I've heard a variety of responses and decided to see if I could compile them into one thread :DShadow_opyes im bying it cause the third one was frkin awesome .
imo no. the game doesnt cater to the broad audience. i cannot see it as a system seller. not bashing the game, it could be really good but its still for really hardcore mgs fans. it proberly cause a little spike in sales because of all the hardcore mgs fans waiting for it to come out so they have a point to buy a ps3. other then that no. what made halo's generic gameplay a system seller?
nope. ubisoft showed kojima how to make a stealth game. metal gear and its ridiculous story seems dumb. hopefully they will fix the aim, the camera, and kill snake off already. it is a good game......id call it a great game. but how can it sale systems if its not even the best game in the genre on the system?prodiqy32maybe u and ur mom had problems with the camera and controls but i felt them just fine. u prob havent played mgs3 at all

didnt splinter cell come out after mgs? if thast what ur refering
I JUST made a response to this question with sources and everything. I really should use bookmarks.
The short answer is yes. Every other game's been a huge multiplatinum release. They really need to make sure they market this game properly, though and keep it inviting for newcomers.

you just answered your own question sport. The accessability, funfactor, and fanfare of Halo made it into a system seller. The average consumer, and most gamers that arent necessarily MGS fans aren't going ot care too much about how "innovative, story driven, and unbelievably great, the gameplay may be."
I think it may be fun, but it's not enough for me to run out and dump 460 bones for a PS3 and a game.Halo gives players online gaming, making it something you want to get in on on day one. With MGS I'll be able to buy it next gen if i want, when PS3 is 200 dollars.

I can also add that the controls were jacked in MGS3 as well. How do you have a stealth game in the jungle with no first person or over the shoulder view.

As for my Mother, she doesn't play videogames too often. I'd say something about your mom, but I'd rather not speak ill of the mother of my children. She must've tricked some poor sap into thinking he got her pregnant, that's why you allways get a blood test.
Of course it is. Each installment of the series sells millions, the highest being MGS2 at 7 million copies sold worldwide. It's as much a system seller as Halo, Mario, Gears of War, Final Fantasy etc etc. A lot of people here are seriously under-estimating the fanbase - it's not just a little niche market you know.

if it's a great game, and kojima fixes the controls(seriously, they're broken.), i predict the american media will hail it as some kind of undiscovered innovative game which has never been done before.

I'm simply saying that MGS3 sold less than 4 million copies - thus, a maximum of less than 4 million gamers purchased the PS2 FOR MGS3. And, obviously, not every copy of MGS3 was sold to a new PS2 owner. See what I'm getting at? MGS3 could have sold a MAXIMUM of 3.8 million PS2s out of the 120 million PS2s total. Not at all, actually. And, honestly, I have no idea how you came to that conclusion. :| On the PS2, Grand Theft Auto and Gran Turismo were the only franchises that I would consider "system sellers", considering GTA: SA and GT3 both sold almost 15 million copies. 12.6% of PS2 owners bought GTA:SA and GT3, compared to only 3% for MGS3. No single franchise can be responsible for a system "winning", but you have to sell a TON of copies to be considered a "system seller" in my book.[QUOTE="King_of_Sorrow"]Either that, or people who do some research and learn that MGS3 didn't even manage to sell 4 million copies on the PS2 (a console with 120 million users). :| What makes you think that MGS4 will "sell systems"? You're forgetting that MGS2 sold 7 million units at a time when the PS2 had *only* sold about 20-40 million units (2001 - 2003). That's a very respectable attach ratio if you ask me, and definite system seller material.

I actually was going to say that about thw 120 million thing, but more important is his defintion of a system seller. Why is it the ratio matters? Also, if you going to call a game a system seller base on ratio what is the percentage a game must have?

Well, by your logic, every exclusive that sells a single copy is a "system seller". /debateI see MGS4 as more of an "auxiliary" system-seller...
While I'm sure there's at least 1000 die-hard MGS fans that will be getting a ps3 for it...I think most people will look at MGS as a side-bonus to the more mainstream system sellers.
GTA4 will sell systems.
However, because it's multiplat, potential buyers will be looking at other games to support it.
For example, an MGS fan buying a next-gen console for GTA...would get a ps3 instead of a 360.
That's about as far as I'd go calling MGS a "system seller".

Ok - so PS2 owners were only allowed to buy MGS3 immediately after it launched? :| That makes perfect sense....oh, wait... It doesn't.You don't get it, its as simple as this.
MGS3 sold a 3 million copies when there were 110 million + PS2's in the market. Meaning that either 3 million PS2 owners that already had PS2 bought it, or a mix of new owners that bought PS2 for the game bought as well which can be encorparated into the 120+million sales figure that we have now.
MGS2 sold 7+ million when the PS2 had a smaller base, so what you can assume is that 7 million poeple out of the 30 million(?) bought PS2 for MGS2, or 7 million people bought it leading to the increase that later happened in PS2 sales.
Only way you can be sure is to check the sales charts? Are you going to do that...no. because you alrady have a pre conceived notion that MGS is not a system seller. The amount of pre-oders for MGS2 should speak for themselves, people can only play this game on PS3, so they bought PS3 to play the game.

You have misunderstood me, that's why. I am only using MGS2 as an example since it was released at an early date in the PS2's life cycle. Forget MGS3 for a minute - it's MGS2 that was the system seller, since it sold 7 million units by the time the PS2 had so far sold approx. 40 million units out of its 120 million potential. Sure, i'd agree with you in saying that it wasn't a system seller if the PS2 had sold all 120 million units by the time MGS2 had launched in 2001, but that just wasn't the case. There were only about 20-25 million PS2 units on shelves in 2001 - the sales and timing are practically akin to Halo 2, a game widely regarded as a system seller, releasing on the original Xbox in 2004.
