Thanks to all of you who posted, im going to get a PC, probably a Dell Inspiron 1525

This belongs in the computer hardware forum, though honestly they are all going to say pc, because pretty much every one here is anti-mac.and I can't decide wether to get a PC or Mac. I've never used a Mac before, but I hear good things about them. All I would be using the computer for would be internet, instant messaging, videos, music and the odd text document or something for school.
I first thought I would just get a regular Windows based PC, but have considered getting a Mac. I hear that they are alot easier to use and give the user alot less hassle. Low chances of you getting viruses or just general problems with your computer and stuff. But they are relatively expensive, and I don't really want to go and pay for something that isn't worth the money. I know most of you guys play PC games and would have PC as the obvious choice. But im not into PC gaming, and I just really want a computer that will be easy to use and give me no problems, I hear Macs are good like that. Is it true or would I just be better of saving my money and getting a Windows based computer?
Any advice would be great, thanks.

Personally I don't think they are worth the extra money. I'd rather spend that money on gaming upgrades, a huge monitor, awesome sound system or something like that. But that's just me.
You certainly don't need a Mac or an expensive PC for some IM and school projects. A reasonably priced laptop might be a good choice.
Umm....I believe the main thing he's looking for in a computer is something that will give him no problems and is easy to use. The Mac seems to fit that bill to a T. Plus, the dip**** who write malicious code tend to target PCs as they capture a large segment of the marketshare.BladesOfAthenaYou are wrong. the pc is the obvious choice because of its upgradeability and better value for money, you can get a PC that performs just as well as the equivenet MAc for about half the price.

This isn't a matter of whose right or wrong. That may be to you, but I'm talking about what's better for HIM. He wants something that's stable, which is precisely what the Mac is.

Still to expensive for what they are, if he wants something easy to use, fine then get a mac but dont expect it to be cutting edge. im talking about gaming and value for money, in that respect the 'difficulties' are vastly outweighed by thr Mac massive price tag and lack off raw power. if you maintain your PC prooperly you should have no problems, i just use AVG, spybot and Ad-aware/cc-cleaner and de-frag once a every 2 months and my PC is just perfect.[QUOTE="BladesOfAthena"]You are wrong. the pc is the obvious choice because of its upgradeability and better value for money, you can get a PC that performs just as well as the equivenet MAc for about half the price.[QUOTE="thegoldenpoo"][QUOTE="BladesOfAthena"]Umm....I believe the main thing he's looking for in a computer is something that will give him no problems and is easy to use. He just stated that he's not into PC gaming. Unless you're into PC gaming, cutting edge should be the least of one's concerns. A Mac may be expensive but its well worth the money and it won't break down as easily as a PC.
this^^Well if you want to game then i think the choice is obvious.
If you are getting a new computer why miss out on the experience....

Cuz there are arguably better alternatives when it comes to one's gaming needs, like consoles for instance.

Which is purley based on ones opinion. No console offers an experience a PC does.
Go figure.

Ha, the opinion card. That works both ways.
Does it even matter?
Thanks for your advice guys, i've narrowed it down to either a Dell Inspiron 1525 or a Macbook, still can't make a decision though, maybe i'll resurrect this thread when i've got my new computer or something...ONLYDODSeriously consider asking on the PC hardware forum, laptop wise the'll have some handy advice no doubt. Best to have an educated purchase!

so you are aruguing that the PC is worse for gaming than a console? this cannot end well for you here...anyway this thread is about buying a PC NOT A CONSLE.

i want some of what blades is smoking
i find it funny how apple only has to optimize for a few different sets of hardware and the os still has huge flaws. at least windows has to be optimized for hundreds of thousands of combinations and is still easier to use imo. the lack of a right-click just killed any thoughts i had about getting a mac. maybe get a laptop, but NEVER get a mac desktopshakmaster13
Im right clicking on my MacBook right now:?

IMO you should get this.
It's more than 200 pounds cheaper than the Mac Book but can easily match it if not beat it in performance.

You in England? If socheck Amazon, they are having a sale on Acer laptops and they have one for 450 pounds that's amazing for that price.
I'm on a macbook pro right now, my desktop is a rig i've built, and i've built probably 5-6 rigs for myself over the years. If you want to use it for business, Photography(what i do for a living), or anything of that matter, get a mac, if you want gaming, go for pc. I actually do gaming on my macbook, but Blizzard games are easy to run on any machine, so it really doesn't come into the equation that much. I honestly think you for, get a mac, you can run XP on them or Vista, your choice, and get the best of both worlds. Be sure to watch the mac site, as they will give really good price discounts when they upgrade their hardware for their machines every few months, and sell the old machines for 300-400 dollars cheaper brand new.
And for the people saying you can't upgrade macs, I guess you've never owned one.
:P
*edit* P.S. If you buy a macbook or macbook pro, don't spend the extra money to get a bigger hard drive or more Ram on the site, hit up new egg, you can save a lot of money.
cheers.
Which is purley based on ones opinion. And no PC offers the experience a Mac does. All day at work, I want to throw my XP machine off the roof because of the things I'm used to on my Mac that I can't do on a PC. No Spotlight. No Expose. No unified menu bar (a lot more important than it sounds - see Fitt's Law). And as annoying as a beachballed Mac is, my Windows machine just freezing up for 30 seconds or so here and there without telling me anything is far worse. But, I'm on a .Net team, so unless I move to a Java team, I'm stuck on Windows. No console offers an experience a PC does.

Oh I'm sorry mod...oh wait, you aren't?
If you want to keep things on-topic, you shouldn't try to pick an argument about something that has the pontential to derail the thread.

Wait, who was picking the argument again ???Cuz there are arguably better alternatives when it comes to one's gaming needs, like consoles for instance.

My Windows machine doesn't freeze up every 30 seconds, that sounds more like user error, but personally when i'm batching 8000 photos from a sports event shoot, and i don't want there a chance of it working 4 hours and on picture 7999 the program freezes up.0rbsIt's for 30 seconds, not every 30 seconds. I actually would be throwing it off the roof if that were the case. :)
Some of it is bad software (TOAD for Oracle is the worst piece of trash ever coded), but even stuff that works perfectly well on my Vista box at home (Visual Studio 2005) just goes off into la-la-lockup-land every so often.

Yes its my fault that someone decided to cherrypick a particular word from my post and focus on that.
Anywho, stick to the topic guys. My call.:D
And for the record, consoles > PCs.

I think it was perefectly obvious to you an argument was going too start when you said Consoles are better for gaming than PC, even with the 'arguably' in it.Yes its my fault that someone decided to cherrypick a particular word from my post and focus on that.

LINUX
Seriously, if you're not interesting in gaming, then get a Linux PC. It's much cheaper than a Mac.

Such a baseless statement.
Find me a PC that runs Aperture 2.1 btw.

Because Lightroom is only good for printing from? Aperture destroys lightroom.
