dedicated servers.

That doesn't make paying for online worth it, but it is an advantage.

Truthfully, if both cost $60/year, I wouldn't play online on either.

Pay for PSN? Hell to the goddamn, mothereffin', blippin' no. If I was forced to choose, I would first cancel that "PSN" analogy since there's PS+. I'd definitely choose PS+ since its $10 dollars less a year, get the most out of money with: good savings, price cuts/reduced pricess, cloud saves, game sharing, pre-orders, time trials, free avatars, free dynamic themes, free exclusive themes, free games/free minis, free bundles, free DLC, free expansions, exclusive beta access, weekly deals, etc. ...and did I say savings? But I'd put this as a subjective matter since it doesnt have some features as the 360 but you definitely get your moneys worth with PS+.......and for less.

So if you had to pay for PSN.

Bye bye PS3!!

Also PSN has everything XBL has apart from one or two things and PSN has cloud storage on top of it and a browser no matter how you spin it, it's still a browser and a feature.

well it's free so in my opinion, it's better lol. Let's put it this way. Many people have a ps3 and a xbox 360. If psn was pay to play along with 360, that's $120 bucks a year to play online games. just not worth it.

Yes indeed the principle does suck, but the price isn't really something to cry over. And if it is, I'm sure there are areas in ones life where they can manage to cut $5 a month.

PSN doesn't charge you to access your own internet and router which is already paid for. That's a pretty good reason.

Bit if I had to pay for PSN???

Welp, guess I wouldn't be playing any Uncharted online then.

It's more like $50 a year (and you could get it for $40 a year very easily up until last year.)

But even at $40 a year, if you've had it since launch that's over $200. For something that's not really much better than psn, and worse than pc.

Anyways Live is a better service, but the pricing is ridiculous. If psn was the same I'd go with live.

Wait are you serious? $100 to play something you already bought? Wow that's something Sony should never find out about, or MS for that matter. I would only pay an optional amount that grants more, better features but i don't want the free version to be a "Oh i wish i had PS+" kind of thing.

Go to something else that has free online.:D:P Seriously though, I wouldn't want to have to pay for an online service. XBL is good, yes indeed it is and so is PSN but is it worth paying for? NO. Neither is PSN. Why should you have to pay for something to unlock a feature on your console for a limited time that in my opinion should already be included? On XBL, I pay for things I can get for free on PSN. Is XBL better? No. Is PSN better? No. I consider them both the same. I don't think neither one is better than the other.

Obviously, a better example is PSN+ being $60 and mandatory, and in that case....I'd choose PSN+. All I really care to do is play the game I bought online....if I was forced to pay for a service, I would just choose the one that reduces prices/gives free content instead of giving me features I personally would never need or use.
